The Inner Landscape – a solo exhibition by American Artist Heather Goodwind unveiled at Asian Art Platform. Singapore, February 2017 – This March Asian Art Platform presents The Inner Landscape, a solo exhibition featuring the work of American artist Heather Goodwind. Running from 10th March till 24th March , Heather Goodwind’s exhibition unveils a series of paintings which explores a singular idea or concept in a pleasant abstract manner. Heather discovers the artistic significance from the invisible things in life; thoughts and emotions inspire the shape and figures that dance across the surface of her drawing. Her works is all about exploring that particular time, mood or space within which the drawing is being created. It is a play of chance, somewhat similar to that in Jackson Pollock’s action painting or the expressionist productions of the Dadaist, but also with an intuitive approach that is unique to the artist herself. “My drawings represents a constant outpouring of singular impressions: clearly isolated images that capture flashes of emotion, changes in perception or moments of recognition. I give fleeting thoughts and much consideration as monumental ideas: nothing is more important than anything else and every small thing has its place.” – Heather Goodwind Volcano I & II by Heather Goodwind – 2015, 56×36 cm, Mixed Media on Paper Artist Biography Heather Goodwind was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania in 1973, and grew up between Berkeley, California and Key West, Florida. ArtScience Museum explores: The Universe and Art Discover humanity’s age-old fascination with the Universe through ancient and contemporary artworks Space Investors by Jules de Balincourt, 2015 Photo courtesy of Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac SINGAPORE (2 March 2017) – Embark on an artistic voyage through space and explore humanity’s vision of the stars at ArtScience Museum’s upcoming exhibition, The Universe and Art. Making its debut on 1 April 2017, The Universe and Art examines humanity’s fascination with the Universe and what lies beyond. As the subject of dreams, mythologies and artistic explorations, the Universe has been studied by people around the world for millennia. Featuring over 120 artworks, scientific artefacts and manuscripts, this exhibition presents global views of the Universe through the centuries. It weaves a rich constellation of Eastern and Western philosophies, ancient and contemporary art, science and religion, to examine humanity’s origins, presence and future in the Universe. Jointly curated and organised by Mori Art Museum and ArtScience Museum, The Universe and Art begins with sacred religious artefacts linked to Buddhism, Hinduism and Jainism. It continues with masterworks by the most renowned Renaissance astronomers, Galileo, Kepler, Newton and Copernicus, which are on show in Singapore for the first time. New scientific thinking on the Universe is explored in contemporary artworks by Björn Dahlem, MORI Mariko, Pierre Huyghe, Andreas Gursky, Wolfgang Tillmans, SUGIMOTO Hiroshi and more. The exhibition concludes with artworks devised specifically for space, providing unique insights on how art and culture have influenced the way we explore the Universe. “As a museum that explores the intersection of art and science, we are thrilled to have masterpieces by some of the greatest astronomers who ever lived on show in Singapore for the first time, alongside stunning artworks by leading visionaries within contemporary art. The Universe and Art celebrates humanity’s age-old fascination with the Universe and its mysteries. The exhibition shows how it has been an object of religious worship, a source of artistic and literary inspiration, and the basis of some of the most revolutionary scientific discoveries of all time. Thanks to extraordinary advances in technology, radical new theories and vast international science endeavours, we are now living through a golden age of discovery in astronomy. This exhibition helps put this in context for us by showing how our understanding of the Universe has evolved over the ages,” said Honor Harger, Executive Director, ArtScience Museum at Marina Bay Sands. “In essence, the exhibited items are the history of the questions about the reason for one’s existence that human beings have always pursued, as well as the trajectory of the dreams and romance we have had with the Universe. In the not-too-distant future will come the days when people travel in space on a regular basis. There might be no answer to the eternal question of where we came from. We hope, however, this exhibition will provide visitors with an opportunity to think about their outlook on the universe and the humanity of the future.” said Fumio Nanjo, Director, Mori Art Museum. The exhibition narrative unfolds through four main themes: Our Vision of the Universe The first section of the exhibition focuses on historical cosmologies from around the world. Religious art from the Buddhist, Hindu and Jain traditions show how we conceived the cosmos as multidimensional from the earliest of times. Shown in Singapore for the first time is Kokugakuin University Collection’s handscroll of Taketori Monogatari (“The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter”), Japan’s oldest narrative on space. It depicts an encounter with Princess Kaguya, who was from the Moon. This work and others show visitors how stories and myths helped shape our perception of the heavens. The birth of astronomy as a modern science is charted through a remarkable collection of artefacts from the East and West, including star-charts from the 7th Century to the Edo period in Japan, and astronomical texts from the medieval Islamic world. Visitors will have the rare opportunity to view numerous unique first edition works by some of the most renowned astronomers of the Renaissance period – Copernicus, Galileo, Kepler and Newton. The Universe as Space-Time In this section, new scientific advances are explored through the works of contemporary artists. Enigmatic cosmological phenomena such as black holes, dark matter and the ekpyrotic Universe are explored through artworks by Björn Dahlem, MORI Mariko and others. Stunning depictions of new cutting-edge instruments designed to observe the Universe by three of the world’s leading contemporary photographers – Andreas Gursky, Trevor Paglen and Wolfgang Tillmans – will also be on display. A New View of Life The potential for life on other worlds has been a constant source of fascination for both artists and scientists alike. The exhibition explores the origin of life in the cosmos, and ponders whether we are alone. Contemporary depictions of alien worlds by internationally revered artists such as Laurent Grasso, Pierre Huyghe and SUGIMOTO Hiroshi, will be shown alongside archaeological artefacts and graphic art, which aim to arouse visitors’ imagination of mysterious encounters with extra-terrestrial beings. Artists such as Patricia Piccinini, Vincent Fournier and SORAYAMA Hajime present artworks that suggest how new technology such as robotics, nanotechnology and genetic engineering, might give rise to strange new life forms somewhere within the Universe. Space Art The Universe and Art exhibition concludes with artworks designed specifically for the environment of space. The establishment of the first space programmes in the 1950s and 1960s marked a new age in the exploration of the Universe. 536 astronauts have since explored the Universe. Artists have been active within space programmes since the very beginning. Highlights of this part of the show include artworks by Arthur Woods and OSAKA Takuro, which have flown to space and exhibited in space stations. Visitors can also see works by Kitsou Dubois and Dragan Živadinov who have devised choreography and theatre for the micro-gravity of space. Another key highlight of the section is an installation by Japanese artist, NOMURA Hitoshi, titled ‘moon’ score: ISS Commander – Listening to it on Mars. Seeking inspiration from photos of the Moon’s craters taken by Japanese astronaut WAKATA Koichi, Nomura provided his own interpretation of the rhythms of the Universe through this unique musical composition. By working hand-in-hand with scientists, artists are helping to shape the way we perceive the Universe now, and in the future. The Universe and Art is part of ArtScience Museum’s ongoing Art and Science of Space season. Ahead of the opening of the exhibition, visitors can begin reflecting on humanity’s relationship with the cosmos, planets and stars through Secret Galaxies. A key component of i Light Marina Bay 2017, Secret Galaxies is a spectacular, site-specific projection mapping artwork by Singapore audiovisual collective, Syndicate. Secret Galaxies will transform the exterior of ArtScience Museum into a dynamic representation of the stars and planets above us. It will take over the museum’s iconic façade from 3 to 26 March. - Artist And Empire: (En)countering Colonial Legacies
National Gallery Singapore unveils Artist and Empire: (En)countering Colonial Legacies in first-ever collaboration with Tate Singapore, 30 September 2016 – Art and history come alive as National Gallery Singapore unveils its much-anticipated Artist and Empire exhibition at the Singtel Special Exhibition Gallery. Presented in association with London’s Tate Britain, the Singapore showcase, entitled Artist andEmpire: (En)countering Colonial Legacies, looks at art associated with the British Empire and how it has been represented and contested through time. “When we first learnt that Tate Britain was organising the Artist and Empire exhibition, we were very keen to present a version of it in Singapore. Apart from the resonance that the exhibition has to the shared colonial history which Singapore and the region had with Britain’s imperial past, it will also be a valuable counterpoint to reflect on the issues of post-colonialism and decolonisation. Unlike the London show which took on a more British-centric perspective, we took Tate Britain’s narrative as a point of departure to shift the curatorial focus and perspective to the former colonies from the Asia Pacific region, including responses to colonialism by contemporary artists,” describes Dr Eugene Tan, Director of National Gallery Singapore. Artist and Empire: (En)countering Colonial Legacies adopts a contemporary perspective to critically examine art produced in relation to the colonial experience, and the rise of modern art in former colonies in the Asia Pacific region – particularly Australia, Brunei, India, Malaysia, Myanmar and Singapore. Also included in the Singapore exhibition is a special focus on Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, a key colonial figure who is regarded as the founder of modern Singapore. The Gallery’s exhibition draws upon over 200 artworks spanning diverse regional and international public and private collections, including Singapore’s National Collection. Works range from the 16th century to the present, and feature iconic works such as Lady (Elizabeth) Butler’s 1879 oil on canvas, The Remnants of an Army (pictured top left); majestic life-sized portraits of Singapore’s key colonial figures such as Sir Stamford Raffles (pictured bottom left), Sir Frank Swettenham, Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth II; and a selection of contemporary artworks to introduce alternative perspectives on colonialism, including special commissions by Wong Hoy Cheong (MY) and Erika Tan (SG). Artworks by contemporary artists Lee Wen (SG), Tang Da Wu (SG), Andrew Gilbert (UK), the Singh Twins (UK) and Michael Cook (AU) will also be displayed. Mr Low Sze Wee, Director for Curatorial, Collections and Education, and curator of the exhibition, adds, “Artist and Empire opens up fresh perspectives on how we can view Singapore and our region’s colonial visual heritage. The Singapore show will offer visitors an opportunity to examine afresh our society today, and how we have built our sense of identity and place in relation to our (colonial) past.” The Singapore exhibition is curated by Mr Low, Ms Melinda Susanto, Assistant Curator and Ms Toffa Abdul Wahed, Curatorial Assistant. Artist and Empire: Facing Britain’s Imperial Past debuted at London’s Tate Britain in November 2015. Says Ms Caroline Collier, Director of Partnerships and Programmes at Tate, “We are delighted that National Gallery Singapore is presenting Artist and Empire. The exhibition was originally developed for Tate Britain in London. Colleagues at the Gallery have reshaped it for Singapore with new loans from British collections and other lenders, including artists. This is the first partnership between the Gallery and Tate, and we have greatly enjoyed the collaboration.” The exhibition was made possible by lead sponsor Singtel. Says Ms Chua Sock Koong, Singtel Group CEO, “We are pleased to support Artist and Empire, the second major exhibition at the Singtel Special Exhibition Gallery, in partnership with National Gallery Singapore and Tate Britain. Not only does this exhibition throw a spotlight on a significant period of history in Singapore and the region, it presents rarely-seen perspectives, particularly those of artists in Asia, who were there capturing an important period of change, in their own distinct voices. As a Singapore-grown telecoms company that now connects the most people across Southeast Asia, we are also big believers in the power of art to connect, engage and inspire. We hope visitors will enjoy this long-overdue understanding of the region’s rich history.” Artist and Empire: (En)countering Colonial Legacies runs from 6 October 2016 to 26 March 2017 at the Singtel Special Exhibition Gallery, Level 3, City Hall Wing. Admission is S$15 for Singaporeans and S$25 for non-Singaporeans. STATE OF MIND SPRING/SUMMER 2017 WOMEN’S COLLECTION Singapore, January 2017 – Clashing forces, dream cities and ancient traditions. FURLA’s S/S 2017 Women’s collection is a magnificent tribute to the journey, expressed in a harmonious line-up of varied shapes, materials and decorative details. The sky’s the limit: FURLA’s S/S 2017 Women’s collection is a journey of boundless discovery. Knowledge and curiosity, as well as a keen appraisal of the world and all that it has to offer, guide the FURLA woman in her quest for harmony. In this collection, strength and beauty appear as clashing forces which nevertheless meld and complement one another. North and south collide, as do ancient traditions and the modern city lifestyle, the artisan’s touch and technological and industrial innovation. These seemingly incongruous concepts are the inspiration underlying FURLA’s S/S 2017 Women’s collection. The uniqueness of every experience, the inner wealth that is gained through travel, the euphoric feeling of discovery, all come to life in a line-up that plays extensively with shapes and materials. This is a collection that emphasizes detailed embellishments, with a masterful use of embroidery, lace, laser-cuts, and prints on lighter-and-more-supple-than-ever leather. All of these accessories were designed to follow the wearer’s natural movement. Tassels, fringe and knots are intertwined like memories, highlighting each product’s artisan touch while also revealing the best modern leather-working techniques. The newest it-bag of FURLA’s S/S 2017 Women’s collection is the Amazzone bag. It is a shoulder strap bag designed like a portable trove for storing treasures collected on this boundless journey. First introduced in the Cruise Collection, with scalloped edges on the flap, today The bag features smooth edges, and comes in three different sizes: mini, small and medium, with practical handles in addition to the strap. In its most simple, everyday form, Amazzone comes in Ares brown leather. In its more elaborate versions, the bag is available in an animalier print (zebra and jaguar) or in a spring floral print on the Ares leather. This season, the iconic FURLA Metropolis features an array of cultural references tied to international travel, from tribal-influenced floral prints on leather to the embroidery of the Girandola line, as well asthe all-over Vergolino, which is a type of precious woven textile. There are also more practical, everyday interpretations of the Metropolis in denim and monochrome leather, and futuristic twists in the inflatable Oxygen and PVC versions of the bag. The collection also puts significant emphasis on backpacks, travel totes and reporter bags: these are accessories for people on-the-go. The tote bag dominates the line-up, from the classic, streamlined Aurora, available in an animalier version, to the new Lucky, a minimalist-chic handbag with stark, elegant lines, metal details and micro studs. The latter is available in a python print or in a two-toned colour-block version. Dafne, the handbag that turns into a backpack, is the most functional and versatile of the bunch,. It is available in oasis calfskin in neutral grays, blues and browns, or in bright fuchsia. The new Vittoria captures the collection’s contemporary flavor: it stands out for its sliding handle, which is made of Vit. Fleu Soft – an even more delicate version of the classic Vit. Fleu vegetable-tanned leather – and slips easily into the bag’s main compartment. It is available as a tote or a shoulder bag closed with a fine strap in front. Vittoria also comes with a matching clutch. Brilliant citrus colour fairly explodes on the saffiano leather of the Stacy bucket bags, which are available in a new, laser-pierced calfskin in the S/S 2017 collection. Stacy is the most joyful bag on FURLA’s journey, simple, yet also spirited and youthful in appeal. It can be personalized with new spring charms: hearts and stars decorated with fringe, as well as a range of fun travel souvenirs.
