What is so incredible is the curated and personalized, end-to-end experience that comes with a pre-departure arrangement and information, to plan for my bespoke itinerary, evoking my senses, and a personalized guestroom experience at my suite. The hotel stay at the lovely Intercontinental Singapore, commenced with a chauffeured pickup from my starting location at Marina Bay Sands; my driver, Yao De, was on-time and came with a lovely Ipad showcasing my name, of course! He was friendly, courteous and helpful and all it took was 7 minutes to my venue. Upon arrival, I was greeted by the Head Butler Shirish (who has been taking my messages and making arrangements for me, 3 days before my arrival) along with my personal butler concierge Chia Yi, and together with her marketing colleague Zhi Yu and room division colleague Sushant, true feel of a Luxe VIP! I like that! The private butler service was a special one that just commenced recently; Shirish was earmarked from his many years of hospitality in Dubai to head the department, and he was already in contact with me 2 days before my arrival; my personal concierge Chia Yi had previous luxury butler experience so I knew that I would in good hands! I was escorted to my room where I was welcomed by Azfar, another butler and served the welcome drink, the Intercontinental Tea with Sour Plum, so refreshing with a nice cool towel, which I consumed with delight, whilst being brought around on a tour of my one-bedroom suite (69 square metres - so spacious and pretty big), awesome curated welcome amenities, wine and branded toiletries, with a wonderful plethora of a welcome greeting card, fruit basket, yummy snacks and a lovely bottle of Kressmann Merlot 2021, whilst doing my simple and personalized room check-in and briefed on my itinerary by Chia Yi for my 3 days - 2 nights hotel stay, and a welcome message as well from the General Manager, Andreas Kraemer. I noted the welcome pillow that was personally embroidered with our acronyms - nicely done - and so later, it was washed and ironed and given to me (so I can bring it home), and it was nicely presented in a tray, along with a gorgeous Peranakan-inspired name card holder, a passport holder and a lovely metallic-driven bookmark; so thoughtful the team from Intercontinental Singapore! The toiletries in the bathroom were amazing, and the scent on the bath gel, pleasant, and at turn-down, there were chocolates, a mist spray for the pillow, room and bedsheet and another eau de parfum roll-on from Maison 21G, packed in a pretty box and placed on the bed, along with a bedside mat, so thoughtful once again; Housekeeper Amy did an amazing job, by making sure that every fuss and every detail was accounted for, before handing over the room at each turn. Oooh, i love the plush bathmat outside the shower room, so fluffy, I almost wanted to buy it and bring it home! Intercontinental Singapore has 14 different room types, so my category was the one-bedroom suite; a haven of penthouse living in my luxuriously-appointed that is situated on Level 16 (highest level) of the hotel. The suite is bursting with natural daylight from floor-to-ceiling windows, and feature a plush living room, a charming bedroom. Throughout my stay, I had the convenience of easy level 1 parking status outside the main entrance of the hotel accorded to me, and when it was raining, Chia Yi came to pick me up with an umbrella, and always was on standby, attending to my every whim and fancy- truly characteristic of a luxurious top-notch butler service in every imaginable way! Enhanced Club Intercontinental Experiences The Private Butler stay comes with Club Floor Status "termed Club Intercontinental" so we had the privilege of dining at the Club level 2, for breakfast (which was a la carte by the Club menu) from 6:30am to 10:30am (so waking up late at 9:30am was perfectly alright), for tea time - from 3-5pm (with wonderful snacks, yummies, cheeses, fruits, nuts, ham and delectable pastries, puffs and scones, together with coffee, tea, juices, the full works, for evening cocktails time from 6-8pm, so lots to drinks from beer, wines, bubby, spirits, cocktails, along with cheese, nut, fruits, cakes, hot and cold snack platelets - just brilliant! Butler Kamlesh, was always present here, along with the Butler team, so I guessed I have met the entire Butler team, which is omnipresent and always great! EMS Wellness Indulgence As part of the in-hotel experience, we also experienced an EMS gym training by our trainer Tim; InterPulse Fitness partnered with Intercontinental Singapore to offer an Electronic-Muscle-Stimulation (EMS) training program. Led by an international team of professional coaches and adopted by pro athletes, the training gave us a high-intensity, whole body workout using low-frequency electrical impulses to stimulate muscle groups often missed in conventional training sessions, and it was absolutely fun, and certainly a fantastic workout! Held at the gym at InterContinentalSingapore, each EMS program is only 45 minutes but is equivalent to a four-hour-long workout while being gentle on your joints. The results are increased metabolism, strength and toning, weight loss and reduced fat, muscle gain and injury recovery, and we could feel the EMS pulses on our hands, thighs, ribs, stomach and back, truly rejuvenating, and a synthesized massage-fitness session, I call it! As the name denotes, EMS emits low-frequency impulses that reaches deeper muscle groups by contracting the muscles during the workout. Origins - Background and Introduction Ninth-generation winemaker Dominique Portet chose the cool climate of aptly named Coldstream in the Yarra Valley as home to the eponymous winery he founded in 2000. It was the culmination of a tenacious search for grapegrowing terroir to rival that of his native Bordeaux – but also the start of a new chapter in a winemaking story that has its roots in France in the early 1700s, and so the origins of this awesome lovely wine brand has its humble beginnings liked to the wineyards in France. Currently his son Ben Portet – generation 10 – heads the winemaking team, firmly observing the central tenets of this young yet historic estate: respect for tradition, understanding of site and an open mind towards contemporary practices that shape wines that are ever more refined and delicious. We had the wonderful opportunity to visit, taste, tour and sample the lovely variants from the different vintages from Dominique Portet, one lovely morning in July 2023. Dominique Portet - the Man himself Dominique Portet got his first whiff of wine at one of the world’s most illustrious wine properties: Château Lafite-Rothschild. It was here in Pauillac that his father, André Portet, served as régisseur (vineyard & winery manager). Dominique went on to earn his stripes at Montpellier University of Oenology before perking up morale as wine-buying adviser during compulsory military service. He later spent vintages in the Médoc, Rhône Valley, Provence and with Champagne giant Moët et Chandon, as well as in the Napa Valley at his brother Bernard’s Clos du Val estate. "I found fragrance and structure – most of all the structure reminds me of Bordeaux. The Yarra has a charm, a beauty that engulfs you. The wines are worldly." Since 1976 he has been a pioneer of the renaissance of Australia’s cool-climate wine industry, founding renowned sparkling wine house Taltarni in the Pyrenees and Clover Hill in Tasmania. In 2000 he embarked on his greatest adventure: the Dominique Portet winery in the Yarra Valley. Understanding a brand and comprehending a vintage, requires a good review of the terroir, the terrain, the climate and environment and along with it, the winemaker's style, training and cultural charisma that governs the delivery of a particular wine style, so aside from understanding the original winemaker of Dominique, we also take a look at Ben's training and wine style origins... Ben Portet - the new generation Along with the incredible lineage and pedigree that comes with being a 10th generation winemaker, Ben has benefited from the wisdom and experiences of many. That began with four vintages at the renowned Adelaide University finishing school of Brian Croser and Con Moshos at Petaluma in the Adelaide Hills. Internationally he has worked with Philippe Blanc of Bordeaux’s Château Beychevelle, in Reims with Louis Roederer and honed his skill with Syrah in Hermitage working with M. Chapoutier. His "new world" experiences include South Africa’s Stellenbosch Warwick Estate, as well as a stint in California’s Napa Valley artisan St Helena winery Vineyard 29. Since returning to the Dominique Portet Winery in 2008, he has not only continued 40 years of pioneering family wine craftsmanship in Australia, but also been a leading industry judge, completing the Len Evans Tutorial scholarship in 2017. The Label The arabesque form that adorns the labels is designed by celebrated Greek jeweller Ilias Lalaounis. The shape suggests grace, strength, purity of line. It symbolises the close bonds between generations, families and continents. The design derives from a pair of earrings worn by Dominique’s wife, Julia, who met the Lalaounis family when she was a student. Their friendship has grown over the decades. Ilias Lalaounis is the only jeweller to be welcomed as an associate of the Académie des Beaux-Arts of the Institut de France in Paris. He has boutiques in Athens, Paris, London, Geneva, Zurich, New York, Hong Kong and Tokyo. His work has been exhibited in New York, Washington DC, Paris and at the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow. This has been a mainstay of Dominque Portet since the beginnning, and is now stronger than ever thanks to Rosé’s global success. Pale pink with ripe fruit, creamy mouthfeel and crunchy acidity - it’s everything you’d want from a Rosé. 2022 SINGLE VINEYARD CHARDONNAY It’s a rich, rounder style than we usually produce, with power, opulence and texture balanced by crisp natural acidity, adding freshness and poise. Delicious now, a couple of years in the cellar would help accentuate the experience. 2016 VENDANGES TARDIVES Grown on the cellar door site in Coldstream, this Sauvignon Blanc based dessert wine is a beautifully balanced wine with a wide spectrum of aromas and flavours. Plenty of concentrated red berry fruits and bramble, refreshing acidity and fine tannins give the wine a silky texture and a long finish. 2022 SINGLE VINEYARD CABERNET FRANC Bright pale ruby, leafy blackcurrant, earth with some oak smoke and red fruit. These combine perfectly with sour cherry, cranberry and red plum with very light tannins and fresh fruit flavours of raspberry and red apple. Structurally generous and open, the drive comes from elevated acidity integrated perfectly. 17 September 2023, Singapore – The Marina Bay Street Circuit welcomed 264,108 fans to the Formula 1 Singapore Airlines Singapore Grand Prix 2023 over the race weekend. Despite the closure of the Bay Grandstand as part of the planned redevelopment of The Float at Marina Bay, which led to this year’s reduced attendance from 2022’s record capacity, six new grandstands as well as additional walkabout tickets were introduced to mitigate the loss of capacity, and these were all fully taken up due to very strong demand. This year’s turnout exceeds the previously announced anticipated attendance for 2023 of 250,000 over the three days. In the last two days, the home of Formula 1 night racing has seen stunning action on track capped by a thrilling Qualifying session in which Carlos Sainz claimed Ferrari’s seventh Singapore pole ahead of Mercedes driver George Russell and Sainz’s teammate Charles Leclerc. Singapore now holds its collective breath in anticipation of what could possibly be a sixth different race-winner tonight. Over the last two days, the Padang stage concerts headlined by Post Malone, Kings of Leon, as well as a line-up of artistes presented by 88rising including Jackson Wang, Niki, and Rich Brian have attracted tens of thousands of fans. Ticketholders can look forward to another amazing night of performances tonight with Robbie Williams and Groove Armada at the Zone 4 Padang stage, as well as the Kings of Leon and Madness at the Zone 1 Wharf Stage. In the heart of Southeast Asia, the lion city of Singapore roared to life once again as it played host to the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix. This electrifying event brings with it an atmosphere of excitement and anticipation that the city-state is renowned for. Let’s delve into the highlights, the drama, and the experiences that defined the 2023 Formula 1 Singapore Airlines Grand Prix. The Marina Bay Street Circuit, known for its spectacular night racing, served as the backdrop for this year's event. Notably for 2023, there has been change to the design of the track. The section featuring the Floating Platform has been removed. Instead of flicking right to dive underneath the spectators at what was Turn 16, the cars will now continue straight for 380m before joining at what is now Turn 16, the old Turn 20 with the rest of the lap continuing on as normal. Thus, the new long stretch of straight road opens up many opportunities for overtaking. We witnessed many exciting overtakes happening over the weekend from the 3 different races; Formula 1, Porsche Carrera Cup Asia & Thailand Super Series. We congratulate Carlos Sainz (Ferrari) for clinching the top spot at this year's race. The race weekend has always been exciting, especially this year! Spectators saw crashes, spinouts and multiple deployments of the safety car. Lance Stroll crashed at the final turn of the circuit. This caused the first qualifying session to be red-flagged. There's never a dull moment once you pass through the gates into the circuit. Fans can be spotted keeping their eyes peeled to spot their favourite drivers. Gate 9 seems to be a favourite among fans, as many station themselves (and their cameras) in anticipation of seeing their favourite driver. Drivers tend to stay at the Ritz Carlton Singapore and the shortest route to the Paddock, would be via Gate 9. In it’s vicinity, there’s the Support Paddock where they house the cars racing for the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia and the Thailand Super Series. There were sessions when the public was allowed to head in to take a closer look at the cars. It was interesting watching the mechanics preparing the cars for the race. If you visited it post-race, it would dawn on you how much damage the car takes as it tore down the street circuit. The once shiny and pristine cars before the race, now reduced to having worn tyres, cracked bumpers and fenders. All this happening with just less than 40 minutes on track. For a better view of the track, and to take in the view of Singapore’s city skyline, we recommend for you to hop onto the Singapore Flyer. The trip inside each glass capsule takes about 30 minutes. We recommend that you take it when there is a race happening. When the capsule reaches the top, one can see the entire street circuit, and watch their favourite drivers navigate the corners and straights. Beyond the race itself, the Singapore Grand Prix offered a diverse range of entertainment options. Music concerts featuring international artists such as Jackson Wang, Post Malone, NIKI and more.. Roving acts such as stilt walkers and fire players kept guests entertained as they moved around the circuit. Singapore known for being a food paradise, didn’t disappoint with food stalls featuring both local and international cuisines, spread out at every corner of the street circuit. Between races there were many activities happening in Zone 4. In the Singapore Airlines tentage, you could find a photobooth with the pretty Singapore Airline Stewardess, driving simulators and physical reaction game machines. Nearby, there were even photo booths where you could take virtual photographs with your favourite F1 drivers! These offerings transformed the Grand Prix weekend into a huge extravaganza that catered to a wide range of tastes and interests. As seen, the Formula 1 Singapore Airlines Grand Prix has proved to be a remarkable annual event for Singapore and to the Formula 1 calendar. It showcased the dazzling beauty of night racing, the relentless pursuit of victory by the world's top drivers, and the vibrant culture of Singapore. MODERN AUSTRALIAN MAKERS CREATING THE WORLD’S MOST DELICIOUS AND AWARDED RANGE OF CRAFT GINS. THE ORIGIN It all started back in 2013 with three mates and one extraordinary copper still. Six years later, in 2019, Four Pillars Gin was named the world’s leading gin producer by the IWSC in London. They won again in 2020, making Australia’s favourite gin officially the world’s best. In 2022 they became Australia’s first certified carbon neutral gin distillery, and later in the year their sustainability efforts were recognised on a global scale with the IWSC awarding them the inaugural Green Spirits Initiative trophy. Four Pillars Gin make their famous gin in Australia; the most delicious, diverse and creative place on earth. And that’s why they get to combine intense creativity around gin with a huge passion for hospitality and gin-fuelled fun. We visited the place at the end of the road leading from the main drag from the Healesville quaint town, on Lilydale Road, and saw tourists, both domestic and international, awaiting to sample and to tour this renowned gin entity. THE VISIT AND GIN TASTING TOUR We sampled and tasted the original Four Pillars Gin; truly a classic but delicious gin with great citrus, lemon-driven and spicey; feeling the gap with a mouthful of whole, fresh oranges is what is being used in this gin which is marvelous and Australian citrus is highly aromatic, which is what we like and it truly lends to the structure of spicier botanicals like cardamom, cinnamon and star anise to the overall flavour and tone; we were told that the Tasmanian pepperberry leaf is being added to give it a feeling of warmth and the lemon myrtle added dimensions of complexity to the overall taste. The Bloody Shiraz Gin, we next sampled, had notes of juniper, raspberries, and heady spices. It was spice-driven, characteristics and hints of berries started to flow through, along with a bitter and minty expression of rosemary and beetroot. So when Gin was first combined with Yarra Valley grapes, the outcome was brilliant, and the crazy experiment using their original Rare Dry Gin steeped with local cool climate Shiraz grapes has become a cult-favourite, the perfect balance of sweet fruit and ginny goodness. They took this to another level by combining it and bottling it in a limited-edition design by Australian artist, Luke Lucas, so the enjoyment lasts.. one that you can treasure and re-use long after the purple gin is gone.... so from its dark purple colour to its natural grape sweetness, it’s the perfect balance of citrus, spice, sweet fruit and ginny goodness; just simply brilliant! DISTILLING PROCESS The process of making great gin is an art, to maximise both purity of spirit and concentration of flavour. To begin, they get their base grain spirit from Bomaderry on the south coast of New South Wales in Australia, which sources wheat from around 6,000 farmers across the state. Wheat creates an incredibly clean spirit and Australia has a global reputation for high-quality produce and production. The grain spirit is diluted to around 30% ABV and 450 litres are pumped into the belly of the still known as the ‘pot’. They then add their dry botanicals directly into the pot with the base spirit, around ten different dry seeds, leaves and roots. THE BOTANICALS Four Pillars use an entire plethora of botanicals sourced from cities and regions all across the globe, and that sets them apart from the competition; they do it better. A Must-Visit in the Yarra Wine Valley Region Healesville Sanctuary is part of Zoos Victoria. A not-for-profit, zoo-based conservation organisation dedicated to fighting wildlife extinction. Zoos Victoria is made up of four unique properties Melbourne Zoo, Werribee Open Range Zoo, Healesville Sanctuary and Kyabram Fauna Park, as well as a wildlife conservation team that works outside our zoo walls. Their zoo inspire animal lovers of all ages. And by strengthening the connection between people and wildlife, they hope to protect the future of animals and their homes. Their important work includes breeding and recovery programs and they have built partnerships with local communities, fellow conservationists, and like-minded organisations in Australia and around the globe. The Rosette Media team made a visit to Healsville Sanctuary when we visited Yarra Valley and were truly amazed by what we saw, encountered and discovered, as we toured the facility. Zoos Victoria is committed to fighting the extinction of 27 local threatened species, many of which can been seen at Healesville Sanctuary. This is absolutely one of the highlights of the trip, and going beyond seeing the animals, but understanding how they are being cared for and looked after, and how the community can play a part in their lives! A highlight of a visit to Healesville Sanctuary is the Spirits of the Sky bird presentation. It is a fantastic way to be educated on a variety of native birds while appreciating their natural beauty. They also have a large wildlife hospital known as the Australian Wildlife Health Centre. Unfortunately, the hospital is not currently accessible as it undergoes renovations. However, future visitors will have the opportunity to see what is going on within the hospital via internal glass walls. The specialist veterinary team takes care of the animals that live at the Sanctuary and treat approximately 2,000 wildlife patients that are brought in for care each year. Zoos Victoria acknowledges and respects the Traditional Owners as the original custodians of the land and waters, their ability to care for Country, and deep spiritual connection to it. They honour Elders past and present whose knowledge and wisdom has ensured the continuation of culture and traditional practices.
