  • Glenfiddich - Jeanette Wee

Glenfiddich launches exclusive whisky cup collection with Jeanette Wee ‘Ceramics’ usually brings to mind a traditional medium, an artform practised by ancient masters – an outdated perception that Singaporean ceramicist Jeanette Adrienne Wee is determined to change. Bringing a modern touch to a traditional art form, Jeanette and Glenfiddich have launched the Glenfiddich New Dawn Singapore Collection – which takes the brand’s history of innovation and pairs it with Jeanette’s commitment to experimentation. The result is a collection that plays with the current approaches to drinking whisky. About the Collaboration Jeanette visited the Glenfiddich distillery in Dufftown, Scotland to learn more about the brand. During her visit, she was inspired by the brand’s history of experimentation and was struck by how whisky, much like pottery, has a long-standing set of rules and traditions – all of which can be challenged. Working with Brett Bayly, Glenfiddich’s Southeast Asian Ambassador, Jeanette set out to create a collection that plays with the current ways of drinking whisky while at the same time, takes cues from the elements and textures she encountered in the home of Glenfiddich. About the Collection To create the pieces, she paired her knowledge of Eastern ceramics with the whisky-drinking traditions and tools of the West. Grog And Glass – The cup’s black and grey exterior is inspired by the texture of the stone walls found all over Aberdeen. The cup’s unique shape is reminiscent of the Glenfiddich bottle’s signature shape, and its base includes melted glass to reflect the whisky’s colour. Porcelain In Light – Adding a twist to the iconically-shaped whisky nosing glass, Jeanette used porcelain for this piece to allow light to seep in through the base of the cup – allowing drinkers to appreciate the colour of the whisky while they’re sipping it. Stoneware Trio – Inspired by Sake drinkware, this set plays on the time-honoured practice of serving Glenfiddich neat. While the bottle is reminiscent of a sake bottle, the decanter is shaped like a whisky washback, and has been specially designed to lower the temperature of the whisky without affecting its integrity. Ash In Rock – For this piece, Jeanette took inspiration from the way whisky-drinkers swirl their glass to aerate the whisky. She wanted to add a light-hearted element to the collection, so this glass lets drinkers roll the glass and play with the whisky while they’re drinking it. Lovers of Glenfiddich stand a chance to win one of five pieces from Jeannette’s exclusive whisky cup collection, hand-picked by the ceramist herself. To enter, simply log on to the Glenfiddich’s Facebook account and follow the contest rules. The competition will run from 7 until 15 December 2019, with winners announced via Facebook from the week of 16 December onwards.

  • SMBC Singapore Open 2020

SMBC Singapore Open has Olympic ring to it SINGAPORE, JANUARY 13: Ten Olympians, including the gold, silver and bronze medallists, will tee it up at this week’s SMBC Singapore Open - a rarity in world golf. Major winners Justin Rose of England and Sweden’s Henrik Stenson took the gold and silver respectively at the Rio Olympics in 2016 when golf returned to the Games after an 112-year absence while American Matt Kuchar, a multiple winner on the PGA Tour, claimed the bronze. Australia’s Marcus Fraser tied for fifth spot while leading Japanese player Yuta Ikeda, who has won 21 times on his home tour. was (coincidentally enough) 21st equal. Brazil’s Adilson da Silva, a regular on the Asian Tour, and four Asian players - Danny Chia (Malaysia), SSP Chawrasia (India), Miguel Tabuena (Philippines) and Siddikur Rahman (Bangladesh) - represented their country at the Olympic tournament. The presence of so many Olympians headed by the three medallists is a coup for the SMBC Singapore Open and it further polishes its reputation, just two years after Spain’s Sergio Garcia arrived at Sentosa Golf Club as Masters champion. Rose was enthusiastic about being a part of Team GB as golf made its Olympic return and less than an hour into his opening round on the Barra da Tijuca course in Rio, he had a hole-in-one at the 189-yard par- 3 fourth hole - the first ever ace at the Games. “When you’re the first to do anything no one can ever take that away from you,” he said. “That was definitely a cool moment.” Rose went on to pip Stenson on the 18th hole of the final round after a titanic battle, for a memorable victory. “Oh my God, that felt better than anything I’ve ever won,” said Rose, after becoming Olympic golf’s first champion since Canada’s George Lyon at St Louis in 1904. American Kuchar stormed into bronze medal position with a best-of-the-day 63 that tied the Olympic course record. “It’s the happiest I’ve ever been to finish third,” said Kuchar, who finished three strokes behind Rose. “I’m just bursting with pride right now.” Malaysia’s Chia was pleased just to take part after a shoulder injury several years earlier had threatened to end his career. “I feel like I’m still dreaming,” said Chia, who was the oldest member of Malaysia’s Olympic contingent at aged 43, at the time. “It’s been a long journey, the last two years. From being not sure if I would ever play golf again to going to the Olympics. It’s just unbelievable.” The SMBC Singapore Open is jointly sanctioned by the Asian Tour and the Japan Tour with total prize money of US$1 million.

  • TFWA China Reborn 2020

TFWA China Reborn – TFWA President Alain Maingreaud In his opening speech to delegates at this morning’s TFWA China Reborn virtual event, TFWA President Alain Maingreaud highlighted the importance of coming together as an industry, as the business adapts to what he described as a “changed world”. He said: “Virtual meetings have been a lifeline for many, enabling businesses to continue and families to stay in touch. They have allowed our industry to overcome the communication challenges posed by COVID-19, but we know that direct human contact is the basis on which our business is built and prospers. Maingreaud reminded delegates of the progress made by the duty free and travel retail industry in recent years, with sales continuing to grow up until the outbreak of COVID-19. “It seems an age ago, but 2019 finished on a positive note for duty free and travel retail, with total global sales reaching US$86.4bn based on the latest data from Generation Research. That represents an uplift of +9.9% versus 2018.” This is absolutely remarkable. However, this growth swiftly turned negative as coronavirus spread at the start of the year, with few predicting a fast recovery following weaker demand for air travel in August and September, Maingreaud said: “The extent to which our world has changed would have been unimaginable 12 months ago. The disruption to international travel brought by the pandemic has already been covered extensively in the trade press, and the resulting impact on our industry is something we have all faced directly since March of this year. “The International Air Transport Association recently revised downwards its passenger traffic forecast for this year, predicting a drop of 66% versus 2019. That seems entirely possible based on the Airports Council International assessment that international passenger traffic fell by 64.5% year on year during the first half of 2020. “In October, US aircraft maker Boeing, usually more optimistic in its forecast than European rival Airbus, lowered its expectation for global passenger jet demand over the next decade by double digits, as airlines around the world cut their fleets and bring forward the retirement of other planes. Boeing’s vice president of commercial marketing is quoted as saying it will take five years or longer to recover to the long-term trend. And when demand returns, will airlines still have the capacity to satisfy it fully?” Despite the “considerable commercial and human pain caused by COVID-19”, Maingreaud said it is clear that new possibilities are emerging in the duty free and travel retail sector. He highlighted new developments in China, which has seen the fastest economic recovery of all global regions since the start of the pandemic. “China’s duty free and travel retail market is prime example of what can be achieved when stakeholders proactively embrace change in a supportive, regulatory environment. The Chinese government’s success in bringing the pandemic under control and the strength of the subsequent economic recovery has helped fuel the substantial rise of sales to Chinese travellers in off-shore and downtown duty free stores. “The surge in domestic tourism has increased footfall at these outlets. But it is the government’s new duty free policy for Hainan island, added to the development of new free trade ports, that is playing a decisive role. In July, the annual shopper allowance was more than tripled to around US$14,000 for purchases made on the island. The range of goods available there has also been expanded to include wines & spirits and tobacco, along with smartphones, laptops and other high-demand items. “In addition to these changes, the award of three new duty operating licenses this year, two of them for Hainan, is encouraging an element of competition among operators. The results have been impressive. In the four months ending 31st October, more than 1.7 million people visited Hainan’s duty free stores, a rise of 59% on the previous year. Total duty free sales were over three times the 2019 figure at US$1.81bn. Maingreaud highlighted the success of China Duty Free Group as further proof of China’s economic resurgence, with CDFG becoming the world’s largest travel retailer by revenue for the first six months of 2020. He added that the group’s CDF Mall in Sanya had benefited from several high-profile summer activations by prominent luxury and duty brands, including Ray-Ban and Shiseido, which had used strong digital elements to amplify their effect. Maingreaud said: “Interactivity, virtual reality and live-streaming, have all served to boost shopper engagement on the ground and, just as importantly, extend the reach to wider audiences of potential travellers online. While not new to travel retail, these digital tools have become essential at a time when our global industry urgently needs to attract and inspire shoppers. Brands and retailers operating outside China will be keen to learn from this experience.” With the pandemic bringing e-commerce to the fore in markets around the world, Maingreaud said China will be at the epicentre of the next stage of development within duty free and travel retail. However, while online and digital would be “crucial” to the industry’s short- and long-term development, Maingreaud said bricks-and-mortar will continue to play a vital role. Over recent weeks, a number of leading brands have chosen to open new boutiques in Sanya, clearly seeing the benefit of a physical retail presence at high traffic destinations like the CDF Mall. Maingreaud said a similar blend of physical and digital elements will likely be the formula for future TFWA events, including the forthcoming TFWA Asia Pacific Exhibition & Conference taking place from 9th to 13th May next year. “Given the present uncertainty affecting international travel, we are keeping an open mind about the format of this event. We will take into account the wishes of our own members and the wider industry, as well as local conditions throughout the region as we make our plans. Yet Asia Pacific’s importance to duty free and travel retail makes a regionally focused event essential, whatever shape it takes. “More than ever at this difficult time, TFWA’s role is to bring our industry together, whether in person or virtually, as part of our mission to provide the business with the platform for growth.” While the pandemic is having a devastating impact on duty free and travel retail business, Maingreaud said operators must continue to adapt and “not retreat from the progress made over the last decade” in order to prosper when passengers finally return to the skies and seas. “Once seen as channel only capable of selling a limited selection of high rotation products at a saving to domestic markets, our industry has in recent years managed to build vibrant retail environments that can rival the best on the high street. Our stores now offer an eclectic mix of brands. The increasing use of technology is creating a more engaging shopper experience. Maingreaud made a powerful statement by sharing that “Our appeal to travellers when international traffic resumes depends on our ability to generate excitement in store. We must harness that ability to emerge stronger than ever from the pandemic.”

  • CANCELLATION : F1 SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX 2020

12 June 2020, Singapore – Race promoter Singapore GP Pte Ltd and Formula 1 today announced the cancellation of the FORMULA 1 SINGAPORE AIRLINES SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX 2020, due to continuing nationwide restrictions on construction and business activities brought about by the COVID- 19 pandemic. While there are still more than three months to go before the scheduled race on 20 September, we regret to announce that we will be unable to proceed with the race due to the prohibitions imposed on access and construction of the event venue required for a street race to be held in the city. Confirmation of the cancellation will also give certainty to our fans, ticketholders, and commercial partners. Apart from the closure of the event venue, other challenges include ongoing mass gathering and worldwide travel restrictions. These and other measures were understandably put in place by the Singapore Government and the various authorities to prioritise safety and are targeted to manage the COVID-19 pandemic. With these limitations, which continue to remain in place, building and construction work of the circuit, which normally commences in May, have not been able to commence. We are therefore unable to complete the race circuit infrastructure in time for the race to take place. “The last few months have been extremely challenging on all fronts, and we have now made this difficult decision which Formula 1 and our stakeholders accept we have had to take. Ultimately, the health and safety of our contractors and their workers, spectators, Formula 1 crew, staff and volunteer marshals is our number one priority and we thank everyone for their patience and unwavering support thus far. While we are disappointed that we won’t be able to host the race this year, we look forward to welcoming fans to the race next season and wish the Formula 1 community well as it starts its season in July,” said Mr Colin Syn, Deputy Chairman of Singapore GP Pte Ltd (SGP). Ms Ong Ling Lee, Director, Sports, Singapore Tourism Board, commented: “The Singapore Tourism Board (STB) supports the joint decision by race promoter Singapore GP Pte Ltd and Formula 1 to cancel the Formula 1 Singapore Airlines Singapore Grand Prix 2020, as this safeguards the health and wellbeing of participants, fans and all Singaporeans. Since 2008, the F1 race has generated benefits for both Singapore and the F1 franchise, with many local businesses actively involved in race preparations and operations. We take pride in our track record of hosting the first and only F1 night street race for the past 12 years, and we look forward to its return next year.” Singapore GP will provide existing ticketholders with automatic refunds within 30 business days, or if preferred, an option to rollover their ticket to next year’s event. Ticketholders will be contacted with more information on the next steps. Ticketholders who purchased via SGP’s Authorised Ticketing Partners should contact them for refunds. In the meantime, Formula 1 fans in Singapore can look forward to a host of exciting programmes in the coming months as part of our continued efforts to engage fans and promote the sport. ABOUT THE FORMULA 1 SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX Singapore has successfully hosted a decade of night racing and Asia’s only street race on the Formula 1® calendar in the Republic since 2008. The Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix will continue to enthral crowds with its unique combination of night race action and world-class entertainment till 2021. See the world’s finest drivers go wheel-to-wheel under lights at speeds of up to 320km/h, threading the barriers around Singapore’s picturesque Marina Bay featuring a spectacular backdrop of iconic heritage buildings, modern architecture and a stunning skyline.

  • Morton’s The Steakhouse

Morton’s The Steakhouse New Menu Offerings Dec 2020 Long before the current generation of steakhouses like Cut and Wolfgang Steakhouse burst onto the scene, Morton’s The Steakhouse was one of the early pioneers to open in Singapore more than 20 years ago. Despite the keen competition from the new kids on the block, Morton’s is still the grand daddy of steakhouses still operating in their original location at Mandarin Oriental Hotel. We decided to drop by on a Monday evening for dinner to utilize some of our travel budget since international borders are currently closed and travel is not allowed. The place was packed full house for a Monday night. Although Morton’s is famous for its steaks, there is a little known fact that it also serves non beef dishes on their menu. We decided to try some of these as we were told by our assigned wait staff that there were some new items recently added to the menu. We ordered the Bacon Steaks $38 and Tuna Tacos $39.50 for starters. The Tuna Tacos was very fresh and zesty and the crispy tacos paired really well with our house white wine. The Bacon Steaks was well marinated and not too salty or fatty. Another new item on the menu which we tried was the Seared Sea Scallops with Lobster and Caviar Butter $115. The Scallops were crispy on the outside and fresh and succulent on the inside. The lobster was also fresh and juicy. We had the Filet Mignon Oscar style with Lobster on top. We have dined at Morton’s many times over the years and the consistency of its steaks stays true to course day in, day out. We had 2 sides to pair with the mains. Lobster Macaroni and Cheese $58 and Truffled Mashed Cauliflower $28. They were really yummy and delicious, and good value for money. To round off the evening, we had to have the legendary Morton’s Signature Hot Chocolate Lava Cake $38. It was oozing with hot chocolate lava upon first bite. It was not too sweet and it offered a perfect sweet ending to our evening.
