- Glisten by Lisa Reihana @ National Gallery Singapore
GLISTEN by Lisa Reihana bedazzles with art activated by nature at National Gallery Singapore’s Ng Teng Fong Roof Garden Leading Aotearoa New Zealander contemporary artist Lisa Reihana makes her Southeast Asia solo debut with GLISTEN, a large-scale kinetic sculpture that playfully responds to the surrounding environment, with shapes, sounds, colour and form to define the overall scape of this beautiful installation. One will certainly get bedazzled by the shimmers and soundscape of Aotearoa New Zealander contemporary artist Lisa Reihana’s GLISTEN, a striking kinetic large-scale outdoor installation, adorned with isosceles and triangular and hexa-patterns inspired by the rich traditions of Southeast Asian Songket and Māori Tāniko weaving. National Gallery Singapore presents Reihana’s first solo presentation in Southeast Asia for the seventh edition of the Gallery’s annual Ng Teng Fong Roof Garden Commission Series. GLISTEN presents a vibrant tapestry with intricate patterns that pay homage to the traditions and craft of Indigenous women weavers from Māori and Southeast Asian cultures, with the intertwining of art and nature. The three-sided sculpture reacts and responds playfully to its surrounding natural environment. With over 114,000 shimmer discs beautifully reflecting light, and with the accompanying soundscape of a wind chime and the fluttering pieces of these shimmer discs (when it gets windy), GLISTEN orchestrates a multi-sensory encounter with the artwork. Visitors of all ages are welcome to experience the celebratory and joyful nature of the artwork, inspiring a deeper appreciation of the respective cultures, while prompting them to explore the connections between Southeast Asia and Aotearoa New Zealand which have existed since pre-colonial times. Lisa Reihana (Ngā Puhi, Ngāti Hine, Ngāi Tūteauru, Ngāi Tūpoto; b. 1964, Aotearoa New Zealand) is a multi-disciplinary artist whose diverse practice spans film, sculpture, costume, and body adornment, text and photography. Being a woman of Māori and Welsh-English descent, Reihana has endeavoured to expand representations of Pacific and Māori identities, knowledge, and culture, significantly influencing the development of contemporary art and Māori art in Aotearoa New Zealand. Drawing from her longstanding research into Māori ancestral knowledge, materials, and costumes, Reihana also extended her research into Songket weaving for this unique commission. Reihana dives into the pre-colonial connections between the regions through the incorporation of Tāniko weaving from Aotearoa New Zealand, and Malaysian Songket motifs which are found mostly in Kelantan and Terengganu. The artwork honours the traditions, labour, and pivotal roles of Songket and Tāniko’s women weavers as makers, communicators, knowledge bearers, and mediators prior to Asia and Pacific regions’ first contact with Western culture. GLISTEN points toward the plurality of feminisms that existed in pre-colonial societies and continue to persist in Asia and Pacific regions where women provided sustenance not just for their immediate family, but for their community. GLISTEN beckons visitors with a uniquely mesmerising experience that celebrates cultures as it responds to the surrounding natural environment. The interpretation and innovative creation of the Tāniko and Malaysian Songket woven motifs by Reihana were plotted digitally in a precise manner where 114,000 shimmer discs were meticulously placed by hand to bring the patterns to life. The wind chime was handmade by collaborator Gary Hunt and the artist from repurposed materials. The shimmer discs allude to LED technology, pixels in digital images and screens, which points to Reihana’s video works and her New Media practice. Tāniko is a traditional Māori style of finger weaving. Tāniko patterns are often woven around the borders of korowai (cloaks) and relay Māori stories, histories, and values. Māori weavers’ designs consisted of triangles, diamonds, diagonal bars and stepped patterns. These designs were usually worked in black, red, and white. The featured patterns include the pâtikitiki and kaokao patterns. The pâtikitiki pattern is usually represented as a repetitive diamond or geometric pattern. Pâtikitiki is the word for flounder, symbolising abundance, hospitality and providing for your people. The kaokao pattern refers to protection and resembles a repetitive 'M' shape and is said to represent the rib cage and arms of warriors (haka stance). Songket is a textile handwoven in silk or cotton and patterned with gold or silver threads, and Lisa Reihana looked into Malaysian Songket weave patterns for GLISTEN, referencing materials such as Malaysian artist Grace Selvanayagam’s book, Songket: Malaysia’s Woven Treasure. Songket is traditionally worn during ceremonial occasions including weddings and religious ceremonies where the colour and grandeur of Songket adds to the occasion, and in the early centuries, Songket was only worn by Malay royalty. The motifs featured in the patterns include the Pucuk Rebung Gigi Yu which fuses the Rebung (bamboo shoot) and shark motifs, the Teratai (lotus) which is associated with Malay culture and religions, and the mangosteen which symbolises the reflection of one’s feelings or one’s inner self as related to human spiritual state (Dawa, 1997). Lisa Reihana says, “It’s a privilege to work with National Gallery Singapore, a leading institution for Southeast Asian art and art history. Our shared focus is on deepening the understanding and expanding the representation of extraordinary textiles from both our regions. The patterns adorning GLISTEN are inspired by women weavers, I honour their stories and intricate skills. I hope visitors will be dazzled by its beauty, and to join me in celebrating the enduring legacy of Songket and Tāniko weaving.” Qinyi Lim, Curator at National Gallery Singapore, says, “It has been a pleasure working with Lisa Reihana and her collaborator, James Pinker, to present GLISTEN for this year’s Ng Teng Fong Roof Garden Commission. At the Gallery, we strive to connect Southeast Asian art with broader global narratives, fostering a deeper understanding of Southeast Asia’s heritage amidst current and prescient concerns. GLISTEN beautifully embodies this mission by providing an avenue for visitors to explore the old and new exchanges on gendered labour and traditions between Southeast Asia, Aotearoa New Zealand and further.” The Ng Teng Fong Roof Garden Commission series invites one leading artist each year to present site-specific works at the Gallery. Previous commissioned artists include Cao Fei, Sir Antony Gormley, Shilpa Gupta, Rirkrit Tiravanija and Danh Võ. The Ng Teng Fong Roof Garden Commission is made possible through a generous gift by Far East Organization. GLISTEN by Lisa Reihana will be on display at the Ng Teng Fong Roof Garden Gallery, Level 5, City Hall Wing at National Gallery Singapore from 14 June 2024 to 30 March 2025. Admission is free. - Starward Whisky
STARWARD TAKES WHISKY TO NEW HORIZONS WITH BOLD NEW PACKAGING When David Vitale founded Starward Whisky in 2007, he set out to create an outrageously delicious and distinctly Australian whisky, to offer to the world with pride. Taking whisky out of its comfort zone is where their team feels most comfortable. And it’s how they started out - using barrels from the famed Australian wine regions in their backyard to craft something that is all about flavour. Over the last 16 years, we’ve grown our signature range, continued to push boundaries with new limited releases, and expanded into global markets like Europe and USA. And they are not done yet… Passionate about showcasing their whisky, they have created new packaging that is modern, impactful, and groundbreaking in the whisky category. They have also taken steps forward in sustainability, making conscious decisions on all packaging elements and looking for new ways to reduce their impact on the environment. Their whisky is born out of red wine barrels, which is their USP and so is the design for their new label. Inspired by the wine-soaked staves, the starburst lines of their new label represent looking into a wine barrel that they use to mature their whisky. The label design communicates the unique story, and flavour, of each of their whiskies. “When I founded Starward, I had big ambitions for what this brand could be. I’m excited to unveil our brand-new look that brings to life everything we stand for – modern, innovative, and delicious,” said David Vitale. Their aim was to grab consumers’ attention, showcasing a new bottle, evolved wordmark, clear tasting notes, storytelling through unique illustrations, and vibrant eye-catching design. They wanted to engage and recruit the next generation of curious drinkers by communicating the delicious flavours of their award-winning whiskies and inviting them on a journey, to take whisky somewhere new. Beyond creating an outrageously delicious whisky, one of their core brand and organisational values is care. They have care for their people, their community, and their planet. When working on this project, they wanted to ensure any changes they made also had a positive environmental impact. That is why they have moved their glass production onshore, helping to reduce freight emissions from their supply chain. They have reduced the glass weight in their Single Malt bottles by approximately 200g per bottle. They have moved to approximately 50% recycled glass content in every 700mL bottle, and they have implemented a plant-based closure. Starward Production Director Sam Slaney said “They have put into place some ambitious sustainability targets and have invested in their procedures, equipment, and infrastructure to deliver improvement. They are extremely proud to be making strides towards those targets with their new pack, bringing their whisky to consumers with less impact on the planet.”The new Starward pack is rolling out now across Australia, available online at starward.com.au and in all leading liquor stores and will arrive in overseas markets early 2024. The new pack will be supported by an integrated media campaign, designed to generate buzz and entice curious drinkers into the category. The campaign will be broadcast across social media, video across YouTube. We were pretty impressed with their suite of various whisky variations when we met and tasted them at TFWA 2024 in Singapore, and to this day, the structure, tastiness and finesse lingers in our tastebuds; as such, we are pretty honoured and privileged to partner with Starward and to share their lovely whiskys in their key important markets, in Asia, in both domestic market and in travel retail. - Pagoda Odyssey 1915: From Shanghai to San Francisco
A full set of 84 hand-carved model pagodas will be reunited in public for the first time in over a century at Pagoda Odyssey 1915: From Shanghai to San Francisco, the latest special exhibition by the Asian Civilisations Museum (ACM). Opening to the public this Friday, 31 May 2024, the exhibition traces the extraordinary journey of these models from the Tushanwan Workshop in Shanghai to the Panama-Pacific International Exposition of 1915 in San Francisco. Pagoda Odyssey unfolds across four main sections in the museum’s Special Exhibitions Gallery, with some objects spread across other galleries and spaces. Together with related works, including 104 figurines that illustrate the coexistence of tradition and modernity that characterised China at the time, the exhibition paints a vivid picture of cosmopolitan Shanghai and San Francisco at the turn of the 20th century, and looks at international expositions as platforms for trade and cultural exchange. Mr Clement Onn, Principal Curator (Asian Export Art & Peranakan) & Deputy Director (Curatorial & Research) of ACM and the Peranakan Museum explains, “The global odyssey of these handcrafted pagodas weaves a powerful narrative of cultural exchange between East and West that transcends time and space. This exhibition reflects ACM’s efforts to foster connections between Asia and the world, and to celebrate the beauty of Asian artistry and craftsmanship. We are proud to house these remarkable and exquisitely detailed works of art in the ACM collection, and to display them on a grand scale so that visitors can appreciate their craftsmanship and the insights they offer into China's architectural heritage.” A glimpse into Chinese architecture Pagoda Odyssey reflects the enduring legacy of fine craftsmanship in China. Crafted from teakwood, the models were based on real pagodas in China, some of which have since been significantly modified, extensively restored, or otherwise no longer exist today. The models were created at the Tushanwan Workshop, established in Shanghai in 1864 by Jesuit missionaries. Guided by professionally trained priests, young artists were educated in the modern artistic methods of painting, carpentry, sculpture, metalworking, and photography. Many went on to storied careers and influenced other celebrated artists in China. Notable alumni include the watercolourist Xu Yongqing and sculptor Zhang Chongren, while other artists such as Ren Bonian and Xu Beihong were indirectly influenced. The enduring legacy of Tushanwan continues to inspire new generations of artists today. The meticulously crafted models range from 30 centimetres to over two metres in height, and represent a groundbreaking effort at the time to systematically research, document, and reproduce iconic pagodas from different regions and historical periods. As both a creative endeavour and a research project, the Tushanwan models serve as a vital architectural archive that preserves the essence of these pagodas as they stood at the dawn of the century. Cultural exchange in Shanghai and San Francisco The Panama-Pacific International Exposition of 1915 was an important world's fair that celebrated both the completion of the Panama Canal in August 1914 and San Francisco’s recovery from a major earthquake in 1906. Attracting over 18 million visitors during its 288-day run, the exposition saw 31 countries participating to showcase their cultural and technological advancements. These included the introduction of many pioneering technologies on the world stage, such as demonstrations of the first transcontinental phone call and a fully operational automobile assembly plant. China's participation in the 1915 exposition reflected its commitment to showcase itself as a modern nation on a par with industrialised Western powers. At the exposition, participating nations demonstrated new methods and systems of education at the Palace of Education. These included China’s display of works from different types of schools, such as the full set of 84 model pagodas by the Tushanwan Workshop. To many visitors, the pagodas offered a first glimpse of China’s rich architectural heritage. Pagoda Odyssey is complemented by Towers of Faith, a photography display that invites visitors to contemplate parallels in the religious architecture of Singapore through photographs and drawings of five local religious organisations and their associated buildings – Lian Shan Shuang Lin Monastery, Yu Huang Gong, Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple, Sultan Mosque, and Saint Andrew’s Cathedral. In addition to archival materials and visual resources, this display presents a contemporary perspective through a collaboration with award-winning Singaporean architectural photographer Darren Soh. These works create a dialogue between the historical and the contemporary, and illustrate the continuing importance of religious architecture in today's Singapore. Exploring new approaches to physical and virtual visitor interaction, Journey into the Pagoda is an immersive virtual reality (VR) experience inspired by the architecture and folklore of the Pagoda of Six Harmonies in Hangzhou. Developed in partnership with Microsoft and Cognizant, this VR exploration blends fantasy and reality, bringing to life a pagoda’s architectural form complete with stunning landscapes. The experience takes visitors on a journey through the interior of the pagoda to a mythical creature awaiting at the top. For the first time at ACM, the exhibition also introduces a hyper-tactile experience, enabling visitors to directly interact with 3D-printed replicas of the model pagodas, as well as replica wooden brackets called dougong, enabling visitors to explore the intricacy of traditional Chinese joinery. Visitors can also enjoy a range of activities including digital and on-site programmes, talks, symposia and conferences, curator tours, and weekend festivals. Visitors can also visit Pagoda Land to make their own pagodas using LEGO bricks, and participate in other hands-on activities as they conclude their visit to the exhibition. These programmes are held in conjunction with the exhibition and reflect ACM's dedication to making Pagoda Odyssey a captivating and interactive experience for diverse audiences. Pagoda Odyssey 1915: From Shanghai to San Francisco runs from 31 May 2024 to 1 June 2025 at ACM. Admission charges apply. For more information, please visit www.acm.org.sg. - Gambero Rosso Tre Bicchieri World Tour 2024 : Singapore
The Gambero Rosso Tre Bicchieri World Tour 2024 opened its doors at the iconic CHIJMES Hall in Singapore on 23rd May 2024, marking its first Asian stop for this year's prestigious series. The Tre Bicchieri-themed event showcased and presented the crème de la crème of Italian wines from illustrious wine estates and wineries to the public, wine lovers, and trade visitors, each proudly bearing the esteemed ‘bicchieri’ or ‘wine glasses’ awards from the renowned Vini d’Italia guide, published annually by Gambero Rosso. We were pretty amazed at the quality, finesse and structure by most of the wines on display and on taste-representation at Gambero Rosso, and having supported this show for the past 7 years, aside from the covid-gap, we have to say that the showcase just gets better and better each year. His Excellency Dante Brandi, Ambassador of the Italian Republic, Italian Embassy in Singapore, graced the event's opening ceremony. Mr Luigi Salerno, CEO, Gambero Rosso, and Mr Marco Sabellico, Wine Curator & Editor, Vini d'Italia guide, shared their welcome address with guests, visitors, and wine exhibitors at the opening ceremony. Revered as the ‘Bible of Italian Wines’ by various wine fraternities globally, this guide awards the coveted Tre Bicchieri (three glasses) to only the finest wines, following an exhaustive and meticulous selection process from thousands of contenders. At the show, the presented wines hailed from various regions of Italy, representing a diverse selection of vineyards and wine estates. The featured regions include Campania, Friuli- Venezia Giulia, Lazio, Marche, Piemonte, Puglia, Sicilia, Umbria, and Veneto. Singapore holds significant importance for the Gambero Rosso Tre Bicchieri World Tour 2024 for several reasons. Strategically located in the heart of Southeast Asia, Singapore serves as a critical gateway to the Asian market, making it an ideal location for showcasing Italian wines to a broad and diverse audience. As one of the world's leading financial and trade centres, Singapore attracts a high concentration of affluent consumers and influential buyers, including top sommeliers, wine importers, and restaurant owners. This crucial economic factor ensures a wide-reaching and impactful presence for Italian wines in the region. Gambero Rosso, the most important multimedia brand in the Italian food and wine world, celebrates its 37 years of activity. In 1986, Gambero Rosso took its first steps as an insert in a daily newspaper, but by the next year its first Guida dei Vini went to print, the 1988 edition. After that, dozens of guides and books followed. In 1999, Gambero Rosso Channel, the first thematic television channel in Europe, began broadcasting. Shortly after, a constellation of the Città del Gusto sites was founded in Italy, followed by Gambero Rosso Academy in the rest of the world, with cooking classes for professionals and amateurs, along with courses about wine, journalism master programs, and seminars on restaurant management. Recently, the company was launched on the stock market. Meanwhile, a fascination with Italy has been growing in the world, a longing for its authentic products, and Gambero Rosso events organized around the globe have multiplied. Since the first ones in 1990, the number of events on our international calendar has grown to over 40. They are above all, but not only, dedicated to wine, supported by the translations of the guide Vini d’Italia. That volume is translated in German, English, Chinese and Japanese. Tre Bicchieri – the Gambero Rosso symbol of wine excellence The Gambero Rosso symbol of wine excellence, Tre Bicchieri (three glasses), has become the benchmark award, and an unquestioned reference point, a guarantee of premium quality all over the world. It has even been chosen as the criteria for access into some of the most important wine monopolies in the world. Alongside the Italian monthly, Gambero Rosso Wine Travel Food is an international magazine in English, read by experts and wine enthusiasts all over the world. Top Italian Restaurant Awards 2024 Wine enthusiasts, Italian food lovers and connoisseurs also gathered to witness the celebrated ‘Top Italian Restaurants Awards 2024’ ceremony, where Singapore's most authentic Italian restaurants, wine bars, and pizzerias were honoured based on the digital guide’s ratings. A total of nine local Italian F&B establishments - ranging from restaurants, wine bars, and pizzerias; were honoured this year. These establishments will be listed in the sixth edition of the Gambero Rosso Top Italian Restaurants World Guide: Global Wine Market Overview According to market research findings by Market Research Future (MRFR)*, a global market research company, the global wine market size was valued at USD 296.6 billion in 2022. The wine market industry is projected to grow from USD 314.24 Billion in 2024 to USD 444.50 billion by 2030, exhibiting a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.95% during the forecast period (2024 - 2030). Increasing consumption of wine and changing lifestyle patterns are the key market drivers enhancing market growth. After the show in Singapore, the Gambero Rosso Tre Bicchieri World Tour 2024 will continue its journey to various cities worldwide, such as Hong Kong, Stockholm, and Oslo to showcase Italy’s selection of prominent wines. #GamberoRossoSG #TreBicchieriWorldTour2024 #FinestItalianWines Instagram: @gamberorossointernational Facebook: Gambero Rosso International
- Children’s Season 2024
LEARN, PLAY AND CREATE WITH CHILDREN’S MUSEUM SINGAPORE AND THE MUSEUM ROUNDTABLE! For children, by children: Children had a hand in shaping the offerings for Children’s Season 2024 and the new “Into the Hawkerverse” exhibition launching in conjunction with the festival. Introduction Children’s Museum Singapore is the first museum in Singapore dedicated to children 12 years old and below. The museum believes in sparking wonder and the power of play in a safe environment. CMSG aspires to be a place of wonder and joyful learning for all children to engage with Singapore and the world. Families with young children can look forward to interactive exhibits, anchored in rich storytelling, complemented by engaging programmes and initiatives. Children will have hands-on opportunities to learn about Singapore’s heritage through play. CMSG will organise educational programmes throughout the year to cater to children of different age groups and abilities. These programmes are created in collaboration with educators to ensure that they are developmentally appropriate for children. CMSG is housed in a historical double-storey colonial building that was formerly part of Anglo-Chinese School in 1906. The building housed the Methodist Book Room in the 1970s and 1980s, before being converted to become the Singapore Philatelic Museum in 1995. About Children's Season Celebrate innovation and creativity this Children’s Season with Children’s Museum Singapore (CMSG) and the Museum Roundtable (MR)! Helmed by CMSG for the first time, this year’s edition of the festival is anchored on the theme of “Innovation”, inviting young ones to explore various inventions, and inspiring them to think creatively. From 25 May to 23 June 2024, families will be able to enjoy a slew of exciting programmes across 21 participating MR museums and galleries. In conjunction with Children’s Season, CMSG will also be launching a new hawker-themed exhibition titled Into the Hawkerverse. Mrs Wai Yin Pryke, Museum Director of CMSG, said: “Children have some of the most imaginative minds out there, and there’s no better way to celebrate Children’s Season than to encourage this creativity. This year, we are focusing on the theme of innovation to inspire children to think outside of the box and become pioneering changemakers. We have lined up exciting programmes for Children’s Season together with the launch of our newest exhibition An institution of Into the Hawkerverse, to engage children in joyful learning and instil in them a love for our museums from young.” Launch of Children’s Panel for Children’s Season In collaboration with The Artground, Singapore’s first multi-disciplinary children’s arts centre, CMSG has formed the inaugural Children’s Panel for Children’s Season. The panel consists of 15 children between the ages of eight and 12, and aims to provide a range of arts and cultural experiences in various venues. Through this, CMSG hopes to provide children with autonomy, while tapping on their creativity and insights to shape the offerings for Children’s Season. The Children’s Panel was involved in curating the line-up of Signature Programmes for the festival, where they reviewed and selected four out of seven shortlisted works to be further developed as the Signature Programmes. The Children’s Panel will also experience running the festival with a “takeover” of programme registration at select museums, making this Children’s Season truly for children, by children. Children’s Season 2024 Signature Programmes and Partnership Programmes The Signature Programmes for Children’s Season 2024 comprise a series of four interactive performances hosted across four participating MR museums and galleries, namely the Asian Civilisations Museum, CMSG, Former Ford Factory and Singapore Maritime Gallery. Each Signature Programme is site-specific to the presenting museum, making the content and experience unique to it. For example, CMSG’s focus is on food innovation, which relates to its new special exhibition Into the Hawkerverse. Complementary to this, the Signature Programme at CMSG is Oodles of Noodles, where families can join a roving performance along Armenian Street, and help the main character Izzy invent new recipe ideas through a food trail. Participants will also get to create their very own fusion laksa craft at the end of the trail through a craft session. Over at the Singapore Maritime Gallery, which showcases Singapore’s rich maritime heritage and industry, young explorers can embark on an adventure with a pirate crew while learning about Singapore’s development as a maritime nation. CMSG has also joined hands with numerous MR members to bring Partnership Programmes to Children’s Season 2024. Partnership Programmes are free activities organised by participating MR members and hosted at CMSG, helping MR members tap on a new audience of children and families while creating fun experiences for them to enjoy. These programmes either fall under the theme of innovation, or are in line with CMSG’s Into the Hawkerverse exhibition. For example, the Eurasian Heritage Gallery will be introducing a series of cooking workshops on Eurasian dishes for participants to get hands-on experience in cooking and trying dishes that they may not be familiar with. There will be three different workshops, where they will learn how to cook dishes from chef Mary Gomes, such as Curry Debal (also known as Curry Devil), Pang Susie (a savoury bun) and Kueh Kochi (a chewy kueh). Into the Hawkerverse Exhibition In conjunction with Children’s Season, CMSG will also be launching an all-new exhibition titled Into the Hawkerverse. The exhibition aims to introduce Singapore’s vibrant and indispensable hawker culture to children and deepen their understanding of hawker culture in a fun, immersive and interactive way. Covering various aspects of hawker culture from street hawkers and hawker culture heroes to hawker dishes and hawker centre design, Into the Hawkerverse will feature hands-on activities, multisensory exploration, and object-based learning. Children will be engaged across three galleries and Play Pot, a dedicated playspace designed for children below four years old – featuring a masak-masak playspace with a mee goreng pool, and more. Children’s Season Stamp booklet activity In addition, Children’s Season’s well-loved stamp booklet activity will make a return this year! Families can visit any of the 21 participating MR members to get a stamp booklet to collect unique museum stamp imprints upon completion of a simple activity. Stamp collectors also stand a chance to win Children’s Season 2024 exclusive prizes once they have completed any of the three-tiered milestones in their stamp booklet, based on the number of stamps collected.
