- Cafe Diglas - Vienna
The Cafe Diglas at Wollzeile is a Viennese institution itself - commenced around year 1875 - a true culinary passed down through the generations, and a coffee house and restaurant juxtaposed to form as a popular destination that both locals and tourists will visit - steeped in history and culinary tradition with a touch of surprising flair and contemporary distinctive art. This historic Café keeps in full the traditional Austrian flavors and we hear the history of the Diglas family goes back to the time of their great great grandfather of the president owners was serving -in the family’s restaurants- the great Emperor Francis Joseph himself! The family name now graces four locations around Vienna with the oldest cafe-restaurant sitting on at the Wollzeile intersection; we can see the place adorned with old clocks on the end walls which are actually digital projections; and the window lamps have cute ballerina skirt lampshades which sit a=top each dining table and looks out to the street; kitchen utensils hang with chandeliers and a depiction of black and white photos reveal a collection of cool contemporary studio art. This long-established venue is open for breakfast, cakes & a daily-changing menu, with live piano in the evenings. One lunchtime, we explored and savored Vienna's culinary charm with lunch at Café Diglas where we ndulged in simple but yet delightful Austrian dishes in a cozy setting, a taste of tradition in every bite truly, it was packed with tourists and locals... We had a berry-based fritzy soft drink almost like the Almdudler, which is an Austrian soft drink with a flavour that is based on mountain herbs... and we had the Hungarian Goulash Soup - one of the best that I have tasted within Austria and in Vienna. The place was packed so I had to await for my seat, and the lady Erika quickly beckoned me to my corner seat next to those ballerina lamp shades, that has been specially reserved for me... haha, they knew I was coming.. For the main dish, I had to try the Original Wiener Schnitzel (fried escalope of vest) / potato-salad, so it was super tasty and my first schnitzel in Austria - super tasty! - schnitzels are super big in Austria, so obviously I cannot finish it, but it was so delicious - and for dessert, I chose the Diglas special style ice-cofee that comprise fresh cofee along with 2 scoops of Vanilla-icecream and whipped cream, what a delight, what a brilliant lunch meal! - Spanish Riding School - Vienna
Experience the high school of classical horsemanship in perfect harmony. Living tradition, the values of the past blending with the passion of the present Rosette Media Rating - Tourist Attraction 9.5/10 We have accorded a very high rating for this unique world-class UNESCO attraction - to see such beautiful horses being trained is truly a cultural legacy The Spanish Riding School in Vienna is the only institution in the world which has practiced for more than 450 years and continues to cultivate classical equitation in the Renaissance tradition of the Haute Ecole – which can also be found on UNESCO’s list of intangible cultural heritage of humanity. The world-famous performances by the Lipizzans – the Ballet of the White Stallions – take place in the unique, baroque Winter Riding School at Hofburg Palace, built under Charles VI. Since 1920, the stud located in the West Styrian village of Piber has been home to the famous Lipizzaners. As the only stud in Austria, Piber’s role is to breed Lipizzaner stallions which will later demonstrate their skills in the world-famous Spanish Riding School in Vienna. These performances are the result of years of training for the rider and their Lipizzans. From the young, boisterous stallions to the fully trained School Stallions, they enchant the audience with their performance in the School Quadrille, in the Schools on and above the ground and on the Long Rein. This atmosphere and the accompanying classical Viennese music make the wonderful presentation by the rider and their Lipizzans even more enjoyable. We went to site at Michaelerplatz 1 and it was so amazing~ truly full of tourists who have come all around the world to see these gorgeous horses! The Heldenberg in Lower Austria is the third site of the Spanish Riding School. On the one hand the stallions are trained and continually exercised at this location. On the other hand they spend their well-earned summer holiday as well as two to three additional six weeks breaks there enjoying a horse-friendly life. Moreover, in Heldenberg, third parties are given the opportunity to improve their horsemanship through various courses. The Training The Training offers you an insight into the exercises of the riders with their Lipizzaners. You will see both the exercise of the often still grey young stallions and the fully trained school stallions - our "white stars" - in the imperial setting of the baroque Winter Riding School, accompanied by classical Viennese music. The Training of the horses includes relaxation exercises, the refinement and perfection of lections, as well as the targeted strengthening of muscles. To keep the horses motivated the famous Schools above ground, which are presented during the performances, can be seen only sometimes at the Training. Each stallion group is exercised according to its different training level up to High School lections. A Guided Tour - Take a look behind the scenes of the Spanish Riding School in an exlusive tour of the Spanish Riding School you will visit the unique baroque Winter Riding School, the Summer Riding School with one of the world’s largest oval horse walkers and the stables of the Lipizzan stallions, which have been housed in the Stallburg (one ofVienna’s most prominent Renaissance building) for more than 450 years. You will see the various locations that make up the special charm of our historic institution and you will learn about our history, equestrian traditions and about our stars – the Lipizzan stallions! The Education of the Stallions Remontenschule, Campagneschule and High School - From Paddock to Capriole The training of the stallions starts at the age of about four years. The young horses move from the Lipizzan stud Piber to the training center Heldenberg where they do their first steps under the saddle. The training takes place according to the teachings of classical equitation to the directives of Excellency Holbein and Chief Rider Franz Meixner. The primary objective of this training is not fundamentally different from any other horse training and can be outlined with the goals of suppleness, obedience, permeability and tranquility. The task of the classical horsemanship is to study the natural movement predisposition of the horse and to cultivate through systematic training in the highest possible elegance of the high school. In training people and horses are at eye level at all times and the horse determines when it is ready to learn the next lesson. The result of this approach is an incomparable harmony between rider and stallion, as it is only achieved today in the Spanish Riding School in Vienna. Lipizzaner horses are particularly suited for this task: they are frugal, strong and particularly talented for classical equitation and have an extraordinarily good memory - all qualities that the rider must know and use for the common work. The Spanish Riding School and its Lipizzan Stud Piber, birth place and home of the world famous white stars, are honored by the UNESCO for a second time: The knowledge concerning the breeding of Lipizzan horses has been added to the UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity on December 1st, 2022. - Dinner at the Kunsthistorisches Museum
The Kunsthistorisches Museum, located in Vienna, Austria, is one of the most renowned art museums in the world. Housed in its festive palatial building on the Vienna Ring Road, it is crowned with an octagonal dome. History and Architecture The Kunsthistorisches Museum, often referred to as the Museum of Art History, was opened in 1891. It was commissioned by Emperor Franz Joseph I to house the extensive art collections of the Habsburg family, and it was opened at the same time as the Natural History Museum, Vienna which has a similar design and is directly across Maria-Theresien-Platz. The two buildings were constructed between 1871 and 1891 according to plans by Gottfried Semper and Baron Karl von Hasenauer, and later completed by Carl Hasenauer. The emperor commissioned the two Ringstraße museums to create a suitable home for the Habsburgs' formidable art collection and to make it accessible to the general public. The buildings are rectangular, with symmetrical Renaissance Revival façades of sandstone lined with large arched windows on the main levels and topped with an octagonal dome 60 metres (200 ft) high. The interiors of the museums are lavishly decorated with marble, stucco ornamentation, gold-leaf, and murals. Collections The museum boasts an impressive collection of European art spanning from the Middle Ages to the modern era. The Picture Gallery is home to works by great masters from Dürer to Raphael, Titan and Tintoretto, Rubens and Velázquez, to Rembrandt and Vermeer. The Egyptian and Near Eastern Collection, as well as the Coin Cabinet, are also part of the museum's holdings. Of particular interest is the world’s largest collection of works by Pieter Bruegel the Elder, which includes such famous paintings as The Tower of Babel, Peasant Wedding, and Hunters in the Snow. It also houses the Best of Bruegel – the world's largest collection in Vienna - 12 masterpieces united. Exhibits The museum is divided into various departments, including the Picture Gallery, the Egyptian and Near Eastern Collection, the Kunstkammer (Chamber of Art and Wonders), and the Coin Cabinet. Each department showcases a specific aspect of art and culture, providing visitors with a comprehensive view of different artistic periods and regions. Dinner at the Museum Dinner at the Kunsthistorisches Museum was an amazing experience for me, offering the opportunity to enjoy a unique and elevated dining experience in its magnificent setting or otherwise known as the Cupola Hall Restaurant; the grandeur, the magnificence, the music, the background, the ambience, the style, truly overwhelms and when that is juxtaposed with a classique fine dining experience, it is simply magical! The Cupola Hall itself is a grand space with a dome ceiling, intricate architecture, and opulent decor. - Clementine im Glashaus with Wine Cellar Tour at Palais Coburg - Vienna, Austria
We were invited for a lovely lunch at Palais Coburg & Wine Cellar Tour afterwards, and the meal over lunch was done at a glasshouse setting, aptly named Clementine Im Glashaus so I had the opportunity to savor a lovely a-la-carte gourmet lunch and exquisite cuisine at Palais Coburg; after my delightful culinary experience. I was transported on a wonderful guided sommelier-led guided tour to 5 different locations with a historic wine cellar in the Palais Coburg along with a splendid wine tasting with 5 different wines of varying character, style, terroir and finesse. Clementine im Glashaus Clementine Im Glashaus is named after Clementine of Orleans. The daughter of the King of France an d her husband, prince August of Saxe-Coburg, were the first inhabitants of the Palais Coburg in Vienna from 1849. Her painting is located in the middle of the restaurant and we took a lovely shot of it when we arrived at this venue. Interestingly enough, Palais Coburg is also the venue of a dinner venue, the Silvio-nickol, which is a 2-star Michelin restaurant (which means I have to come back again).. I was amazed at the location of this restaurant which resides in the gorgeous and stunning Palais Coburg, a truly fine dining venue that offers an immaculate culinary encounter for locals and tourists to Vienna. On the menu, I can find a sweet blend of Austrian and international Western dishes, prepared with superior native ingredients and innovative cooking methods that celebrate Austrian finesse along with nostalgic storytelling by a past wonderful era. What captures me is the Glasshouse interior, a grandiose dining room, making it magnificent, elegant yet simply romantic, so a great occasion for a get-together, business lunch or a romantic getaway.. fine dining for two. Truly a wonderful place, super atmosphere and ambience, top quality, inherent homely hospitality and just lovely food that sensationalise the palate. Clementine im Glashaus is open for breakfast, lunch, the afternoon snack and dinner - In an innovative culinary style, traditional meals are creatively re-imagined for a culinary adventure and a true tasting pleasure. The Executive Chef: Fabian Philler and the Manager: Wallner Hermann For aperitifs, I sampled the "my sweet clementine" which is a signature drink (non alcoholic) consisting of clementine, ginger ale and lime, so refreshing and a nice commencement after my airport arrival into Vienna. For starters, I was given the dish of a Prawn prepration which comprise of grilled wild red shrimp with braised sweet potato, glazed blood orange, spinach leaves & fluffy créme Fraîche, simply delightful and one of the best starters I have tasted these past years, well done to the Chef! Duck breast was my choice of my main dish, so a nicely pink roasted breast of Barbarie duck was presented with carrot cream, marinated carrots, glazed black cabbage, roasted marcona almonds & amaretto-lime-coconut cream, the presentation, structure and umami was nicely displayed in a remarkable taste format, and a delight. I has the almond_bisquit which was part of the weekly menu for dessert as it was recommended and it taste heavenly - the almond biscuit, was nicely presented with vanilla cream, banana sorbet & coffee, a superb finish to my awesome meal. I would like to give special thks to my serveur, Sebastien Eckart for recommending the lovely dishes on the menu and giving me a top-notch lunch experience. Palais Coburg - Wine Cellar & Tasting Experience The Palais Coburg Wine Archive encompasses a total of six wine cellars, each with unique characteristics, a special focus and an ideal climate for great, rare wines. The six cellars hold some 60,000 bottles from four centuries and offer an impressive combination of medieval architecture and atmospheric spaces for wine tastings and culinary presentations involving sophisticated wines. The magnificent Wine Cellar in Palais Coburg was constructed inside historical ruins from the 16th century. Each of these six different rooms (or cellars), have its' own unique character and specific dedication, and we were taken on a tour of these unique room locations. They comprise of France Cellar, New World Cellar, Old World Cellar, Champagne Cellar (my eyes were gleaming!), Rare Wines Cellar and Yquem Cellar - they are one of the best vintage, precious and rare wine collections not just in Austria but in the world and they have garnered numerous awards. Wolfgang Kneidinger, my personal guide is one of the top sommeliers in Vienna, and in Austria and also in Europe so I was very fortunate when he took me on a tour, as my pal in Weinrieder wineyards (who specialise in Ice Wine) Bernhard, told me about him, when we met up, so it a true testament to his ability and competency as a certified sommelier and viticulturist. 60,000 bottles are stored here in a 755 square-meter expanse area and . - Guided Vienna Tour - Districts 1 & 4
Today is the day I get to explore Vienna's charm in the 1st and 4th districts on a nice little city tour; a perfect blend of history and culture with my certified and experienced tour guide Mrs. Ilse Heigerth from Austria. We started the tour from Hotel Amauris Vienna, and proceeded to walk along the Music Concert Hall a venue termed the Vienna Music Society, or Musikverein Wien, a renowned classical music venue with a packed program including local & international performers, and then to Wien Museum Karlsplatz, a quaint Museum with exhibits on city's history from Roman times to the present, plus art by Klimt & Schiele. We next saw St. Charles's Church, which is otherwise known as the Karlskirche, an extraordinary 18th-century Habsburg domed cathedral with a 32.5-meter platform for views of the ornate frescoes. We next walked past the Vienna University of Technology (Technische Universität Wien) a University with a grand 19th-century main building, known for its science & engineering programs, where Vivaldi was buried... we then traversed into the environs of Naschmarkt, which is a local flea market with a bevy of antiques, artwork, household goods, used books and records along with restaurants, cafes, groceries and market. Next on the journey was the Secession Building with a lovely golden dome (full of domes in Vienna yah!), an exhibition hall that features the Beethoven Frieze by Gustav Klimt and nouveau artists. Vienna State Opera was the next pit-stop, aka as the Wiener Staatsoper, absolutely marvellous and since it was Ball Season in Vienna, there are famous Vienna Ball sessions almost every night here, during end-January 2024. It truly is a world-famous opera house offering major productions, original decor & multilingual guided tours. The route brought us to the Albertina museum, a 19th-century Habsburg palace with staterooms & collections of old master prints & 20th-century art, with a whole collection of Monet, Picasso and many artists (a separate post on this will be showcased) At this juncture, Ilse showed me a nice traditional cafe which she liked, called the Cafe Tirolerhof, which I actually visited as well, to assess the quality and standard within a Viennese traditional cafe setting, complete with elderly and family types from Vienna and of course, tourists (but not too many of them) and it was at the junction that I chanced upon Joseph Brot, which is a well-designed modern trendy and happening" cafe chain complete with cakes, pastries and bread, jam, all sorts, and a hidden secret that only the Viennese know... so I like this sort of "chance-upon" opportunities.. Imperial Crypt otherwise known as the Kapuzinergruft, which sits along Neuer Markt, is a dynamic Crypt structure beneath the Capuchin Church housing tombs of Hapsburg royalty, including emperors & empresses. Cafe Frauenbuber, one of the oldest Viennese Cafe appeared next on our route coverage, and also we passed by Mozart's last demise location and also Mythos Mozart (a special post will feature this attraction). Krapfens are huge culinary delights in Vienna, and there are multiple places that offer this like Cafe Demel, which is a graceful 1786 salon that serves specialties such as cream cakes, scones & strudels, with a cool shady terrace. Featured here is the Butterkrapfen - there are many types of krapfens, all over Vienna, and they are SO Yummy! We walked along the Kohlmarkt - the most prestigious shopping zone in downtown Vienna – also called the “Golden U” – which stretches from Hofburg Palace and Kohlmarkt via Graben to Kärntner Strasse. Formerly the location of numerous court-appointed jewelers, international luxury brands such as Cartier, Chopard, Tiffany (nice), Bulgari and Wellendorff are some of the high caliber brands we can find here, along with a high density of jewelers, upscale stores and branches of international fashion labels. St. Stephen's Cathedral or Domkirche St. Stephan is the tallest church and most iconic attraction that is a Medieval Roman Catholic place of worship with an ornate spire, catacombs & a treasury museum, with the North and South Tower. We went up the North Tower and captured a spectacular view of the entire city, along with some wineries in the distant hills, which apparently is a superb place to chill in summer. St. Stephen's Cathedral is the symbol of Vienna and also the very center of the city. At 136 meters in height, it is the tallest church in Austria. The tallest of its four towers is the south tower at 136 meters. The tower room, from which there is a gigantic view across Vienna, is reached via 343 steps. A total of 13 bells hang here. However, the best known of them, the Pummerin hangs in the 68 meter-tall north tower. It is the second-biggest free-swinging chimed church bell in Europe. On the roof of St. Stephen's Cathedral, colorful roof tiles were laid to create the Royal and Imperial double-headed eagle and the coat of arms of the city of Vienna. We walked along the Graben, that is one of the most famous squares in Vienna's first district, the city center. It begins at Stock-im-Eisen-Platz next to the Palais Equitable, and ends at the junction of Kohlmarkt and Tuchlauben and also sighted the iconic Trinity column, the Pestsäule, which is a highly important monument along this stretch of the pathway. Situated in the Graben in Vienna, it was built as a result of Emperor Leopold I's vow in 1679 to erect such a memorial in honour of the Holy Trinity in order to hasten the end of the plague. The grandest building of them all, Hofburg Palace was next and this Habsburg palace complex is superb, magnificent and truly iconic adorned with ornate, baroque interiors, imperial apartments & a silver museum. The Hofburg is the former principal imperial palace of the Habsburg dynasty in Austria. Located in the centre of Vienna, it was built in the 13th century and expanded several times afterwards. It also served as the Imperial winter residence, as Schönbrunn Palace was the summer residence. Since 1946, it is the official residence and workplace of the president of Austria. It is also known as the The Imperial Palace and has been the heart of power in Vienna since 1279. Visitors can catch a glimpse of Hofburg Palace’s Imperial past and aristocratic life; the illustrious quarters; the richly decorated Imperial apartments, the Sisi Museum, and the lavish silver collections Founded in 2004, the Sisi Museum is dedicated to the enigmatic Empress Elisabeth. The wife of Emperor Franz Joseph, Elisabeth (called Sisi), was an unconventional and spirited woman who never quite fit into the courtly society in the capital. During her life, she was the object of fascination, rumour, and admiration, and after her tragic death by assassination in 1898, the myth of Sisi only grew. Featuring over 300 hundred objects, this museum gives guests an insight into her eventful life and death while dismantling the myth in order to reveal the woman underneath. We also passed by the Imperial Apartments and the Spanish Riding School (a dedicated post on this lovely attraction and the training of the Lipizzaner horses will be shared). We proceeded to traverse the mighty grounds of the Heldenplatz, complete with its definite posture of public square & gardens which stood right in front of the old imperial Hofburg Palace, with imposing statues all over. Many significant events and activities take place at this location, even to present day. We then traversed the Volksgarten, which is huge park in the City of Vienna, and Strauss & Lanner once played in this manicured public park with temples, fountains & rose gardens. We then saw the Austrian Parliament - Parlament Österreich, which conduct guided tours of the lavish chambers (for visitors) in this imposing neoclassical building and comes equipped with a visitor center. The Rathaus or City Hall at the Rathausplatz is an amazing building and my favourite in Vienna, and the area consists of a 19th-century park with statues, mature trees & fountains, plus summer cinema & winter ice rink (and we could see locals ice skating around this rink - just so comforting and fun!) - this is the local venue and Hhome to several of Vienna’s biggest events, including the Christkindlmarkt, Rathaus Film Festival, and Vienna Ice World. Nearby, we also saw the Café Landtmann which is yet another iconic and popular Classic cafe-restaurant with an illustrious clientele from Freud to McCartney, and comes with a shaded terrace. - Vienna District 9 & Lunch at Gasthaus Rebhuhn
Vienna contains 23 municipal districts, each with its own individual character and flavor, and so we visited District 9 one late morning on 26 January 2024. Alsergrund is the 9th district of Vienna. Alsergrund is an affluent suburb that includes much of the University of Vienna, several cozy business districts, and several hospitals. It has historical links to Franz Schubert, Ludwig van Beethoven, and Sigmund Freud, and many museums, galleries, and cultural institutions contribute to its distinct atmosphere. The 9th District is an elegant and historically rich area located north of the city center. With its graceful streets, stunning Art Noveau and Art Deco architecture, vibrant intellectual and cultural scene, and the modernity brought by the youth, Alsergrund exudes a charm that is both unique and captivating. Alsergrund’s storied past is beautifully interwoven with the bustling present, as the district is home to several universities, medical institutions, and the iconic Vienna Volksoper, one of the city’s most famous opera houses. Its captivating architectural style, known as Gründerzeit, reflects the contributions of numerous prominent architects and artists. Walking along the stretch of Servitengasse in Alsergrund, gives me a cool vibe of this trendy cool area, which is earmarked to be the next most happening precinct of Vienna, aside from the touristy districts and the cool districts of 5-8. An entire array of arts and craft shops, modern cafes, traditional restaurants steeped with historical charm and flavor the entire boulevard of the Servitenviertel area. A cute little duck which is pretty symbolic in some souvenir shops all across Vienna! Rehhuhn Gasthaus Next, we headed to the Rehhuhn Gasthaus, across the road junction, which is a very typical, very local traditional Austrian restaurant that the locals would go, for their daily meals. Given the authenticity of the place, that also allows dogs, I saw couples, seniors, families and corporates having lunch here.. Both Viennese families and tourists come here for reliable local Austrian fare – potato soup, fried chicken salad, schnitzel, goulash, roasted pork belly, apple strudel etc. My guide, Ms Ilse had a fritzy soda, which is a typical aperitif in Vienna (I had some on other occasions) but I had a nice draft Ottakringer Helles as my thirst quencher here. For appetizer, we both had the Cream of carrot-ginger soup (which is honestly one of the best soups I have had in my life, being a Cantonese, and we are very good in cooking traditional tonic and herbal soups, my rating for this simple soup is 9/10).. Ilse had the Breaded chicken, served with potatoes and green salad (which was nicely done) whilst I had a Boiled filet of beef, shredded potatoes, spinach and it came with two dips (almost similar to the traditional Tapelspitz, which comes with 2 versions, this version is the non-stew version).. My lunch was lovely, felt super comfy and love the home-cooked flavours, aromas, and homely ambience! Wonderful!
