- Strongest trade attendance in Singapore Airshow’s history
Singapore Airshow 2024, Asia’s most influential aerospace and defence event, announced an unparallelled trade attendee turnout at its ninth edition that was held at the Changi Exhibition Centre from 20-23 February 2024. The record number of close to 60,000 trade attendees, a 10% increase compared to the previous high in the 2018 edition, signals a renewed optimism and recovery in the aerospace landscape in the Asia Pacific region that is forecasted to account for over 45% of the new aircraft deliveries between 2023 and 2042. Since its inception in 2008, Singapore Airshow has served as a platform that fosters collaboration and helps chart a transformative course for the aerospace and defence industry. Each edition welcomes industry leaders, government officials, and military delegations who converge at the Changi Exhibition Centre to network and exchange ideas. “We are delighted to announce this overwhelming response for this edition; it clearly signals a renewed optimism and momentum driving the sector forward. It certainly reaffirms Singapore Airshow’s role as a catalytic platform for industry sector professionals worldwide in the global arena to convene and draw up tomorrow’s agenda,” said Mr Leck Chet Lam, Managing Director, Experia, organiser of Singapore Airshow. AeroForum, Singapore Airshow’s thought-leadership forum, which hosted the largest volume of strategic conversations across nine panel discussions that presented 36 panel speakers and 10 moderators, was attended by close to 600 trade attendees. Organised in collaboration with five esteemed industry partners – Alton Aviation Consultancy, Association of Aerospace Industries (Singapore), Chinese Society of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Flight Global and McKinsey & Company – a wide range of topics spanning aviation leadership, sustainable aviation, advanced air mobility and China-Singapore bilateral aviation were discussed. As a key platform for meetings and collaborations, Singapore Airshow also saw several major announcements made during the four trade days, including several focused on meeting decarbonisation targets. Airbus showcased its commitment to carbon neutrality by 2050, advocating for accelerated progress in sustainable aviation fuel production and unveiling plans in an agreement with TotalEnergies, which will supply Airbus with SAF (sustainable aviation fuel) for more than half of its needs in Europe. Airbus also announced plans for a hydrogen-powered aircraft slated for operational debut by 2035. Singapore's proposal to introduce a levy to support sustainable aviation fuel sparked extensive discussion, reflecting the industry's determination to meet its 2050 net-zero emission goal. Boeing outlined its plans for autonomous flights by 2030, while Embraer announced a strategic partnership with Scoot, making the airline the first in the Asia Pacific to adopt Embraer's Collaborative Inventory Planning solution, a tailored expendable spare parts management programme that “optimises” inventory levels for customers to reduce operational costs. Several Asia-based airlines also placed aircraft orders - Starlux Airlines placed an order for five Airbus A350 freighters and three A330neo widebody passenger jets to support its fleet expansion. In addition, Vietjet Air signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Airbus to purchase 20 A330-900 widebodies. The international debut of China's ARJ21 and C919 jet by Commercial Aircraft Corp of China (COMAC) garnered significant attention, with Tibet Airlines signing a 50- plane deal. Thai Airways and Royal Brunei Airlines also announced orders for 45 and four Boeing 787 Dreamliners respectively. Return of Weekend@Airshow Singapore Airshow 2024 will welcome the public with Weekend@Airshow (formerly known as Public Days) on 24 and 25 February 2024, where an estimated 60,000 visitors are expected at the Changi Exhibition Centre for enthralling flying displays, static displays and a host of family friendly programmes. Weekend@Airshow visitors will get to enjoy aviation wonders firsthand, including the high-speed precision manoeuvres by aerobatic flying teams, and check out static displays of the latest civil and military aircraft. The public is also able to meet and greet with Singapore Airshow’s Mascots, Leo and Leonette as well as a variety of Cosplayers, and enjoy music performed by Pacific Air Forces Band from the United States. Activities planned for kids also include airplane- making with recycled cardboard, photo-booth, temporary tattoos etc. Flying Display timings The flying displays during Weekend@Airshow (formerly known as Public Days) will be held twice a day at 11:30am and 2:30pm on 24 and 25 February. Members of the public can also view the flying displays via a livestream at Singapore Airshow 2024 (singaporeairshowlive.gov.sg), and meet and get autographs of flying display pilots on 24 February at 1:30pm – 2:00pm (Black Eagles) and 4:30pm – 5:00pm (Roulettes), and 25 February at 10:30am – 11:00am (Black Eagles), 1:30pm – 2:00pm (Jupiter) and 4:30 – 5:00pm (Sarang). - Piatti d'Amore : The Cliff @ Sofitel Singapore Sentosa Resort & Spa
We had an unforgettable culinary experience, nicely termed the "Piatti d'Amore" which is the first in a series of monthly specials that Chef de Cuisine Paolo Benedet is introducing at the Cliff, a wonderful Italian restaurant at Sofitel Singapore Sentosa Resort & Spa. We arrived one lovely evening at The Cliff in Sentosa, nicely tucked away next to Sentosa Golf Club with a beautiful sunset view of the Sentosa skyline to partake of this fantastic new Menu at this immaculate Sofitel Singapore resort. As part of their February Dining Specials, and only available only in the month of February 2024, the Piatti d'Amore and Vino Questa - Sip and Savour the Italian Flair, shall be presented where diners get to taste a four-course set menu that is available during lunch and dinner. Priced at $118++ per adult, it comprises an antipasto, a pasta, a choice of fish or beef for the main course and a dessert. Diners have the option to add on a flight of four wines to their dinner at an additional $60++ nicely phrased as the Vino Questa, to accompany their lunch or dinner. Piatti d'Amore The essence of this menu is based on the homely feel and mama's cooking inherent in Chef's training and home cuisine, where traditional ingredients and cooking style are omnipresent, especially in the concoction of his Fish-based main course, the MERLUZZO ALL’ACQUA PAZZA. The Cliff believes in the fine art of sustainability so all the ingredients, vegetables, produce are all sourced from responsible sources, truly farm to table.. and we can attest to these wondrous delights in the menu that was clearly showcased to us! For Antipasto, we had the TRIO ANTIPASTI, where a spectacular melangé of Scallop Carpaccio (this just melted in the mouth, extraordinaire!), Calamari (from Italy) with Garlic Aioli (nicely done), and 24-Month Aged Parma Ham and Burrata was paired with our Aperitif - the BOTTER PROSECCO DOC ITALY, which was nice, smooth and absolutely fresh, a pale light colour, notes of peach, green apple, lilac and lemon with well balanced acidity. When the Pasta dish arrived, phrased the SPAGHETTI AI RICCI DI MARE, I was quite amazed that a Sea Urchin Emulsion was juxtaposed with a selection of fresh Crab Meat (from sustainable sources) with the spaghetti - I like the fact that it was not heavy as the portioning was decent and light, so I can last through the duration of my course dinner. The Bianco or White Wine il SOAVE Classico Montreso, was well paired and smooth and a true accompaniment to the Spaghetti; a bright yellow with aromas of hawthorn and acacia, grapefuit along slight minerality, blossomy somewhat at the finish, fresh on the palate with a lasting persistence. The Main dish of MERLUZZO ALL’ACQUA PAZZA was very special to me, as it was solvent and nicely cooked in a juicy stew format, a delightful broth, almost oriental but in this case, Italian of course with loads of cherry presence; the Sustainably Farmed Sea Bass was nicely tossed and tender and went well with the Light Saffron, Cherry Tomato Broth and Fresh Parsley - Delicious! We also managed to sample the TAGLIATA DI MANZO. a nicely prepared Grilled Australian Beef Striploin sprinkled with Forest Mushrooms and presented with Natural Jus Reduction, just nice, not too much and overbearing! - Swag! The Rosso or Red Wine OMINA ROMANA DIANA NEMORENSES ITALY 2013 had dominant Merlot presence with Sangiovese and Cabernet Savignon; a deep ruby color and aromas of ripe red fruit and vanilla, full-bodied and strong red rich colour, with flavors of black cherry, mint, blackcurrant and tobacco. The tannins are firm but I feel it needs more aeration to allow for it's full character to blossom. For dessert, it was truly stunning and tasty, what a fantastic PANNA COTTA AL CIOCCOLATO BIANCO E BASILICO; I seldom take Panna Cotta but this one truly wonderful, not too creamy, with a tender texture when introduced, and certainly not too sweet, Chef did a great job to create this dish, Kudos! The dessert wine Dolce presented was the BAVA MOSCATO D’ASTI DOCG PIEDMONT ITALY 2021 - it was aromatic, intense but not super sweet, good characteristics of acidity and balanced with elegance and fragrace, pleasantly paired with the Panna Cotta Vino Questa: Sip and Savour the Italian Flair These were the bottles showcased that were consistent with the Italian Flair! Aperitif BOTTER PROSECCO DOC ITALY Bianco PRODUTTORI DI MANDURIA VERDECA ALICE IGT 2022 (a change was given at our dinner - il SOAVE Classico Montreso) Rosso OMINA ROMANA DIANA NEMORENSES ITALY 2013 Dolce BAVA MOSCATO D’ASTI DOCG PIEDMONT ITALY 2021 The special monthly menus are not only a way to showcase Chef Paolo's culinary talent, but also a chance for him to highlight seasonal produce, which is a prime distinction of his culinary cooking style. March 2024 Season As Black Winter Truffles are now in season, the next special menu that will be available from 5 to 31 March 2024 will features this special ingredient. Priced at $128++ per person, the four-course menu will have beef tartare with black truffle shavings, a choice of pasta or risotto with truffle, cod or slow-cooked beef cheek with black truffle, and even truffle ice cream, so do lookout for this for the month of March 2024 at the Cliff as well.. Details Piatti d'Amore Indulge in a trio of antipasti, followed by spaghetti in a sea urchin emulsion, a choice of sea bass or beef striploin, and a panna cotta dessert. 5 TO 29 FEBRUARY 2024 | 12 PM TO 3PM, 6PM TO 10PM S$118* PER DINER Vino Questa: Sip and Savour the Italian Flair 1 TO 29 FEBRUARY 2024 | 12 PM TO 3PM, 6PM TO 10PM S$60* PER DINER Elevate your dining experience at The Cliff with a curated selection of four Italian wines including: Produttori Di Manduria Verdeca Alice IGT 2022 and Omina Romana Diana Nemorenses Italy 2013. - Singapore Airshow 2024
Singapore Airshow 2024, held at the Changi Exhibition Centre from 20 to 25 February, will see a total of eight aerial displays including one flypast from six air forces and two commercial companies. This edition’s aerial performances present the largest number of foreign flying teams with Indian Air Force’s Sarang showcasing its aerobatic manoeuvres at Singapore Airshow for the first time. Easy Check-in and Airport Check-In - Departure Process I was able to check in quickly and there was no queue at Terminal 2 at Changi International Airport. Online check-in gave me the flexibility to obtain my online boarding pass in just a few steps and I was able to book, confirm and check-in for my flight on swiss.com via automated check-in. Love it! SWISS Economy cabin interior Every seat in Economy Class has its own screen on long-haul flights. A generous seat pitch and adjustable neck cushions ensured that I had a comfortable flight. A holder for drinks and one for my smartphone are new additions to the seat, which I also detected once on-board. Entertainment on Demand I have an entire bevy of choices and can choose from more than 200 films and 250 TV programmes. Pure mineral water − SWISS Altitude 1150 With the introduction of SWISS Saveurs, you receive a complimentary bottle of refreshing mineral water on board every flight with SWISS. The alpine water from the Glarus region is produced exclusively for SWISS and comes in a distinctive design. SWISS offers you a bottle of its pure Swiss water, whether you’re travelling with SWISS to Vienna, Amsterdam, London or Madrid, because your wellbeing matters to SWISS. Even if you aren’t feeling hungry, it’s important to drink plenty of liquids when travelling. By the way, the name refers to the elevation of the Alpine spring where the water is sourced in the picturesque Glarus Alps: Altitude 1150. They thus combine two elements: the source of the spring and aviation. AeroShark - inspired by Shark Skin As of 14 October 2022, SWISS became the first airline in the world to deploy the innovative AeroSHARK technology on its passenger services. The transparent AeroSHARK film which has been applied to its aircraft’s fuselage and engine nacelles replicates the hydrodynamic skin of a shark to reduce aerodynamic drag and, as a result, lower both inflight fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions. All twelve of their Boeing 777-300ER aircraft will successively have the innovative riblet film, which has been co-developed by Lufthansa Technik and chemicals and coatings manufacturer BASF, applied to their fuselage and engine nacelles. The resulting significant reduction in aerodynamic drag will make their fleet more than one per cent more fuel-efficient, and this in turn will substantially further reduce our carbon dioxide emissions. The AeroSHARK film features millions of ‘riblets’ – small protrusions just 50 micrometres high – which replicate the highly hydrodynamic skin of sharks, and thus reduces an aircraft’s aerodynamic drag wherever it is applied. Annual CO2 emission savings of up to 15,200 tonnes By applying a total of 950 square metres of AeroSHARK riblet film to the fuselage and engine nacelle surfaces of a Boeing 777, fuel savings of some 1.1 per cent can be achieved. This will reduce their annual fuel consumption by over 4,800 tonnes and the total annual carbon dioxide emissions of their Boeing 777 fleet by up to 15,200 tonnes – the amount emitted respectively by some 87 long-haul flights from Zurich to Mumbai. “Reducing its environmental footprint is one of the greatest challenges ahead for the aviation sector, and being carbon-neutral in our flying by 2050 is a key SWISS strategic objective,” says CEO Dieter Vranckx. “We put a major emphasis at SWISS on actively promoting and making targeted investments in new technologies. And we’re delighted that, in becoming the world’s first passenger airline to use the innovative AeroSHARK technology, as we’ll be doing with our Boeing 777 fleet, we’ll now be making a further substantial contribution to ensuring more sustainable travel. We will successively install the new AeroSHARK riblet film on our Boeing 777 fleet from mid-2022 onwards. The work will be performed when each aircraft’s downtimes permit." Carbon-neutral by 2050 The adoption of the new AeroSHARK technology is a key initiative in their broader endeavours to minimize their carbon dioxide emissions. It also underlines their commitment to promoting the use of innovative technologies. They have set themselves the objectives of halving their net CO2 emissions from their 2019 levels by 2030 and of making their business and operations carbon-neutral by 2050. AeroSHARK is just one of the ways SWISS is striving to reduce its carbon dioxide emissions and make air travel more sustainable. Its further actions here include investing in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), which is manufactured from biogenic waste and presently produces some 80 per cent less carbon dioxide than conventional kerosene. SWISS already uses SAF, and is promoting and supporting further research and trials in the field together with the Lufthansa Group. The 252 guest rooms and suites are warm and bright, each one brimming with modern amenities, spacious workspaces and floor-to-ceiling windows. Any stay at one of their Club Deluxe or Club One Bedroom Suites also includes many exclusive benefits across the hotel such as complimentary evening cocktails and meeting room use. We had the pleasure to experience a stay in a Club Deluxe Room recently. The check in process was seamless and the front desk staff were impeccably polite and courteous. We were greeted and checked in by Wawa the front desk duty person. Amari KL is a member of the Onyx Rewards Loyalty Programme. A recently opened brand new 5 star hotel, the lobby is spacious, classy and exudes a tranquil feeling of calm and elegance. We were escorted to our room by Zarina the Guest Relations Manager. She was very polite, courteous and friendly. The Club Deluxe room is a huge 33-35 sqm space that has a King sized bed and a sofa bed, which can sleep 3 adults or 2 adults and 1 child. All minibar items are complimentary. Club benefits include 2 hours complimentary usage of a meeting room3 pieces of laundry or pressing per day, access to the Club Lounge and complimentary buffet breakfast at Amaya Food Gallery. After settling into the room, we decided to head to the Club Lounge for evening cocktails. The Club Lounge is actually the Cascade Lounge on the Ground floor, next to the reception. A bright, airy, naturally lit cafe and lounge at the lobby area that doubles up as a Club Lounge. How ingenious and creative use of space! The evening cocktail menu with a nice selection of house wines, beer, cocktails, juices and non-alcoholic drinks. The house wine selection. The canapes spread - huge variety and filling enough for dinner. No stay in a hotel is complete without an F&B experience at its F&B outlets, so we decided to head to Amaya Bar on Level 1 for dinner. Amaya Bar is the outdoor chillax area of the Amaya Food Gallery on Level 1. The outdoor alfresco chillout area. Our uber cool and friendly bartender concocting some cocktails for us. Overall the dinner experience was nothing short of extraordinary. The cocktails were superb and the food was immaculate. We thank Subra the F&B Director for taking good care of us. We must commend Subra for being one of the most involved and hands-on F&B Directors we have met, someone who walks the talk and leads by example. We observed him personally clearing dishes from tables. After a good night's sleep, we were back at Amaya Food Gallery for their legendary breakfast. Subra shared Amaya has one of the widest spreads and best breakfasts in KL and he was true to his word. Indian, Malay, Chinese, Western, Fusion, Continental - Amaya has got them all. A smorgasbord of different cosmopolitan styles Malaysia has to offer. This has to be one of the most amazing buffet breakfast spreads we have experienced in a long time. Hotel Facilities From its rooftop location, overlook the city while you swim a few laps in the morning or settle down for the afternoon with finger food and oversized loungers. 20 metres in length, the salt water pool is even suited for those who are more passionate about swimming. There is also a 24 hour well equipped FIT gym offering the best in holistic and traditional fitness equipment designed to take care of your physical fitness and workout needs. Well-equipped, the gym has various types of cardio machines, mind and body equipment and a full rack of free weights. Summary: A great and enjoyable stay at a 5 star property in the heart of the city. Focus Art Fund recognises iconic works of contemporary Southeast Asian art by facilitating their entry into the Singapore Art Museum (SAM)'s collection. With the sponsored fund, outstanding work(s) presented at S.E.A. Focus will be chosen by a selection panel to be acquired for the collection. On 19 January 2024, S.E.A. Focus has unveiled its selection of Southeast Asian contemporary artworks that will be added to the Singapore Art Museum (SAM)’s collection through the SAM S.E.A. Focus Art Fund. The selected artworks from S.E.A. Focus 2024 are depicted with these 3 artistes : Artist: Nawin Nuthong (b. 1993, Thailand) Year: 2023 Medium: Single channel video, silent 1:12 min, 2160 x 3840 pixel, Edition of 1 + 1 AP Representing gallery: BANGKOK CITYCITY GALLERY Artist statement: Far far away from the capital, in the forest, a group of kindergartners explores with a magnifying glass. They discover that leaves resemble multi-floor structures with many rooms. The children stack magnifying glasses for a closer look, observing funny characters rehearsing in loops with various gestures. One kid wonders if they get tired, while another suggests they might be practising for something. Another child thinks they must be waiting. One kid notes that waiting doesn't last forever. They all continue murmuring... In “2 seconds before revolution in a leaf” (2023), Nawin Nuthong explores the connections between history and cultural media, examining technology's role in reshaping the learning and understanding of history. Using Aseprite as his main tool, he creates pixel animations that investigate the 'Spectrum of Light Glittering on a Wet Leaf.’ Artist: Phi Phi Oanh (b. 1979, USA) Year: 2023 Medium: Sơn ta (Vietnamese natural lacquer) with gold, silver, aluminium metals and stone pigments on wood Dimensions: 30.5 x 22.2 x 1 cm (each) 10.5 x 10.5 x 7 (separate mount) Representing gallery: FOST Gallery Artist statement: This series of lacquer paintings is about life observed behind glass. Representing terrarium jars, paludariums, aquariums, or mossariums, The Vivarium series are still life paintings that depict entire habitats and micro landscapes within a glass enclosure. These paintings attempt to hold still and record, in lacquer form, our relationship to the earth and our will towards the domestication and objectification of nature around us. The works are conceived as vestiges of this epoch currently hanging in delicate balance and as iconography of its human-centred gaze. At the same time what is represented, these small pockets of life are but a mere simulation made obvious of our own ecosystem whose atmosphere, like fragile glass, is our only protection against the empty wide universe. In terms of the medium, here I have tried to explore a type of realism in son ta (Vietnamese lacquer) painting based on repeated direct observation over many days and layers then sanding away, like erosion – a journey simply reflects the passage of time, as well as fossilises and preserves these mental and visceral processes. This continuous material accumulation and subtraction leads to an image of the observed that seems to exist at different moments and times. While not tonally realistic like a photograph, this lacquer realism is more involved with the slippery ever changing experience of sight and of memory which I consider to be son ta’s major potential contribution to the field of painting. Artist’s quote: Receiving this recognition from the SAM S.E.A. Focus Art Fund is very special to me as it commemorates my relationship with Singapore. This relationship began with my participation in the 2013 Singapore Biennale where one of my first works, Specula, was exhibited. Since then, it has remained an idyll both at the level of public institutions, Singapore Art Museum, National Gallery Singapore and NTU-Contemporary Centre for the Arts as well as with the FOST Gallery that represents my work. I am very grateful for their support and collaboration these years, as well as to the Singaporean public from whom I have always received expressions of appreciation for my work. I will always be delighted to present new work to the Singapore public and hope to continue to make new and engaging works in Vietnamese lacquer. Artist: Saroot Supasuthivech (b. 1991, Thailand) Year: 2022 Medium: Two-channel video installation, 4K, 13:50-22:40 min, Edition of 3 + 2 APs Resin and marble sculpture, 50 x 25 x 8 cm, Edition of 3 + 2 APs Representing gallery: Nova Contemporary Artist statement: Saroot Supasuthivech presents works from his “River Kwai'' series, reconstructing a memorial for the labourers and prisoners of war who died building the Burma Railway in World War II. Joining segments of four languages, he looks into various monuments and rituals of remembrance, commemorating the multitude of sacrificed lives. He analyses and questions the performative futility of built memorials and contemporary commemorations, examining the institutional refusal to confront death. Yet, Supasuthivech moves beyond the tangible, ultimately reimagining loss as a unifying spiritual reality, creating a healing call for truth and unity. The Yenn and Alan Lo Foundation committed a seed amount of USD25,000 per edition for the SAM S.E.A Focus Art Fund from 2023 to 2025. For this edition, the artworks were selected by a panel of jury comprising Guest Juror, Ms Mami Kataoka (Director, Mori Art Museum), Dr Eugene Tan (Director, Singapore Art Museum), and Ms Ong Puay Khim (Deputy Director, Collections and Public Art, Singapore Art Museum). - La Veste
Couture: Alliance Française de Singapour Showcases the Artistic and Nuanced History of French Designer Jackets Journey Through the Evolution of Men's Fashion, Unveiling the Cultural Significance of Every Stitch Educational and cultural organisation, Alliance Française de Singapour presents "La Veste," a sophisticated exhibition – and part of the French Excellence programme, Couture – showcasing the artistry of the male blazer by renowned France-based andinspired fashion houses such as Balmain, Louis Vuitton, Dior, Givenchy, Yves Saint Laurent and more. Running from 17 January to 16 March 2024, this exhibition of law professor and fashion photographer David Tan’s collection, curated by Singapore’s renowned international fashion consultant Leonard Choo, offers a captivating exploration into the evolution of masculine fashion throughout French history. Curated under the discerning eye of Choo, Director of Industry Development at the Singapore Fashion Council, the exhibition features 42 meticulously selected men's blazers from Tan’s private trove. The curation on exhibit delves into the nuanced influence of masculinity on French culture, from the conception of beauty to the craftsmanship of garments. La Veste serves as a contemplative journey into the enduring allure of the men's suit, shedding light on its pivotal role in defining and redefining style, status, and self-expression as well as sparking the question of “Is this fashionable menswear a mere sensuous distraction, or does it hold deeper cultural significance?”. Fabian Forni, Executive Director of Alliance Française de Singapour, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "As we unveil La Veste, an exhibition that delves into the intricate artistry of French-designed jackets, we encourage everyone to discover the cultural tapestry woven through these fashion pieces—a narrative that goes beyond style, encapsulating the innovation, craftsmanship, and timeless elegance that defines the essence of La Veste. As the saying goes, ‘Tell me what you wear, and I’ll tell you who you are!’ This sentiment resonates under La Veste, where each jacket tells a unique story” Organised into four thematic sections—Military, Ornamentation & Decoration, Art and Deconstruction/Reconstruction—the jackets, or "vestes" in French, are grouped to guide visitors on a fashion journey through these various inspirations. The concept driving the exhibition revolves around the inherent rigidity in the design of men's jackets. In contrast to the creative freedom common in women's clothing, the blazer adheres to a universal template with lapels, sleeves, button-front, and structured shoulders. La Veste explores how tradition has evolved and been challenged, rejected, or reinterpreted through the creative use of prints, fabrics, deconstructive techniques, embroidery, and embellishments by France-based and inspired designers and fashion brands. Visitors will journey through time as they immerse in the exhibition, which demonstrates the impact of the French Revolution on the evolution of men's fashion. From the visual cues of aristocratic opulence in the 18th century, to the emergence of simpler forms of dress that embodied egalitarianism, the collection showcases how clothing design reflects societal shifts. The muted tones of the Industrial Revolution were carried into the 20th century. These styles and colours were further defined by World War I and World War II to incorporate new modern military values of order, utility, and moderation. One notable piece to look out for is Claude Montana’s 1993 Black military wool jacket, a standout piece from David's 90s collection that encapsulates the essence of military influences. It was not until the 1960s that counter-culture movements liberated menswear. Bright colours, bold patterns, and frayed edges, unconventional silhouettes became symbols of protest and self- expression, paving the way for contemporary designers to explore diverse styles. La Veste encapsulates this transformative history, illustrating the dynamic interplay between societal change and personal expression through fashion. Some notable figures in Singapore, including artists like Ayden Sng and Allan Wu, badminton world champion Loh Kean Yew, and visual artist Faris Nakamura, have been involved in promoting the exhibition. Their participation adds an extra layer of excitement to the event, complementing the captivating display of David Tan's collection. In addition to the La Veste exhibition, Alliance Française de Singapour will be hosting a dynamic array of activities as part of the Couture Programme, marking the thirteenth edition of their esteemed French Excellence initiative. Encouraging guests to delve into the cultural essence of French men's fashion, the event will feature an engaging lineup of film screenings and workshops. Among the highlights are an extensive series of film screenings, including "Papicha" by Mounia Meddour; set in 1990s Algiers, the film portrays Nedjima's courageous fashion show amidst political turmoil. "Dior and I" by Frédéric Tcheng provides an insider's look at Christian Dior, revealing Raf Simons' debut haute couture collection, while Anne Fontaine's "Coco before Chanel" captures Coco Chanel's journey to fashion world, alongside other captivating screenings. Complementing the cinematic experiences are four beginner-friendly workshops, scheduled for Saturday, 27 January 2024, and 24 February 2024, at the Singapore Fashion Council. Participants are invited to bring their own jackets and customise them based on the thematic inspirations explored in the exhibition. Through these workshops, participants will uncover the endless possibilities of fashion, transforming their jackets into unique works of craft and art. Alliance Française de Singapour extends its heartfelt gratitude to its partners: Crédit Agricole, Perrier, Vittel and Singapore Fashion Council.
