- Painting with Light • Festival of International Films on Art
Painting with Light returns to National Gallery Singapore for its sixth edition, highlighting filmmakers who delve into art, culture, and pressing social issues of their time. The festival, running from 4 to 14 September 2025, features over 45 feature-length and short films from Singapore, Southeast Asia, and beyond, encouraging audiences to view art through the lens of film in novel ways. Since its inception in 2017, Painting with Light has been the Gallery’s flagship film festival focused on international films about art. Each edition assembles artist films, films about art, arthouse cinema, and restored classics in a carefully curated program, providing diverse entry points for audiences of all backgrounds to engage with black box screenings and beyond in meaningful and accessible ways. This year’s festival is organized into eight sections, showcasing a variety of genres that capture the filmmakers’ social concerns, fostering reflection and dialogue on issues that transcend borders and remain highly relevant today. These genres include artist films, arthouse cinema, documentaries on art, and works newly commissioned and restored by the Gallery. Highlights include Lav Diaz’s epic "Magellan" (2025), the world premiere of Virgilio “Pandy” Aviado’s restored experimental film "1978 Footages" (1978), and Kateryna Gornostai’s mosaic-like documentary "Timestamp" (2025). Audiences will also have the rare chance to engage with filmmakers, artists, and the Gallery’s curators, as well as partake in specially curated exhibition tours. Starting 5 September 2025, festival attendees can, for the first time, enjoy a dedicated Festival Lounge to connect with fellow film enthusiasts and industry professionals over free film screenings. Dr. Seng Yu Jin, Senior Curator and Director, Curatorial, Research & Exhibitions at National Gallery Singapore, states, “We’re excited to welcome audiences back for another edition of Painting with Light. This year’s festival continues the Gallery’s mission to reimagine Southeast Asian art by exploring how film can offer fresh perspectives on the region and the world. Our lineup features exceptional works by regional filmmakers that draw on Southeast Asia’s art history and reflect on the social and political issues shaping our time. From thought-provoking feature films to innovative short works and free screenings throughout the Gallery, Painting with Light has something for everyone. We invite audiences to discover the moving image as an inspiring, accessible, and powerful way to reflect on our shared experiences and connect with each other.” Festival to open with Lav Diaz’s new film, Magellan Two standout events anchor this year’s Painting with Light, emphasizing a strong commitment to storytelling with universal themes that address social issues influencing the region today, through the voices of Southeast Asian filmmakers. The festival opens with "Magellan" (2025) by Lav Diaz, an acclaimed Filipino filmmaker and one of Southeast Asia’s most notable auteurs, following its world premiere at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. In this reinterpretation, Diaz retraces the personal journey of the titular Portuguese explorer, encouraging audiences to question long-held narratives about this historical figure and the myth of civilization that fueled colonial ambition. The film invites audiences to confront the enduring legacies of conquest and resistance that still resonate globally. The festival concludes innovatively with "We Are Toast" (2025), an interdisciplinary live cinema performance by Singaporean artist duo Mark Chua and Lam Li Shuen. They use multiple 16mm projectors and film loops treated with coffee, pandan leaves, and coconut milk alongside a live soundscape to transcend traditional filmmaking boundaries. Rooted in the artists’ reflections on contemporary Singapore, the work deconstructs the image of kaya toast to explore layers of culture and identity, prompting audiences to consider how these social realities continue to evolve and resonate across borders. This year’s Painting with Light focuses on stories from Southeast Asia and beyond that resonate across cultures, exploring enduring questions and concerns. From intimate portraits to sweeping epics, the festival opens conversations bridging perspectives, sparking curiosity, and offering new ways of seeing our changing world. Its film selection highlights how art can express complex and challenging social issues, embrace experimentation in cinematic form, and provide a platform for voices not traditionally represented in film. This year’s festival also features Southeast Asian Shorts, a free daily drop-in screening program co-curated with guest programmer Viknesh Kobinathan, recognized by Screen International as a Future Leader in programming and curation, a distinction acknowledging rising talents shaping the global film and media landscape. Showcasing short films from the region, this series amplifies emerging and innovative storytelling, reflecting the Gallery’s aim to expand art discourse through inventive and thought-provoking practices. Admission is free for Singaporeans and Permanent Residents (PRs). All films will be screened onsite at the Gallery, with both free and ticketed programmes available. Tickets can be purchased via the festival’s microsite on National Gallery’s website here.

Festival attendees can marvel at the National Museum of Singapore's iconic façade, illuminated by MOSAIC, an awe-inspiring creation by French artist and projection mapping pioneer Jérémie Bellot. This installation takes viewers on a journey through celestial constellations and historical maps, exploring themes of navigation and island discovery in the region. With the skillful incorporation of kebaya and batik patterns, MOSAIC also celebrates 60 years of diplomatic relations between Singapore and France. In this collaboration, she crafted two exclusive wraps that merge imagination and movement: • “Blue Haze” – BYD ATTO 2 Wrap “Part robot, part sea creature, these manta rays are inspired by the pulse of city life and the sleekness of technology — always in motion, always alive, gliding with mechanical grace through imagined currents of steel and light.” • “Springtime!” – BYD DOLPHIN Wrap “Inspired by dolphins, whales, and the essence of spring, this design envisions smiling flowers blooming behind swimming whales — soft, joyful moments that encourage us to slow down and appreciate life, especially in a city that never rests.” Although these wraps are not for sale, they illustrate how mobility and creativity intersect, supporting BYD's vision of EVs as mediums for expression, individuality, and storytelling. An EV Ownership Experience That’s Truly Worry-Free Every BYD ATTO 2 comes with one of the strongest ownership packages in its class: • 10 Years Battery Warranty • 10 Years Free Servicing • 6 Years Vehicle Warranty This guarantees peace of mind and a smooth transition to electric vehicles for both first-time EV buyers and experienced car owners. The BYD ATTO 2 is offered at a special launch price of $159,388, which includes a guaranteed COE. You can schedule test drives and make bookings right away at authorized BYD showrooms throughout Singapore. Visit www.simemotors.com.my for more information.

HHLA Sky works with an Integrated Control Center (ICC) Software and they enable automated BVLOS drone and mobile robot operations on an industrial scale. This robust process management and control center software comes with integrated hardware. The ICC automatically maps the entire process chain, including tasks, and can be integrated with the customer's IT systems to fully unlock efficiency potential. Matthias shared that sectors that embrace critical infrastructure like chemical, energy and first responders are deploying their drones, for the purpose of technical inspections, construction site monitoring, perimeter protection and emergency services support e.g. crime scene surveillance to get real-time situational awareness. For ports, HHLA (Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG), the terminal operator at the Port of Hamburg, Germany and HOPA ports (Hamilton-Oshawa Port Authority) in Canada, they have been using drones for asset inspection, perimeter protection and predictive maintenance: mainly mapping and damage detecting. For sectors like logistics like Morpheus Logistik, Germany, the deployment leans towards special tools and spare part delivery and medical logistics. We checked in with Matthias on the top trending issues in automation, and he shared that it is all about efficiency, and productivity, cost efficiency and sustainable innovation. Machine learning or AI, robotics, and cybersecurity are the key drivers here, and if we look at Application-driven autonomy for business performance, he mentioned "that's what drones and robotics in industry are all about". "Some trend-leading companies are focused on technology alone, while others are purely use case-driven." Integration of emerging technologies "At HHLA Sky, we bring both together: expertise in critical infrastructure, drones and mobile robots, BVLOS automation, AI, and cyber-secure technology". "For autonomous asset inspections with accurate data for predictive maintenance and for more frequent safety inspections in oil and gas and energy without deploying personnel in danger zones, and also for perimeter protection in 24/7 autonomous patrols, or fast logistics" Matthias opined that we should 'let autonomy do the heavy lifting", and to aim for safer operations, faster decision making, smarter asset performance, and generate your next margin driver" "It’s time to scale autonomous drones and robots, and not just to modernize, but also to protect your EBIT, and to achieve this, it requires a comprehensive solution, which we have with the Open ICC". "ICC means: Integrated Control Center. This unified control center is an industrial IoT platform to remotely—or BLVOS—manage, automate, and secure fleets of drones, vehicles, robots, and IoT devices—at any scale". "It maps the entire process chain from ordering a drone or robot to operational control and data collection right down to AI-supported data analysis as we do with container gantry crane inspections for our parent company HHLA in the Port of Hamburg" Lastly, we queried with Matthias if he sees if AI has been an effective enabler for digital automation as he viewed that "as I see it, is a tool that completes digitalization and drives efficiency even more". "For example, AI takes container gantry crane inspections to the next level, as the entire chain is becoming digital—and faster." There is a need to review matter at a bigger picture, that "this new level of fast inspections, instant or faster analysis, that more complete situational awareness becomes more pressing if you consider the current situation of critical infrastructure in Europe", due to the ongoing conflict in Europe but essentially, Matthias sees that "AI drives transformative improvements in inspection speed, data quality, and operational decision-making across industries".
