- CANCELLATION : F1 SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX 2020
12 June 2020, Singapore – Race promoter Singapore GP Pte Ltd and Formula 1 today announced the cancellation of the FORMULA 1 SINGAPORE AIRLINES SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX 2020, due to continuing nationwide restrictions on construction and business activities brought about by the COVID- 19 pandemic. While there are still more than three months to go before the scheduled race on 20 September, we regret to announce that we will be unable to proceed with the race due to the prohibitions imposed on access and construction of the event venue required for a street race to be held in the city. Confirmation of the cancellation will also give certainty to our fans, ticketholders, and commercial partners. Apart from the closure of the event venue, other challenges include ongoing mass gathering and worldwide travel restrictions. These and other measures were understandably put in place by the Singapore Government and the various authorities to prioritise safety and are targeted to manage the COVID-19 pandemic. With these limitations, which continue to remain in place, building and construction work of the circuit, which normally commences in May, have not been able to commence. We are therefore unable to complete the race circuit infrastructure in time for the race to take place. “The last few months have been extremely challenging on all fronts, and we have now made this difficult decision which Formula 1 and our stakeholders accept we have had to take. Ultimately, the health and safety of our contractors and their workers, spectators, Formula 1 crew, staff and volunteer marshals is our number one priority and we thank everyone for their patience and unwavering support thus far. While we are disappointed that we won’t be able to host the race this year, we look forward to welcoming fans to the race next season and wish the Formula 1 community well as it starts its season in July,” said Mr Colin Syn, Deputy Chairman of Singapore GP Pte Ltd (SGP). Ms Ong Ling Lee, Director, Sports, Singapore Tourism Board, commented: “The Singapore Tourism Board (STB) supports the joint decision by race promoter Singapore GP Pte Ltd and Formula 1 to cancel the Formula 1 Singapore Airlines Singapore Grand Prix 2020, as this safeguards the health and wellbeing of participants, fans and all Singaporeans. Since 2008, the F1 race has generated benefits for both Singapore and the F1 franchise, with many local businesses actively involved in race preparations and operations. We take pride in our track record of hosting the first and only F1 night street race for the past 12 years, and we look forward to its return next year.” Singapore GP will provide existing ticketholders with automatic refunds within 30 business days, or if preferred, an option to rollover their ticket to next year’s event. Ticketholders will be contacted with more information on the next steps. Ticketholders who purchased via SGP’s Authorised Ticketing Partners should contact them for refunds. In the meantime, Formula 1 fans in Singapore can look forward to a host of exciting programmes in the coming months as part of our continued efforts to engage fans and promote the sport. ABOUT THE FORMULA 1 SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX Singapore has successfully hosted a decade of night racing and Asia’s only street race on the Formula 1® calendar in the Republic since 2008. The Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix will continue to enthral crowds with its unique combination of night race action and world-class entertainment till 2021. See the world’s finest drivers go wheel-to-wheel under lights at speeds of up to 320km/h, threading the barriers around Singapore’s picturesque Marina Bay featuring a spectacular backdrop of iconic heritage buildings, modern architecture and a stunning skyline.
- Morton’s The Steakhouse
Morton’s The Steakhouse New Menu Offerings Dec 2020 Long before the current generation of steakhouses like Cut and Wolfgang Steakhouse burst onto the scene, Morton’s The Steakhouse was one of the early pioneers to open in Singapore more than 20 years ago. Despite the keen competition from the new kids on the block, Morton’s is still the grand daddy of steakhouses still operating in their original location at Mandarin Oriental Hotel. We decided to drop by on a Monday evening for dinner to utilize some of our travel budget since international borders are currently closed and travel is not allowed. The place was packed full house for a Monday night. Although Morton’s is famous for its steaks, there is a little known fact that it also serves non beef dishes on their menu. We decided to try some of these as we were told by our assigned wait staff that there were some new items recently added to the menu. We ordered the Bacon Steaks $38 and Tuna Tacos $39.50 for starters. The Tuna Tacos was very fresh and zesty and the crispy tacos paired really well with our house white wine. The Bacon Steaks was well marinated and not too salty or fatty. Another new item on the menu which we tried was the Seared Sea Scallops with Lobster and Caviar Butter $115. The Scallops were crispy on the outside and fresh and succulent on the inside. The lobster was also fresh and juicy. We had the Filet Mignon Oscar style with Lobster on top. We have dined at Morton’s many times over the years and the consistency of its steaks stays true to course day in, day out. We had 2 sides to pair with the mains. Lobster Macaroni and Cheese $58 and Truffled Mashed Cauliflower $28. They were really yummy and delicious, and good value for money. To round off the evening, we had to have the legendary Morton’s Signature Hot Chocolate Lava Cake $38. It was oozing with hot chocolate lava upon first bite. It was not too sweet and it offered a perfect sweet ending to our evening. - EagleWings Loft Bistro : Review
EagleWings Loft is a casual family bistro located at the redeveloped King Albert Park which brings back fond memories for us as we used to hang out at the MacDonalds there during our school days. The EagleWings Group is now the anchor tenant there with their clinic, cinema and this bistro. The decor has a ship theme that makes you feel as if you are dining on board a private yacht, and this stems from the founder Dr Julian Theng’s love for yachts and ships. We decided to drop by one weekday evening for dinner and started off with the Wild Mushroom Soup $8. We were told all the ingredients in the soup were painstakenly prepared from scratch, with no shortcuts or cutting corners. The soup was thick, concentrated and robust, unlike the watered down versions served at some other places. For mains, we chose the Signature Wagyu Steak $36. Overall it passed muster, however certain parts of my cut were slightly dry and inconsistent. We suspect the cut was too thick and it made cooking the steak a bit of a challenge. The taste was alright, with the saltiness and pepper well sprinkled and balanced. We had to try their other signature of course, the Lobster Risotto $38. This was an amazing price for a lobster dish. The lobster was fresh and crunchy and paired really well with the risotto. To round off the evening, we decided to call the night a cheat night and ordered 2 desserts. First was a Valrhona Brownie topped with home made vanilla gelato. The Brownie was warm and freshly prepared and the vanila gelato was a healthy alternative to the traditional ice cream. We were told we could order Acai from the Acai joint next door and it was delivered to our table. We had the Acai superbowl $6.07 which was choke full of antioxidants and nutrients. Overall Verdict: The Wagyu steak could have room for improvement but we were generally pleased with the rest of the dishes at wallet friendly prices. We would definitely return to dine again if we are around the Bukit Timah area. Exclusively for our Rosette Media readers, do quote this discount code (EW2710) to get 10% off your total bill. We made dinner reservations at Ginett restaurant downstairs to fully utilize our $50 dining credits. The restaurant was running a full house with a mix of regulars and walk ins and we were told they are fully packed almost every day. We had the grain fed Australian Wagyu Marbling M5 400 days grain fed $49 for a 250g cut which was extremely well marbled and juicy. It was a bargain for $49, where a similar dish in a high end steakhouse would cost at least double. We tried the traditional French Beef Consomme Onion Soup $14, served with gratinated Gruyere crouton. The flavours were robust and tasty and we were told it was prepared from scratch without any shortcuts. We also ordered the traditional Carbonara $16 with cream, bacon, egg and parmesan. We had a good night’s sleep and woke up bright and early for breakfast. Welcome to the new normal, where the traditional breakfast buffet has been replaced with an ala-carte set menu. - Si Chuan Dou Hua Kitchener
Nostalgic Dim Sum Feast at Si Chuan Dou Hua Kitchener Returns by Popular Demand From 18 September till 31 December 2020 | Minimum of two to dine Executive Chef Leung Wing Chung (执行广东主厨梁永祥师傅), together with his team of chefs, proudly presents the return of up to 40 fine-crafted dim sum items, Chef’s speciality premium dishes and desserts in a hearty dim sum feast that evokes a sense of nostalgia. Other highlights include mainstays such as Steamed Vegetarian Dumpling with Black Truffle (松露上素饺), “Siew Mai” with Diced Abalone (鲍鱼仔烧卖), and Steamed Chicken Feet with Beancurd Skin (枝竹蒸凤爪). We are natural suckers for ala-carte all you can eat dim sum buffets, order from the menu, and the food will be prepared piping hot and served fresh to your table. Welcome to the new normal of buffets! Tuesdays to Thursdays (Lunch) SGD46++ per Adult Fridays to Sundays, and Public Holidays (Lunch) SGD52++ Per Adult | Bundle offer at SGD188++ for 4 Adults https://www.sichuandouhua.com/images/article/promotion/Menus/Nostalgic_Dim_Sum_Feast_2020_-_Digital_Menu.pdf So we started off with the “One Serving only” items. The 黄焖鲍鱼刺参汤 Braised Abalone and Spiky Sea Cucumber Soup was hearty, robust and full of flavours. Just like Grandma’s double boiled home cooked nourishing soups. The 川粤大拼盘(烧鸭,烧肉,口水鸡,凉拌三丝)(Roasted Duck, Roasted Pork, Chong Qing Chilled Chicken with Spicy Bean Sauce, Assorted Shredded Carrot withAssorted Mushroom) was not too bad as well. The duck skin was crispy, the meat was moist and tender, roasted pork had a crackling sensation, and the chilled chicken was tender and juicy. The 金枕辣椒大红虾Chilli Prawns served with Deep-fried Mantou reminded us of chilli crabs in a similar sauce with the mantou dipped into the tomato base gravy. Ooh….. 滨纷香果比目鱼Halibut Fillet in Passion Fruit Sauce with Fresh Fruit – This was deep fried to perfection and very crispy. 重庆辣子鸡“Chong Qing” Diced Chicken with Spicy Dried Chilli – The mala was very spicy and gave our palates a numbing effect. The kick gave us a tingling sensation on our taste buds but it was a very enjoyable dish. 银鱼金蒜油麦菜Stir-fried “You Mai” Vegetable with Silver Fish and Garlic – We don’t usually order stir fried vegetables when dining out. How difficult is it to stir fry it at home? The wait staff perusaded us to give it a try though, and we were pretty impressed with this rendition. After maximising our “one serving only” allocation, we moved in on the dim sum items 松露上素饺Steamed Vegetarian Dumpling with Black Truffle 芫茜虾饺皇Prawn Dumpling with Coriander 鲍鱼仔烧卖“Siew Mai” with Diced Abalone 银鱼金蒜油麦菜Minced Fish Dumpling in Superior Stock 那些年烧腩卷Signature Pork Belly Roll with Yam 古法萝卜糕Stir-fried Carrot Cake The barometer of any dim sum restaurant is the Har Gow and Siew Mai. If these bread and butter items are no good, there is no need to try the rest of the dishes on the menu. Both were brilliant executed and steamed to perfection. The prawns were fresh, crunchy, juicy and succulent and the skin was not too thick. It would definitely pair well with Champagne. 港式鹑蛋猪脚醋Braised Pig Shank and Quail Egg in Vinegar and Ginger – a popular confinement food. The collagen in the skin was so soft that it melted in our mouths and the meat was tender and juicy. We were so full by now and sad to say, we failed in our bid to conquer all 40 items on the menu. To round off the afternoon, we only ordered 2 out of the 10 dessert items on the menu. 黄小米白果腐竹Double-boiled Gingko Nuts, Beancurd Skin and Millet 枸杞甜豆花Homemade Bean Curd with Wolfberry Very nutritious and healthy desserts indeed, and not too sweet. Overall Verdict: An extremely value for money all-you-can-eat ala carte dim sum buffet for this amazing price. To benchmark this against other dim sum joints and ordering via the ala carte menu, with typical items costing $5-10 per dish, it is a no-brainer to opt for this. Tip: Skip breakfast and go on an empty stomach to fill up and skip dinner. So you pay $46++ and have your 3 meals in a day covered. Really worth it, what more can we say… Tuesdays to Thursdays (Lunch) SGD46++ per Adult Fridays to Sundays, and Public Holidays (Lunch) SGD52++ Per Adult | Bundle offer at SGD188++ for 4 Adults For dining reservations or enquiries, please call +65 6428 3170 or email douhua.prskt@parkroyalhotels.com.Contact us Address: PARKROYAL Hotel, 181 Kitchener Road, Singapore 208533
- Kazbar : Review
Lebanon is seen as one of the smallest countries in the Middle East; its cuisine has Phoenician origins and sahre roots with the Mediterranean cooking and is often considered as father of other Middle Eastern cuisines. We could draw a parallel between Lebanese and Chinese food which is communal style with many sharing dishes on the table. Kazbar is probably one of the first and one of the best Lebanese restaurants in Singapore, starting out at its current location at Capital Square almost 20 years ago. In this modern day and age of the cut throat F&B scene, where restaurants come and go every 3-6 months or so, the fact that Kazbar has been a mainstay in the Middle Eastern cuisine trade is tantamount to its superb food quality and hospitable service which keeps drawing the regulars back week in week out. We dropped by one evening to savour their award winning Lebanese cuisine, which was a refreshing change from the usual Western, French, Italian, European, Fusion style concepts in town. It was a full house on a weekday evening with a good mix of expats and CBD working crowd, despote most people still working from home in pandemic times like this. We started off with some cold starters. Eggplant $8.50 : Garlic Spinach (Hindbeh Biel Ziet) $14.50: Hummus (Fine ground chickpeas with tahini sauce, garlic and lemo juice and extra virgin olive oil) $8: Zaatar Bread (Arabic Bread baked with Lebanese Oregano and Extra Virgin Olive Oil) $5.50: Labneh (Yoghurt mixed with garlic, a hint of mint and topped with extra virgin olive oil) $9.50: Tabouleh (a light uplifting salad of fine fresj parsley, burghul, onion and tomato salad with fresh lemon juice and extra virgin oil dressing) $10.50: What is a Middle Eastern experience without Lebanese Wine? We have never tried Lebanese wine before, so we ordered the house white wine, Chateau Ksara Merwah $52 per bottle. It was a pale yellow wine with greenish reflections, which offered intense citrus and whte flowers with mineral notes on the nose. It was full of tropical fruit with undertones of guava, lime, and summer melon. It paired really well with the starters. It was time to warm the bellies with some hot starters. Chicken Wings (Jawaneh) $16: Arab style marinated and charcoal grilled to perfection served with homemade harissa. It was oozing with juices and flavours when we took our first bite. Once you start, you can’t stop eating this. Falafel (Chickpea and Coriander Patties served with Tahini sauce) $15: As we are on the Keto diet, this was a keto-friendly healthy dish marinated in natural spices and offers a meatless alternative to traditional meat patties or even the plant based options like Impossible Burgers. Sambousek (Minced Lamb marinated in Yoghurt cooked in Sumac mixed with onion and Pine Nuts, wrapped in homemade pastry) $14.50: We were pretty stuffed with the cold and hot starters and dips by now, but we had to make room in the stomach for the mains. Lamb Kabab Kishkash (Grilled Minced Lamb served on a bed of tomato sauce garnished with onion and parsley) $26: Kofta Dijaj (Grilled Minced spiced Chicken Breast served with Saffron rice, grilled vegetables, babas and spicy bread) $23: Seafood Kebab (Lebanese style marinated Fish and Prawns charcoal grilled and served with garlic spinach) $33: We ordered a bottle of house Lebanese red wine Chateau Ksara Le Prieure $52 to pair with our mains. The full bodied structure and complexity of the red wine paired really well with the smokiness and flavours of the lamb, fish and meats. To round off the evening with something sweet, the wait staff suggested their house speciality Um Ali (Mother of Ali) $12, which was soaked in rose water, sugar and fresh milk and garnished with pistachio. On first impression, it looked like baby oats or cereal but it tasted really good on the palate. Mystical – Magical – Mesmerizing : The Stage is Set for the Memory to Live Again at Sands Theatre : Marina Bay Sands Following its triumphant season in London’s West End, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s record-breaking musical CATS comes to the Sands Theatre at Marina Bay Sands for a strictly limited season from December 17 2019. Tickets are on sale via Marina Bay Sands ticketing and SISTIC. Based on T. S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, the show is set amongst a larger-than-life junkyard playground and is alive with our favourite feline characters including Rum Tum Tugger, Mr. Mistoffelees, Macavity, Jennyanydots, Old Deuteronomy, Grizabella and Skimbleshanks. The Jellicle Cats come out to play on one special night of the year – the night of the Jellicle Ball. One by one they tell their stories for the amusement of Old Deuteronomy, their wise and benevolent leader, who must choose one of the Cats to ascend to The Heaviside Layer and be reborn into a whole new Jellicle life. CATS, one of the longest-running shows in West End and Broadway history, received its world premiere at the New London Theatre in 1981 where it played for 21 record-breaking years and almost 9,000 performances. The ground-breaking production was the winner of the Olivier and Evening Standard Awards for Best Musical. In 1983 the Broadway production became the recipient of seven Tony awards including Best Musical, and ran for 18 years. Since its world premiere, CATS has been presented in over 30 countries, has been translated into 15 languages and has been seen by more than 81 million people worldwide. The magnificent musical score composed by the legendary Andrew Lloyd Webber, includes the poignant hit song ‘Memory’, which has been recorded by over 150 artists from Barbra Streisand and Johnny Mathis to Liberace and Barry Manilow. We so love this lovely rendition of Memory by the character Grizabella that depicts a melancholic remembrance of her glamorous past and as a plea for acceptance. ‘Memory; is indeed the classique of the musical! - Golden Peony Conrad Centennial Hotel
New Weekday Set Lunch Menu Golden Peony reopens with a new menu that promises to take guests on an exciting gastronomic journey with premium ingredients prepared skilfully to bring out all its natural flavours. With Executive Chef Ku at the helm of the kitchen, you can be certain that the dishes are both authentic and nostalgic. We dropped by on a weekday afternoon to try out the special set menu starting from $68++ per person. We started off with some Long Jing and Pu Er Mandarin Peel tea served traditionally. We were pleasantly surprised with a complimentary pre-appretizer of Bak Kwa and Century Egg coated in Salted Egg Crumbs. A pretty normal dish to stimulate the appetite. We were served the 1st dish on the set menu. 特 色 伦 敦 鸭 两 味 拼 黑 天 鹅 酥 London’ Duck Pancake Roll, Parma Ham, Pineapple, Crispy Beancurd Skin Swan Pastry with Chili Crab Meat Chef Ku’s plating and presentation was exquisite and meticulous. The combination of different umami flavours from the duck, parma ham and chili crab meat fused together seamlessly. 金 瓜 盅 螺 头 炖 竹 笙 干 贝 鲍 鱼 仔 汤 Double-boiled Baby Abalone Soup with Sea Whelk, Conpoy, Bamboo Pith in Mini Golden Pumpkin The yardstick barometer of any Cantonese restaurant has to be the soup, just like the bread and butter dish of a zichar stall in a coffeshop is the humble Horfun. If the Horfun has no “wok hei” then there is no need to try the other dishes. Chef Ku’s doubled boiled soup was robust, well balanced and intense, yet does not overpower your senses with too much flavours. 湘 式 剁 椒 蒸 鲈 鱼 Steamed Sea Perch, Capsicum Preserved Chili From the Cod family, the is an uber healthy dish brilliantly executed. It was steamed to perfection with the Capsicum Preserved Chili oozing with Umami flavours. XO酱 蒙 古 黑 豚 肉 扒 Baked Kurobuta Pork with Bacon and XO Chili Sauce Not any ordinary pork but a nice cut of Kurobuta, with the perfect balance of fats and meat. Any cut that is too lean will taste really dry and flat, and any cut that is too fatty will make you “jelak”. We reckon this prized cut may be the “Bu Jian Tian” or just under the pig’s armpit. 姜 葱 滑 蛋 大 头 虾 脆 面 球 Stewed River Prawn with Crispy Egg Noodle Ball, Ginger, Spring Onion and Egg Gravy This is a different intepretation from the usual crispy “Yee mee” served at your neighbourhood zichar stalls. It takes some skill to deep fry the noodle and ensure it curls up and remains as a ball, before pouring the gravy in. The River Prawn was large, succulent, fresh, naturally sweet and juicy. 牛 油 果 香 草 雪 糕 拼 红 豆 椰 汁 糕 Chilled Cream of Avocado, Vanilla Ice Cream Red Bean, Coconut Pudding Overall Verdict: An extremely good deal and value for money weekday set lunch at $68++ per person, for executive business meetings or quiet conversations. OPENING HOURS Tuesday – Sunday (Closed on Mondays) Lunch: 11:30 – 14:30 (The above set lunch is only available from Tuesday to Friday) Dinner: 18:30 – 22:30 Reservations are available and encouraged, adhering to the group size limit of 5 and below. - La Brasserie Weekend - Le Brunch by the Bay
Enjoy La Brasserie signatures and brunch favourites, freshly cooked upon order and delivered to the table. Weekends are made for leisurely brunching and La Brasserie at The Fullerton Bay Hotel Singapore has long indulged in this tradition. The splendid repast features a carefully curated menu of signature La Brasserie highlights alongside brunch essentials. To ensure maximum flavour and food safety, all dishes are cooked to order and delivered to the table. For those who desire celebratory weekend tipples, there is also a free-flow of bubbly and delicious signature cocktails on offer. Welcome to the new normal of champagne buffet brunches where you choose your food from a menu and each dish is prepared fresh in the kitchen and plated individually to be served to your table, in small tasting portions. The ambience is chic and classy with a nice view of the waterfront bay although it was raining when we were there. The wait staff patiently explained the different pricing options to us. $118 per adult for the basic ala-carte buffet with free flow of chilled juices and soft drinks. Great option for Teetotallers. $148 per adult with free flow of beer, house pour red and white wines and signature Bloody Marys $168 per adult with free flow of Veuve Clicquot NV Champagne, beer, house pour red and white wines and signature Bloody Marys $238 per adult with free flow Ruinart Blanc de Blanc Champagne and all the drink options listed above We opted for the Ruinart as it was one of our favourtite champagnes and one of the oldest Champagne Houses in Champagne. 100% Chardonnay which would pair perfectly with most of the dishes. We started off our gastronomic journey with the Ocean Catch, a selection of fresh poached seafood (Snow Crab, Maine Lobster, Tiger Prawn, Scallop and Bouchot Mussel) with housemade dips. The seafood was fresh and exuberated a tinge of natural sweetness, and paired perfectly with the Ruinart Blanc de Blancs Champagne, because of its fresh citrus spectrum of flavours and creamy minerality. Butter Baked Escargots with Garlic, Parsley and Garlic Bread. Large, fresh and juicy. Champignon & Truffle from The Tureen. Thick, robust and full of flavours. Now for the mains – we had to try almost every dish to get our money’s worth. Grilled Cote De Boeuf – Thyme Butter Roasted Rib Eye Bordelaise Beef Cheeks with Caramelised Heirloom Vegetables We were told these Beef Cheeks have been slow cooked for many many hours to achieve the tenderness and melt-in-the-mouth texture and umami. Confit De Canard – Crispy Duck Confit with Haricots Verts, Hazelnut Valencia Orange Reduction Slow Roasted Herb-Crusted Lamb Chops, Roasted Shallots and Rosemary Jus Truffle Angel Hair Pasta with Shio Kombu and Sakura Ebi We are not fans of carbs, but this dish was brilliantly executed. The pasta was springy and al dente and was not too hard or soft. Wild Mushroom Risotto We moved on to try the Asiatique cuisine which the hotel is also famous for. Chicken and Beef Satays, and the Crispy Roasted Crackling Pork Belly. The “Siew Yoke” was indeed crackling and crispy to its claim, and we could not help but to order 3 repeat servings. Absolutely worth the fats and calories, washed down by the Ruinart. We were pretty stuffed and over the limit by now, and ended the afternoon with desserts and the Plateau De Fromage. 64% Mousse Au Chocolat Le “Apple” – Apple Lime Compote, Vanilla Creme, Yuzu Sorbet Creme Brulee Ice Cream Plateau De Fromage Overall Verdict: Well worth the money, given that most of the dishes are also served in the ala-carte menu, ranging from $20-50 per dish. Although the portions in this ala-carte buffet are smaller than the standard sized ones in the ala-carte menu, you get the opportunity to sample a greater variety of tasting portion dishes. We were told by the staff that the most popular drinks package is the Veuve Clicquot, but go for the free flow Ruinart option if you can, for the supplement top up, to truly enjoy a decadent pairing experience. Do make your reservations in advance as the restaurant has been running full house every weekend since the end of the circuit breaker. Le Brunch by the Bay is available only on Saturdays and Sundays from 12.00 p.m. to 3.00 p.m. (last pour 2.45 p.m.) For enquiries or reservations, please contact Dining Reservations at (65) 6877 8911/8912 or email dining-rsvp@fullertonhotels.com.
