HHLA Sky

At the auspices of the ARC Forum, we spoke with Matthias Gronstedt, Managing Director of drone company HHLA Sky. HHLA Sky works with an Integrated Control Center (ICC) Software and they enable automated BVLOS drone and mobile robot operations on an industrial scale. This robust process management and control center software comes with integrated hardware. The ICC automatically maps the entire process chain, including tasks, and can be integrated with the customer's IT systems to fully unlock efficiency potential.

Matthias shared that sectors that embrace critical infrastructure like chemical, energy and first responders are deploying their drones, for the purpose of technical inspections, construction site monitoring, perimeter protection and emergency services support e.g. crime scene surveillance to get real-time situational awareness. For ports, HHLA (Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG), the terminal operator at the Port of Hamburg, Germany and HOPA ports (Hamilton-Oshawa Port Authority) in Canada, they have been using drones for asset inspection, perimeter protection and predictive maintenance: mainly mapping and damage detecting. For sectors like logistics like Morpheus Logistik, Germany, the deployment leans towards special tools and spare part delivery and medical logistics.

We checked in with Matthias on the top trending issues in automation, and he shared that it is all about efficiency, and productivity, cost efficiency and sustainable innovation. Machine learning or AI, robotics, and cybersecurity are the key drivers here, and if we look at Application-driven autonomy for business performance, he mentioned "that's what drones and robotics in industry are all about". "Some trend-leading companies are focused on technology alone, while others are purely use case-driven."

Integration of emerging technologies

"At HHLA Sky, we bring both together: expertise in critical infrastructure, drones and mobile robots, BVLOS automation, AI, and cyber-secure technology".  "For autonomous asset inspections with accurate data for predictive maintenance and for more frequent safety inspections in oil and gas and energy without deploying personnel in danger zones, and also for perimeter protection in 24/7 autonomous patrols, or fast logistics"

Matthias opined that we should 'let autonomy do the heavy lifting", and to aim for safer operations, faster decision making, smarter asset performance, and generate your next margin driver"

"It’s time to scale autonomous drones and robots, and not just to modernize, but also to protect your EBIT, and to achieve this, it requires a comprehensive solution, which we have with the Open ICC". "ICC means: Integrated Control Center. This unified control center is an industrial IoT platform to remotely—or BLVOS—manage, automate, and secure fleets of drones, vehicles, robots, and IoT devices—at any scale". "It maps the entire process chain from ordering a drone or robot to operational control and data collection right down to AI-supported data analysis as we do with container gantry crane inspections for our parent company HHLA in the Port of Hamburg"

Lastly, we queried with Matthias if he sees if AI has been an effective enabler for digital automation as he viewed that "as I see it, is a tool that completes digitalization and drives efficiency even more". "For example, AI takes container gantry crane inspections to the next level, as the entire chain is becoming digital—and faster." There is a need to review matter at a bigger picture, that "this new level of fast inspections, instant or faster analysis, that more complete situational awareness becomes more pressing if you consider the current situation of critical infrastructure in Europe", due to the ongoing conflict in Europe but essentially, Matthias sees that "AI drives transformative improvements in inspection speed, data quality, and operational decision-making across industries".
