  • Rang Mahal Launches a Brand New Menu!

Rang Mahal Reinvents Indian Cuisine with New Menu That Showcases First-of-its-kind Dishes In a fine-dining setting, savour modern homecooked, street and gourmet classics specially whipped up by the award-winning Chef Milind Sovani 2018 – Rang Mahal, the award-winning fine-dining Indian restaurant at Pan Pacific Hotel, has launched a brand-new menu! With this new menu, Rang Mahal aims to reinvent Indian cuisine by putting a modern spin on Indian classics while still honouring their heritages. Known for whipping up dishes of impeccable quality, Rang Mahal now regales dishes that are perfect for communal sharing, and will appeal to the palates of youngsters, families as well as Indian-food connoisseurs. The new menu also offers healthier, less greasy alternatives to the usual Indian fare. The menu is specially curated by the award-winning Chef Milind Sovani, who has been a chef to India’s former prime ministers Ms Indira Gandhi and Mr Rajiv Gandhi. He is also a three-time winner of the “Asian Chef of the Year” title, and has hosted numerous television shows. A brainchild of his, the innovative menu presents elements of age-old traditions that he studied while exploring various regions of India during the past five years. With the chef’s return to Singapore, he aims to share his hard-earned insights with his guests through an eclectic range of dishes. Some of the new dishes at Rang Mahal take inspiration from Ayurveda — one of the world’s oldest holistic healing systems. By using Ayuverdic herbs in the dishes, diners can enjoy its unique health benefiting properties while indulging their taste buds. Most of the herbs and spices used are imported directly from India, and they help recreate the authentic flavours and signature aromas of Indian cuisine. Embark on a journey of gastronomic excellence The very first evolution of Rang Mahal took place in 2000, spearheaded by Mrs Ritu Jhunjhnuwala, Managing Director of Rang Mahal Restaurants. She is instrumental in shaping and making the Group’s vision a reality, leading the team to move away from the traditional look and feel of Indian restaurants to one that exudes modernity and sophistication. As such, rather than following the fusion-cuisine trend, the dishes at Rang Mahal are deconstructed and then reconstructed, thus boasting a contemporary spin while still retaining the original flavours. In so doing, Rang Mahal has been changing the way gourmands in Singapore view Indian cuisine. Amongst the new dishes include Tomato Saar, Mulethi Herb Foam ($20) — a perfect starter, this light and airy take on the classic tangy tomato soup packs enough flavour and tang to whet the appetite, without being overly rich. Rang Mahal’s version is poured over a dollop of mulethi foam, which imparts a sweet tinge. The sweet liquorice root is an important herb in Ayurveda and boasts antioxidants as well as medicinal properties that help cure sore throat, cold, cough, etc. Next up is the Tandoori Fondue – An Ensemble of Kebabs ($58), a unique rendition that departs from the usual cheese and chocolate version. Rang Mahal has cleverly thought of presenting chicken kebabs in fondue style! The chicken kebabs are marinated with unique ingredients like holy basil, kasuri fenugreek, cashew cheese and Punjabi chicken tikka, allowing diners to savour different flavours at one go. Coat an assortment of chicken kebabs grilled in tandoor as well as garlic naan cubes with a luscious cheese sauce, which has a hint of tomato makhni. There is also a vegetarian option. It is ideal for sharing amongst two to four persons, and is a great dish friends can bond over. Continue the indulgence with the Roomali Masala Papad ($15) — Rang Mahal is the first in Singapore to serve this unique creation. The papad is a gigantic offering that spans the entire wok. It is topped with a potpourri of sev (lentil crispies), onion, tomato, chilli and special spice blend. Wash it down with a glass of whisky or beer. Inspired by Chinese dim sum, the exquisite Butter Chicken Bao($42) is a steamed and petite naan bao housing butter chicken. The exterior is soft and pillowy, while the inside is rich, creamy and fragrant. Following a traditional recipe from Mumbai, the Parsi Kheema Per Eeda, Maska Bao ($55) boasts a Parsi twist, andfeatures spiced minced lamb (kheema) with soft eggs and buttered (maska) buns. Or go with the Bombay Pani Poori ($25) — crispy semolina puffs served with stuffing made with moong bean sprouts, onions and chillies. Accompanying the puffs is spiced water, a blend of two types of chutney, spices and herbs that is served in shot glasses. Guests can have experiential fun with this dish, as they have to stuff the poori with moong bean sprouts, pour the spiced water into it, and then eat the entire thing in one bite. This is an explosion of flavours! Lamb lovers will be delighted to know that Rang Mahal has two must-try lamb dishes. The Lucknowi Nalli Ghosht($54) is an ambrosial dish enjoyed by the nawabs and kings of the Lucknow region in India. This classic dish uses unique fragrant spices like dried rose petals, khus ki jad, edible perfume called ittar, saffron and more. The superbly tender braised shanks are immersed in a piquant rosewater and spice curry. Equally enticing is the Dhuwandaar Lamb Chops ($42). Australian lamb rack is marinated with a special spice blend along with caramelised pineapple and ginger garlic marinade. Cooked in tandoor, the grilled lamb chops have a lovely crust. The chops are then smoked with garam masala and Applewood for a sweet overtone. A spellbinding meal with vegetarian choices Vegetarians will also be spoilt for choice here. The Tandoori Duet of White & Green Asparagus ($35) is one of Rang Mahal’s signature dishes, featuring fresh premium white and green asparagus with mustard cheese marinade. The asparaguses are lightly grilled in tandoor, and accompanied with red beetroot sauce, yellow mustard sauce and green mint sauce. Or opt for the Subz Moilee ($36), one of the most loved vegetable dishes in southern India that features an assortment of exotic vegetables, immersed in fragrant creamy, Kerala-style coconut curry. Sweeten the memories with desserts Cap off the meal with two indulgent desserts: Gulab Jamun Flambé; and Lychee Kulfi. The Gulab Jamun Flambé ($25) showcases gulab jamuns, an all-time favourite, in a unique style. Drenched in rose saffron nectar syrup, these golden dumplings are balanced with generous portions of fresh fruits, and then served flambé style with Drambuie liquor. Or go with the Lychee Kulfi ($20), a homemade traditional ice cream created with all-natural ingredients, and studded with fresh lychees. The dessert is then engulfed in smoke for a spectacular touch. Rang Mahal Gourmet Lunch Buffet Available from Sunday to Friday, is Rang Mahal’s signature Gourmet Buffet Lunch. The varied Gourmet Buffet Lunch features regional Indian favourites complete with vegetarian and non- vegetarian options, a fresh salad bar counter, a la minute pass-arounds and a full dessert line. The Gourmet Buffet Lunch is available from 12pm to 2.30pm and is priced at $58++. About Rang Mahal Since its establishment in 1971, fine dining Indian restaurant Rang Mahal has won more than its fair share of prestigious accolades. In 2009, it earned distinct and longstanding recognition with the Singapore Brand Prestige Awards 2009 – Heritage Brands award, an exemplary tribute paid only to home-grown brands with exceptional brand practices for more than 30 years. Most recently, it was the only Indian restaurant to receive The Straits Times ‘Best Asian Restaurant’, silver category in 2017. Originally housed in the now defunct Imperial Hotel, Rang Mahal’s move to a contemporary premise at Pan Pacific Hotel in 2001 followed by a refurbishment in 2007 has seen it transform in terms of ambience, quality of service and menu offerings. In tandem with Pan Pacific Hotel’s renovation programme in 2012, Rang Mahal embarked on a new chapter with a major transformation, and continues to push the boundaries of the culinary world in all aspects of a holistic dining experience. As part of the Hind Group, Rang Mahal continues to support and facilitate awareness for good causes through various corporate social responsibility initiatives. • Formula One Singapore Grand Prix (Race Day): Living the High Life

As a luxury publication, we have experienced a plethora of lavish events around Singapore. Needless to say, it is imperative for us to cover Singapore’s iconic night race from nothing less than the epitome of lifestyle experiences, Twenty3. Twenty3 is a massive 3,000 sqm facility. The grand facade was only the beginning. Housed within this luxurious space, there were three feature restaurants (Franceschetta58, Le Charlemagne & Five Lights Pavilion), four specialty bars and a dance club! Gastronomy VIPs and HNWIs had a selection of cuisines to choose from Italian, Asian or New Age. Franceschetta 58 – sister restaurant of Massimo Bottura’s three-Michelin-starred Osteria Francescana – served their signature Italian-influenced cuisine Emilia Burger, southern inspired pasta dish Mezze Maniche With Chickory, Anchovies Cream and Spicy Toasted Breadcrumbs, as well as a Venetian salt cod dish Baccalà Mantecato With Eggplant Purèe, Toasted Pistachios, Lemon Skin and Smoked Tea. We also savoured dishes prepared by Chef Laurent Peugeot of Le Charlemagne. They showcased Hokkaido scallops with takuan (pickled daikon radish), pomelo and sake yuzu, and wagyu beef pot-au-feu with daikon, pickles and ravioli. The creativity of the plating presentations and tastes were tip-top. We expected nothing less than the finest, and we were delighted with every dish served by the restaurants. Guests were naturally drawn towards the 10m long dessert bar for an additional serving of decadent desserts helmed by Australian pastry chef Andrew Bowden of Saga Patisserie. It served up unique treats such as their Glow In The Dark vanilla slice, and the “Karl” cake, which is an indulgent chocolate fudge cake adorned with salted caramel, roasted peanuts, chocolate mousse and Snickers chocolate bars. In fact, the dining experience was better than the ones we had during the Monaco Formula One Grand Prix street race. The ambience was just right; posh settings of a fine dining restaurant where a decent conversation can be held, delectable spread of food to keep the palate satisfied and the slight drone of the engine noise when the cars passed by to maintain those adrenaline levels. It’s surreal to know that you are enjoying in absolute comfort while drivers are having the time of their lives on the Singapore street track whizzing past at more than 200km/h. The best part of the experience was actually knowing that you can choose to walk out and basked fully in the F1 race atmosphere, once you are done savouring those delicacies. We highly recommend having this experience at least once in your lifetime. Party The Apex Lounge featured full-length windows facing the track, plush cushion lounge seats and a kinetic light installation that was brought in from Germany. Coupled with an endless flow of champagnes, hard liquors and wines, VIPs were all set for the high life as they grooved to the beats by guest
deejay Gil Glasenberg (DJ Gil Glaze). Track Action In the earlier part of the day, we saw Chris Van Der Drift (Kamlung Racing) take the trophy for the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia after an eventful race with many exhilarating overtakes and some disappointing retirements. From the Ferrari Challenge, we saw Renaldi Hutasoit (Ferrari Jakarta) take the checkered flag. On to the main highlight of the weekend, the actual Formula One race! Twenty3 was perfectly situated! For those who wish to take awesome pictures, this is the perfect spot. With the many viewing spots situated on the upper decks of Twenty3, you get to capture the entire row of cars during the starting lineup, glimpse of pit lane action, and witness exciting overtakes as drivers navigate the last corner during their lap. For those who wanted to enjoy the endless fountain of champagne indoors, there were multiple screens, so there was no excuse to miss the action happening on the track. For 2018, Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) was once again crowned the champion of the Singapore Night Street Circuit. We saw Hamilton take the lead throughout the race, after earning pole position during the qualifying rounds on Saturday. Although there was one safety car situation at the start of the race, Hamilton experienced a smooth uneventful run of his 61 laps, while multiple overtakes and crashes were happening behind him. Overall, the entire atmosphere from the start till the checkered flag was electrifying. Martin Garrix To close off the amazing weekend, we had none other than the wildly-popular Martin Garrix from the Netherlands. Garrix did not fail to hype up the crowd. Playing tracks such as So Far Away, Ocean and There for You. Within minutes, the scene turned ecstatic as the infectious music made it difficult for anyone to stay still. It was a scene of pure energy as the crowd sang, cheered, screamed and raised their hands to the music (or to capture pictures for their social media feeds). Garrix’s energy was infectious, as he jumped up and down to cheer the crowd every now and then. Dua Lipa also made a special appearance for their song Scared to Be Lonely. The energy from his performance carried on even after it ended as crowds made their way out of the circuit park in high spirits. With the debut of Twenty3, the experience of the 2018 Formula One Singapore Grand Prix had been nothing but spectacular. It provided the perfect balance between gastronomy, dazzling parties and breathtaking views of the race action. A wholesome feast for the senses! For those who missed out on the experience this year, be sure to get your tickets early for 2019. Check www.singaporegp.sg for updates. • Formula One Singapore Grand Prix (Day 1): Thrilling Encounters

To spot the die-hard petrolheads, you can find them spending their time watching the track or having their eyes glued to the screens broadcasting the action from the pits. For Day 1, we saw a fair bit of action during the practice sessions from Porsche Carrera Cup Asia, Ferrari Challenge and Formula One cars. Once again in Singapore, we saw Vettel make contact with the wall during his practice run. Just for today, we decided to focus our attention on the off-track experiences. Throughout the day as each practice session came to a close, crowds started to swarm towards the stages located in various zones. There was never a dull moment as entertainers, decorative displays and activities kept guests entertained and maintained a heightened sense of excitement. Car Displays Performances There was plenty to be excited about with the entertainment line-up for Day 1; Björn Again, THELIONCITYBOY, DJ JNR (of Matteblacc Collective), Ghetto Funk – Roché Apinsa & Ruben Chi (Netherlands), FLAME OZ, Sampa The Great, Bonesthemachine & Drewdollaz & Jay Chou (just to name a few). Björn Again Founded by Australian musicians John Tyrrell and Rod Stephen in 1988, Björn Again is the top ABBA tribute show and the most successful tribute band of all time. The stage lit up with their presence as they came out donned in retro costumes. As with any concert, it was all about the atmosphere, and Björn Again never failed to capture the audience with famous hits such as ‘Dancing Queen’ and ‘Mamma Mia’. Their captivating performances even got some of the older folk in the crowd dancing Bonesthemachine & Drewdollaz From the beaches of L.A. to the streets of London and Paris (and now Singapore), we saw Steven Hill “flexing”—the dance fuses traditional hip-hop movements, freestyle, and contortion. Meet Bones the Machine, who was seen putting his unique dance style on the F1 circuit map. Steven was first given the name “Bones Crusher” because they couldn’t believe that his bones could pop out out like they do. But as his dance style evolved to be more mechanical, people started calling him “Bones the Machine.” Joining him in the performance was Drewdollaz who is a Professional Dancer, Movement Artist, Bonebreaking Choreographer and Dance Instructor. Drew built a reputation for himself as a battle dancer as he began his dance career on the underground dance scene in Brooklyn. Jay Chou Jay Chou wowed the crowd gathered at the Padang with his rap songs and high energy dance moves. As the night went on, the Mandopop king also serenaded the Padang with his love ballads. His performance even featured home-grown jazz singer Joanna Dong, whom he mentored last year in the reality music show Sing! China. Day 1 ended with a concert to remember as the whole performance was superbly produced with awesome acoustics and stunning visuals. Check out the Insta-story highlights on our Instagram page (@RosetteMedia) for snapshots of Day 1. We are looking forward to bringing you more coverage on Race Day!

  • Suite Experience F1 2018 SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX

Being in the most expensive city in the world, we are familiar with the lavish lifestyle associated with the world’s only night race in Grand Prix history. Over the past decade, Singapore GP has made its mark with one of the season’s most dramatic races, a stellar entertainment line-up, and set the benchmark for unparalleled corporate hospitality. Building on this success and incorporating invaluable feedback from clients, the entire hospitality experience has been completely redesigned to cater to different tastes and needs. As a result, there are now five distinct hospitality offerings at the Marina Bay Street Circuit – the Formula One Paddock Club, Sky Suites, The Green Room, Lounge @ Turn 3 and the newly launched Twenty3. Twenty3 Situated perfectly at the last corner of the circuit (Turn 23), Twenty3 is the place to be to watch the cars neck and neck as they finish each lap, and zoom off down the straight. For the enthusiasts, we are pretty sure you can already imagine the sweet sound of those engines when the drivers accelerate hard and bash those paddle shifts. In our opinion, it is the best site to capture awesome pictures as the cars slow down to enter the pit or to tackle the last corner of the race. Prepare to deplete your phone batteries, as you stand glued at various viewing spots, in an attempt to capture the perfect picture or Insta-Story of your favourite team. Coming from a breakdancing scene, he has a real grounding in urban beats, meaning club music and associated sounds have always held an important place in his heart. When dropping sets around the world, whether to massive festival crowds or more intimate club dancers, he draws upon the worlds of funk, soul, hip hop and many more genres in order to create a real party vibe. From the pit lane to the catwalk and adding to the glamour of the adrenaline-filled Singapore Grand Prix Weekend, the nightly Fashion Circuit will take place with international models and celebrities on The Podium Lounge’s iconic catwalk. Featuring saavy, hip-hop inspired streetwear line EGO by Strawn Teague Holmes on Friday, September 14th, the launch of Cosmic Rocker Lifestyle Wear by COSMIC 108 will also be featured at The Podium Lounge this year. Armed with a macro lens, an incredible eye for detail and a truly ground breaking vision, Lisa Johnson’s guitar art, is taking the world of fine art photography on a rock’n’roll ride. Far from still life, Lisa’s work conjures the abstract, yet also possesses a very sensual and ethereal feel that intentionally illustrates the intimate wear and tear details of the instrument. MTHEMOVEMENT will be showcasing luxury designer streetwear for the jet set lifestyle. Celebrity designer “M” has over 20 years of experience in branding, fashion and graphic design internationally. Specialising in the process of design from conception, to design and development, to production and positioning. The Podium Lounge Singapore is thrilled to welcome Art Works, Singapore’s leading fine art investment gallery who will present an exhibition by British contemporary artist Lincoln Townley who is known for his expressive figurative paintings. Drawn from the artist’s subconscious, the dark and often tormented imagery of Lincoln’s work seeks to evoke the chaos bubbling just below the surface of our lives, which drive our desires to succeed and win in life. Collected by the likes of Charlie Sheen, Al Pacino and Russell Brand and affectionately known by Michael Caine and others as ‘the next Andy Warhol’. Lincoln has exhibited internationally, including The National Gallery, The Royal Academy, Somerset House, The Saatchi Gallery and The Brisbane Powerhouse. The Podium Lounge also welcomes world-famous speed painter Armin Flossdorf of F1 Arts, who will be performing live throughout the weekend. Having started off in Monaco, Armin’s first “Formula One – Fanatic Location” exhibition ten years ago, led him to specialise in Formula 1 Art using his eye-catching technique of combining acrylics and pencil on canvas. Armin has exhibited at the very highest levels of motorsport events around the world, and counts former F1 Supremo Bernie Ecclestone and FIA President Jean Todt among his collectors. Charity is always a major focus of The Podium Lounge weekend, and this year will see a series of live auctions of authenticated and exceptionally rare F1 memorabilia with all proceeds going to a local charity. Some outstanding items include a Lewis Hamilton signed race glove showcasing the multiple Formula 1 World Champion, a Niki Lauda signed and framed 8 x 12 inch photo, capturing the highly sought after signature of the 3-time Formula 1 World Champion who famously survived a fiery crash at Nürburgring in 1976 and returned to racing only 6 weeks later. • The cyborgs have arrived!

Come and meet the robots in an impressive line-up of programmes over two weekends SINGAPORE (18 May 2017) – Step into the bold new world of artificial intelligence, life-like robots and genetic modification with the arrival of HUMAN+: The Future of Our Species at ArtScience Museum from 20 May 2017. Meet the world’s first officially recognised human cyborg, Neil Harbisson, get up close and personal with the uncannily realistic humanoid robot, Nadine, and meet one of the world’s leading performance artists, Stelarc. They are all part of a cutting-edge exhibition of thought- provoking works from more than 40 international artists, scientists, technologists and designers at this exhibition. A blockbuster exhibition not to be missed, HUMAN+ seeks to ask what it means to be a human in the present and future, and examines the moral issues and ethical conflicts raised in using technology to modify ourselves. A co-production between ArtScience Museum, Science Gallery at Trinity College Dublin and Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona (CCCB), HUMAN+ imagines the future of humanity with spectacular demonstrations of the latest robotic technologies, intriguing contemporary artworks, and remarkable innovations from local institutions. A key highlight at HUMAN+ is the first public appearance of Nadine, one of the world’s most realistic female humanoid robots. Visitors will be able to interact with Nadine, a socially intelligent robot, who can recognise people she has previously met and can engage in conversations. She is living proof of what lies in the forefront of research into assistive technologies that are being developed for people with special needs in Singapore. Nadine is created by Nadia Magnenat Thalmann, Director of Institute for Media Innovation (IMI) at Nanyang Technological University. Visiting Singapore for the opening programme are two legends of art and technology. On 20 May, Neil Harbisson, best known for having an antenna implanted into his skull, will take part in the opening conference, Future Sapiens. As he was born without the ability to see colour, the antenna allows him to perceive colours via sound waves. On 27 May, ArtScience Museum will host Stelarc, a seminal performance artist from Australia, who works with his body, using prosthetics, robotics, virtual reality systems, and the internet. He is also well known for having an unnervingly realistic ear surgically grafted to his left forearm. “Our perception of what it means to be human has been transformed by science and technology. Advances in genetic engineering, biotechnology and nanotechnology that not long ago seemed purely science fiction are now real. Cyborgs, superhumans and clones are alive amongst us today. What does it mean to be human now? Should we continue to embrace modifications to our minds, bodies and daily lives, or are there boundaries we shouldn’t overstep? HUMAN+ includes some of the most important and provocative artists working today, including Oron Catts and Ionat Zurr, ORLAN, and Stelarc, who are showing alongside some of Singapore’s most brilliant minds, including Robert Zhao Renhui, Louis-Philippe Demers, and Nadia Thalmann. Our entire notion of what it means to be human, is shifting, evolving and mutating. HUMAN+ takes us on a thrilling tour of this brave new world,” said Honor Harger, Executive Director of ArtScience Museum. “Are we enhancing our bodies, are we fundamentally transforming them, or are we letting our bodies be transformed? What started as a speculative question at Science Gallery Dublin with the first run of HUMAN+, finds now a spectacular new life in the magnificent ArtScience Museum. This exhibition is our most ambitious project to date, and we are very grateful and honoured to collaborate with ArtScience Museum for this new version of HUMAN+. It will entertain, surprise and ignite conversations on the most human of questions: who are we? With this exhibition, ArtScience Museum confirms its world leading role in exploring the interrelationship between art, science, technology and culture, and it is an immense pleasure for Science Gallery to be its partner for HUMAN+,” added Andrea Bandelli, CEO, Science Gallery International. “The works on display seek to explore the evolution of humans. Presented through the expert views of surgeons, scientists, researchers, artists, designers, inventors, creative thinkers and entrepreneurs, we hope to respond to the ultimate question of our time – what is the future like for our species?” said Lynn Scarff Director, Science Gallery Dublin. “HUMAN+ is an exhibition about the evolution of our species and therefore about its future. But it is also an exhibition that considers science and technology as a factor in the evolution of the species itself. The idea is not that the species is the same as it was a million years ago and is surrounded by different things that have gradually generated in its environment, in its exterior. It is that the species is progressively becoming different based on an evolution that includes science and technology,” said Vicenç Villatoro, Director of the CCCB. Spanning four themed galleries, HUMAN+ begins by exploring what we mean by human and super-human, and asks if you could enhance your abilities, what would you change? It includes Aimee Mullins, Sophie de OIiveira Barata, Corinne Mariaud, ORLAN, Marc Owens, Lorenz Potthast, Addie Wagenknecht, Chris Woebken and Kenichi Okada, Nina Sellars, Stelarc, Neil Harbisson and Moon Ribas. The second chapter asks what happens when we live side by side with our robotic companions. It explores how emerging technologies are changing the ways we encounter family, friends, co- workers and even pets. It includes daring artworks Louis-Philippe Demers, Addie Wagenknecht, Cao Fei, S.W.A.M.P, Yves Gellie, and Heidi Kumao. Also on show is a playful and sophisticated interactive installation developed by students from Nanyang Polytechnic’s School of Interactive Design Media, called TEASE. The third chapter asks if we change the environment, will we have to change ourselves in order to adapt to it? It features intriguing speculative artworks and design prototypes by Laura Allcorn, Antony Dunne and Fiona Raby, Superflux, Liam Young, The Centre for PostNatural History, Nikolaus Geyrhalter and Singaporean artist, Robert Zhao Renhui. The exhibition ends by delving into the limits of human life. It explores whether the biotech laboratory is the art studio of the future, through compelling and controversial work from Agatha Haines, Oron Catts and Ionat Zurr, Julijonas Urbonas, Zoe Papadopoulou, Jaemin Paik, James Auger and Jimmy Loizeau. Programmes over opening weekends of HUMAN+ In conjunction with the opening of HUMAN+, visitors can participate in a series of complementary programmes over the next two weekends. These events will draw on unique insights from prominent figures in the fields of robotics, biotechnology, synthetic biology and artificial intelligence regarding the possible futures of human beings. They include Neil Harbisson, Nadia Magnenat Thalmann, Oron Catts, Agatha Haines, Louis-Philippe Demers and Stelarc. As part of the opening programme of HUMAN+, two pioneers of art and technology will come together for one afternoon of riveting presentations. Stelarc is one of the true legends of art and technology performance. Steve Dixon is President of LASALLE College of the Arts in Singapore, and a world-renowned scholar of technology in performance. The event centers around the work of Stelarc, a seminal performance artist from Australia, who works with his body. His radical performance works undertaken over three decades include 26 body suspension performances with hooks in his skin, three films of the insides of his body made by customized robot sculptures, and a series of performances using prosthetics, robotics, virtual reality systems, and the internet, where his body is moved and controlled involuntarily. His is also well known for having an unnervingly realistic ear surgically grafted to his left forearm. Three of Stelarc’s recent performance artworks are presented in HUMAN+, as well as documentation of the Extra Ear project. Free on a first- come-first- served basis, subject to capacity. Register in the lobby. HUMAN+ will run from 20 May to 15 October 2017. Tickets are available at all Marina Bay Sands box offices and website. Terms and Conditions apply.

  • The Universe and Art inspires a sense of wonder at ArtScience Museum

Commissioned artwork and prized artefacts from Asian Civilisations Museum on display SINGAPORE (30 March 2017) – Come 1 April, visitors can embark on an artistic voyage through the cosmos with ArtScience Museum’s latest exhibition, The Universe and Art. The new show weaves a rich constellation of Eastern and Western philosophies, ancient and contemporary art, and science and religion, to explore how humanity has constantly contemplated its presence in the Universe. It is jointly curated and organised by Mori Art Museum in Tokyo and ArtScience Museum. Featuring over 120 original artworks, scientific artefacts and manuscripts, this exhibition presents visions of the Universe from across the globe and through the centuries. Exhibiting alongside masterpieces from around the world, are important artefacts on loan from Singapore’s Asian Civilisations Museum, and a newly commissioned installation by British sculptor, Conrad Shawcross. The Universe and Art unfolds in four parts. It begins with a focus on historical cosmologies from around the world, including religious art from the Buddhist, Hindu and Jain traditions, on loan from Asian Civilisations Museum. The birth of astronomy as a science is charted through a remarkable collection of artefacts from east and west, including masterpieces by Copernicus, Galileo, Kepler, and Newton that are on show in Singapore for the first time. New scientific thinking on the Universe is examined in the second section of the show, in works by contemporary artists, including Björn Dahlem, Mariko Mori, Andreas Gursky, and the new commission by Conrad Shawcross. The third section of the exhibition explores the origin of life in the cosmos, through artworks by major figures, such as Pierre Huyghe, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Laurent Grasso, and Patricia Piccinini. The exhibition ends by pondering life in space, through the work of historical pioneer, Konstantin Tsiolkovsky, and contemporary artists including Arthur Woods, Kitsuo Dubois, Takuro Osaka, and Dragan Živadinov. “Humanity has always looked to art, mythology and philosophy in an attempt to fathom the Universe and its mysteries. The Universe and Art shows how these fields, when combined with the understanding generated by science, give us new insights into the cosmos. We see how the Universe has been an object of religious worship, a source of artistic and literary inspiration, and the basis of some of the most revolutionary scientific discoveries of all time. The Universe and Art is a potent confluence between the terrestrial and the celestial, the real and the fictional, the poetic and the technological. It is a place where art and science meet,” said Honor Harger, Executive Director, ArtScience Museum at Marina Bay Sands. “We are pleased to welcome visitors to The Universe and Art. We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to ArtScience Museum, Asian Civilisations Museum as well as artists for allowing us to exhibit their valuable artworks and materials. Without their unwavering support and cooperation, this exhibition would not have been possible,” said Fumio Nanjo, Director, Mori Art Museum. Key loans from Asian Civilisations Museum The Universe and Art at ArtScience Museum includes a collection of stunning artefacts on loan from Asian Civilisations Museum. These important works include religious artefacts, plus scientific manuscripts and instruments from across Asia. Religious art illustrates how the Universe was depicted in Jainism, Hinduism, Buddhism and Daoism. Astronomical texts from ancient Persia and the Arab world demonstrate an advanced comprehension of the celestial world. Scientific instruments show the innovations made by Muslim scientists a millennium ago. This is the first time that these prized artefacts are on display outside of Asian Civilisations Museum. Opening the exhibition is the Relic Stupa from India. Hailing from the 3rd or 4th Century, it is the oldest in the loan collection. A stupa is a monument built to consecrate relics of the Buddha. Ashoka the Great (r. 268 – 232 BC), who unified most of the Indian sub-continent for the first time, is said to have re-distributed the Buddha’s relics into 84,000 stupas across his empire. The spire on top symbolises the central pillar of the cosmos connecting Heaven and Earth. Another intriguing piece of artefact loan on display is the Jain Mandala. Cosmological diagrams (mandalas) were used in Jains’ rituals and meditation. A sky-clan Jina, one of 24 teachers in the Jain pantheon, sits in the center of a grid of divinities. Inscribed with mantras and seed syllables, this painting manifests higher realms of existence in Jain cosmology. An astrolabe hailing from Iran demonstrates the extraordinary innovations pioneered by scientists from the Islamic world. Astrolabes represent the rotations of three-dimensional celestial spheres in a two dimension format. The astrolabe on show in the exhibition displays features originally developed by Muslim scientists from the ninth century, including shadow squares for solving trigonometry problems and a movable straight edge used to measure the altitude of celestial objects. “The Asian Civilisations Museum is grateful and very excited to be collaborating with Mori Art Museum and ArtScience Museum on this exhibition. In juxtaposing premodern artefacts of cultural astronomy with contemporary works of art, we hope visitors will come away with an insight into how people across cultures and times have thought about the cosmos,” added Kennie Ting, Director of the Asian Civilisations Museum. Commissioned work by Conrad Shawcross The second part of the exhibition explores more recent scientific concepts. A key centrepiece is Slow Arc inside a Cube VIII by British artist, Conrad Shawcross, commissioned for the exhibition. Thanks to extraordinary advances in technology, radical new theories, and vast international science endeavours, we are now living through a golden age of discovery in astronomy. Yet despite this progress in our scientific understanding, much is still unknown. Scientists now believe that 95% of the Universe is comprised of mysterious substances and forces, called dark matter and dark energy, which defy current explanation. Known for his kinetic sculptures inspired by science, Shawcross has created an artwork that invites us to ponder these mysteries. A moving light within a metal cage projects mesmerising geometric shadows onto walls of the gallery. The artwork is inspired by the Nobel Prize winning biochemist, Dorothy Hodgkin, who developed crystal radiography. Hodgkin spoke about crystal radiography being like, “trying to work out the structure of a tree from seeing only its shadow.” This calls to mind the process of how astronomers work out the structure of invisible celestial phenomena, such as dark matter. The process of ‘gravitational lensing’, is much like crystal radiography, in that it gives astronomers a tool to detect invisible dark matter, by looking only at the gravitational effect it has on ordinary matter and light. This is ArtScience Museum’s second collaboration with Shawcross. In 2014, his artwork, Projections of a Perfect Third was featured in Da Vinci: Shaping the Future. The Universe and Art will run from 1 April to 30 July 2017. Tickets are available at all Marina Bay Sands box offices and website. Terms and Conditions apply.
