Come and meet the robots in an impressive line-up of programmes over two weekends SINGAPORE (18 May 2017) – Step into the bold new world of artificial intelligence, life-like robots and genetic modification with the arrival of HUMAN+: The Future of Our Species at ArtScience Museum from 20 May 2017. Meet the world’s first officially recognised human cyborg, Neil Harbisson, get up close and personal with the uncannily realistic humanoid robot, Nadine, and meet one of the world’s leading performance artists, Stelarc. They are all part of a cutting-edge exhibition of thought- provoking works from more than 40 international artists, scientists, technologists and designers at this exhibition. A blockbuster exhibition not to be missed, HUMAN+ seeks to ask what it means to be a human in the present and future, and examines the moral issues and ethical conflicts raised in using technology to modify ourselves. A co-production between ArtScience Museum, Science Gallery at Trinity College Dublin and Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona (CCCB), HUMAN+ imagines the future of humanity with spectacular demonstrations of the latest robotic technologies, intriguing contemporary artworks, and remarkable innovations from local institutions. A key highlight at HUMAN+ is the first public appearance of Nadine, one of the world’s most realistic female humanoid robots. Visitors will be able to interact with Nadine, a socially intelligent robot, who can recognise people she has previously met and can engage in conversations. She is living proof of what lies in the forefront of research into assistive technologies that are being developed for people with special needs in Singapore. Nadine is created by Nadia Magnenat Thalmann, Director of Institute for Media Innovation (IMI) at Nanyang Technological University. Visiting Singapore for the opening programme are two legends of art and technology. On 20 May, Neil Harbisson, best known for having an antenna implanted into his skull, will take part in the opening conference, Future Sapiens. As he was born without the ability to see colour, the antenna allows him to perceive colours via sound waves. On 27 May, ArtScience Museum will host Stelarc, a seminal performance artist from Australia, who works with his body, using prosthetics, robotics, virtual reality systems, and the internet. He is also well known for having an unnervingly realistic ear surgically grafted to his left forearm. “Our perception of what it means to be human has been transformed by science and technology. Advances in genetic engineering, biotechnology and nanotechnology that not long ago seemed purely science fiction are now real. Cyborgs, superhumans and clones are alive amongst us today. What does it mean to be human now? Should we continue to embrace modifications to our minds, bodies and daily lives, or are there boundaries we shouldn’t overstep? HUMAN+ includes some of the most important and provocative artists working today, including Oron Catts and Ionat Zurr, ORLAN, and Stelarc, who are showing alongside some of Singapore’s most brilliant minds, including Robert Zhao Renhui, Louis-Philippe Demers, and Nadia Thalmann. Spanning four themed galleries, HUMAN+ begins by exploring what we mean by human and super-human, and asks if you could enhance your abilities, what would you change? It includes Aimee Mullins, Sophie de OIiveira Barata, Corinne Mariaud, ORLAN, Marc Owens, Lorenz Potthast, Addie Wagenknecht, Chris Woebken and Kenichi Okada, Nina Sellars, Stelarc, Neil Harbisson and Moon Ribas. The second chapter asks what happens when we live side by side with our robotic companions. It explores how emerging technologies are changing the ways we encounter family, friends, co- workers and even pets. It includes daring artworks Louis-Philippe Demers, Addie Wagenknecht, Cao Fei, S.W.A.M.P, Yves Gellie, and Heidi Kumao. Also on show is a playful and sophisticated interactive installation developed by students from Nanyang Polytechnic’s School of Interactive Design Media, called TEASE. The third chapter asks if we change the environment, will we have to change ourselves in order to adapt to it? It features intriguing speculative artworks and design prototypes by Laura Allcorn, Antony Dunne and Fiona Raby, Superflux, Liam Young, The Centre for PostNatural History, Nikolaus Geyrhalter and Singaporean artist, Robert Zhao Renhui. The exhibition ends by delving into the limits of human life. It explores whether the biotech laboratory is the art studio of the future, through compelling and controversial work from Agatha Haines, Oron Catts and Ionat Zurr, Julijonas Urbonas, Zoe Papadopoulou, Jaemin Paik, James Auger and Jimmy Loizeau. Programmes over opening weekends of HUMAN+ In conjunction with the opening of HUMAN+, visitors can participate in a series of complementary programmes over the next two weekends. These events will draw on unique insights from prominent figures in the fields of robotics, biotechnology, synthetic biology and artificial intelligence regarding the possible futures of human beings. They include Neil Harbisson, Nadia Magnenat Thalmann, Oron Catts, Agatha Haines, Louis-Philippe Demers and Stelarc. As part of the opening programme of HUMAN+, two pioneers of art and technology will come together for one afternoon of riveting presentations. Stelarc is one of the true legends of art and technology performance. Steve Dixon is President of LASALLE College of the Arts in Singapore, and a world-renowned scholar of technology in performance. The event centers around the work of Stelarc, a seminal performance artist from Australia, who works with his body. His radical performance works undertaken over three decades include 26 body suspension performances with hooks in his skin, three films of the insides of his body made by customized robot sculptures, and a series of performances using prosthetics, robotics, virtual reality systems, and the internet, where his body is moved and controlled involuntarily. His is also well known for having an unnervingly realistic ear surgically grafted to his left forearm. Commissioned artwork and prized artefacts from Asian Civilisations Museum on display SINGAPORE (30 March 2017) – Come 1 April, visitors can embark on an artistic voyage through the cosmos with ArtScience Museum’s latest exhibition, The Universe and Art. The new show weaves a rich constellation of Eastern and Western philosophies, ancient and contemporary art, and science and religion, to explore how humanity has constantly contemplated its presence in the Universe. It is jointly curated and organised by Mori Art Museum in Tokyo and ArtScience Museum. Featuring over 120 original artworks, scientific artefacts and manuscripts, this exhibition presents visions of the Universe from across the globe and through the centuries. Exhibiting alongside masterpieces from around the world, are important artefacts on loan from Singapore’s Asian Civilisations Museum, and a newly commissioned installation by British sculptor, Conrad Shawcross. The Universe and Art unfolds in four parts. It begins with a focus on historical cosmologies from around the world, including religious art from the Buddhist, Hindu and Jain traditions, on loan from Asian Civilisations Museum. The birth of astronomy as a science is charted through a remarkable collection of artefacts from east and west, including masterpieces by Copernicus, Galileo, Kepler, and Newton that are on show in Singapore for the first time. New scientific thinking on the Universe is examined in the second section of the show, in works by contemporary artists, including Björn Dahlem, Mariko Mori, Andreas Gursky, and the new commission by Conrad Shawcross. The third section of the exhibition explores the origin of life in the cosmos, through artworks by major figures, such as Pierre Huyghe, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Laurent Grasso, and Patricia Piccinini. The exhibition ends by pondering life in space, through the work of historical pioneer, Konstantin Tsiolkovsky, and contemporary artists including Arthur Woods, Kitsuo Dubois, Takuro Osaka, and Dragan Živadinov. “Humanity has always looked to art, mythology and philosophy in an attempt to fathom the Universe and its mysteries. The Universe and Art shows how these fields, when combined with the understanding generated by science, give us new insights into the cosmos. Key loans from Asian Civilisations Museum The Universe and Art at ArtScience Museum includes a collection of stunning artefacts on loan from Asian Civilisations Museum. These important works include religious artefacts, plus scientific manuscripts and instruments from across Asia. Religious art illustrates how the Universe was depicted in Jainism, Hinduism, Buddhism and Daoism. Astronomical texts from ancient Persia and the Arab world demonstrate an advanced comprehension of the celestial world. Scientific instruments show the innovations made by Muslim scientists a millennium ago. This is the first time that these prized artefacts are on display outside of Asian Civilisations Museum. Opening the exhibition is the Relic Stupa from India. Hailing from the 3rd or 4th Century, it is the oldest in the loan collection. A stupa is a monument built to consecrate relics of the Buddha. Ashoka the Great (r. 268 – 232 BC), who unified most of the Indian sub-continent for the first time, is said to have re-distributed the Buddha’s relics into 84,000 stupas across his empire. The spire on top symbolises the central pillar of the cosmos connecting Heaven and Earth. Another intriguing piece of artefact loan on display is the Jain Mandala. Cosmological diagrams (mandalas) were used in Jains’ rituals and meditation. A sky-clan Jina, one of 24 teachers in the Jain pantheon, sits in the center of a grid of divinities. Inscribed with mantras and seed syllables, this painting manifests higher realms of existence in Jain cosmology. An astrolabe hailing from Iran demonstrates the extraordinary innovations pioneered by scientists from the Islamic world. Astrolabes represent the rotations of three-dimensional celestial spheres in a two dimension format. The astrolabe on show in the exhibition displays features originally developed by Muslim scientists from the ninth century, including shadow squares for solving trigonometry problems and a movable straight edge used to measure the altitude of celestial objects. “The Asian Civilisations Museum is grateful and very excited to be collaborating with Mori Art Museum and ArtScience Museum on this exhibition. In juxtaposing premodern artefacts of cultural astronomy with contemporary works of art, we hope visitors will come away with an insight into how people across cultures and times have thought about the cosmos,” added Kennie Ting, Director of the Asian Civilisations Museum. Commissioned work by Conrad Shawcross The second part of the exhibition explores more recent scientific concepts. A key centrepiece is Slow Arc inside a Cube VIII by British artist, Conrad Shawcross, commissioned for the exhibition. Thanks to extraordinary advances in technology, radical new theories, and vast international science endeavours, we are now living through a golden age of discovery in astronomy. Yet despite this progress in our scientific understanding, much is still unknown. Scientists now believe that 95% of the Universe is comprised of mysterious substances and forces, called dark matter and dark energy, which defy current explanation. Known for his kinetic sculptures inspired by science, Shawcross has created an artwork that invites us to ponder these mysteries. A moving light within a metal cage projects mesmerising geometric shadows onto walls of the gallery. The artwork is inspired by the Nobel Prize winning biochemist, Dorothy Hodgkin, who developed crystal radiography. Hodgkin spoke about crystal radiography being like, “trying to work out the structure of a tree from seeing only its shadow.” This calls to mind the process of how astronomers work out the structure of invisible celestial phenomena, such as dark matter. The process of ‘gravitational lensing’, is much like crystal radiography, in that it gives astronomers a tool to detect invisible dark matter, by looking only at the gravitational effect it has on ordinary matter and light. This is ArtScience Museum’s second collaboration with Shawcross. In 2014, his artwork, Projections of a Perfect Third was featured in Da Vinci: Shaping the Future. The exhibition will allow visitors to dive into three intertwined stories – the history of French gaming company Ubisoft; the Assassin’s Creed saga, its rich historical setting and the contributions of the Singapore studio to the franchise; and for the first time in Singapore, visitors will also be able to get a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the Assassin’s Creed franchise and the faces behind the game. Visitors will also get the opportunity to learn more about the game creation process, the research behind it as well as the design of the characters, sound and music. They will get to understand the importance of teamwork and camaraderie in the process of game development. Virtual Reality Hackathon & Jam 24 – 27 April, IMDA Pixel Studios The first French-Asian Virtual Reality (VR) Hackathon and Jam is presented in partnership with Institut Français and WondaVR as part of the Voilah! French Festival. During this creative residency, four teams of participants from Singapore and Southeast Asia will explore the future of cinema, alongside French mentors and experts to produce VR movies in three days. The residency will include various aspects of film production such as writing scenarios, shooting, editing and publishing. On 27 April, a networking session and presentation of the final VR productions will take place at Pixel Studios. Week 1: 10 – 16 April 2017 A Play About Love directed by Jacques Vincey 9 – 21 April, Theatreworks Jacques Vincey, head of Tours National Drama Centre, stage director and French actor, will work with Singaporean actors on The Reunification of the two Koreas, an original play by the famous author Joël Pommerat, as part of an artist-in-residence programme in collaboration with Theatreworks. This play offers 20 contemporary interpretations – from heartbreaking to hilarious – on the age-old theme of love. The play, translated into English for the first time by Marc Goldberg and interpreted by Singaporean actors, will bring a fresh perspective and add a different dynamism to love. A public reading of the play with Singaporean actors will be held on 13 April 2017, 8pm. French Science Journey 10 April – 21 May, Various locations Conducted as part of the Voilah! French novelist, Jules Verne is best known for his adventure novels and his profound influence on the literary genre of science fiction. His novels include titles such as Voyages Extraordinaires, Journey to the Center of the Earth, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea and Around the World in Eighty Days. Jules Verne gave imagery a particular significance and explored connections between text and picture, making them inseparable. These mythical images that are remembered today have inspired international authors who revisit the images and the imagination of Jules Verne through drawings, comics and artworks. In order to present Jules Verne’s evocation, this unique exhibition is presented in two sequences. Week 2: 17 – 23 April 2017 La Cage Aux Folles 19 April – 13 May, Victoria Theatre Based on the French play La Cage Aux Folles by Jean Poiret, La Cage, presented by W!ld Rice, takes place in a fabulous nightclub in the heart of Tanjong Pagar. Winner of 11 Tony Awards and one of Broadway’s biggest hits, La Cage Aux Folles is a funny and heartwarming musical about one family’s struggle to stay together and true to themselves. Awarded the Straits Times Readers’ Choice Award for “Production of the Year” for its presentation in 2012, this new production is directed by Glen Goei and features a star-studded company led by Ivan Heng. The original film by Edouard Molinaro will be screened on this occasion. Quatuor Tana 19 April, CHIJMES Hall Recognised by The Guardian as “impeccable players’’, Quatuor Tana is a French modern string ensemble that promotes a contemporary repertoire, bringing to the fore the relationship between composer and performer. The recipient of an array of international awards, Quatuor Tana has performed at prestigious festivals and concerts worldwide, including La Folle Journée, Aix-en-Provence Festival and Abbaye de Royaumont. The concert will be followed by a Meet & Greet session with the musicians. Quatuor Tana will also give a closed-door showcase at Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music on 18 April. FAKE i REAL ME, Photographs by Corinne Mariaud 20 April – 26 June, Art+ Shanghai Gallery Photographer Corinne Mariaud presents FAKE i REAL ME, a photographic series shot in Singapore and Seoul that explores the importance of physical appearance amongst young women in these cities. Beyond the Surface, by Hélène Le Chatelier 9 May – 24 June , Intersections Gallery Hélène Le Chatelier’s Beyond the Surface aims at portraying our inner geography through ink wash paintings, sculptures and video installations. After being ditched by his girlfriend Friday (Audrey Tautou), he coerces Faeza (Sabrina Ouazani), a no-nonsense intern on her last shift, to help him find the funds to pay off an angry cast and crew, not to mention track down a live chimpanzee to perform in the play. This year, enjoy a complete retrospective of French screenwriter, director and actor Jacques Tati with screenings of all six of his feature-length films – Monsieur Hulot’s Holiday, Playtime, Mon Oncle, a colourised version of Jour de fête, the revelatory Traffic, and the little-seen Parade, along with four short films that contributed to the creation of his full-length cinematic masterpieces. Julien Doré – “&” Tour 21 May, 8pm, Kallang Theatre As part of the closing concert of Voilah! 2017, French pop-rock singer-songwriter, Julien Doré, will be making his first Asian tour stop in Singapore to present his newest album ” & “, which was released in October 2016. A result of deep reflection on life and nature, “&” exudes warmth and personality as Julien Doré complements it with his unique poetic writing. Since awarded with France’s prestigious Victoire de la musique (2015), Julien Doré has alternated between recording albums and going on numerous tours.

A New Standard of Speed and Focusing Accuracy Critical to the record-breaking speed of the new α9 is the combination of the new stacked 24.2 MP2 Exmor RS image sensor, new BIONZ X processor and front end LSI. The immense processing power from these new components allows for faster AF/AE calculation while also reducing EVF display latency. The processor and front end LSI are also responsible for the larger continuous shooting buffer, enabling photographers to shoot at a blazing 20 fps4 with continuous AF/AE tracking for up to 362 JPEG6 or 241 RAW5 images. The camera’s innovative AF system tracks complex, erratic motion with higher accuracy than ever before, with the ability to calculate AF/AE at up to 60 times per second10, regardless of shutter release and frame capture. Furthermore, when the shutter is released while shooting stills, the electronic viewfinder functions with absolutely no blackout12, giving the user a seamless live view of their subject at all times. This feature truly combines all of the benefits of an electronic viewfinder with the immediacy and “in the moment” advantages that not even the finest optical viewfinders can match, and is available in all still image modes13 including high speed 20 fps4 continuous shooting. The Fast Hybrid AF system – pairing the speed and excellent tracking performance of phase detection AF with the precision of contrast AF – achieves approximately 25% faster performance when compared with α7R II, ensuring all fast-moving subjects are captured. Professional Capabilities in a Compact Body Sony’s new full-frame camera is equipped with a variety of enhanced capabilities that give it a true professional operational style. The α9 features an all-new, high-resolution, high-luminance Quad-VGA OLED Tru-Finder with approximately 3,686k dots for extremely accurate, true-to-life detail reproduction. The new Tru- Finder, which is the highest resolution viewfinder Sony has ever incorporated in an α camera, features an optical design that includes a double-sided aspherical element, helping it to achieve 0.78x magnification and a level of corner to corner sharpness that is simply outstanding. The EVF also utilises a ZEISS® T* Coating to greatly reduce reflections, and has a fluorine coating on the outer lens that repels dirt. This all adds up to a luminance that is 2x higher than the XGA OLED Tru-Finder from the α7R II, creating a viewfinder image with a brightness level that is nearly identical to the actual scene being framed, ensuring the most natural shooting experience. The frame rate of the Tru-Finder is even customisable, with options to set it for 60 fps or 120 fps13 to best match the action. The α9 is equipped with an innovative 5-axis image stabilisation system that provides a shutter speed advantage of 5.0 steps9, ensuring the full power of the new sensor can be realised, even in challenging lighting. With a simple half press of the shutter button, the effect of the image stabilisation can be monitored in the viewfinder or on the LCD screen, allowing framing and focus to be accurately checked and continually monitored. The α9 also offers an Ethernet port (wired LAN terminal), allowing convenient transfer of still image files to a specified FTP server at high speeds, making it an ideal choice for studio photography, high-profile news and sporting events and more. In addition, there is a sync terminal, enabling external flash units and cables to be connected directly for convenient flash sync. New Features for Fast Operation Sony’s new α9 has several new and updated focus functions that support faster, easier focusing in a variety of situations. The camera features a multi-selector joystick on the back of the camera, allowing shooters to easily shift focus within the frame by pressing the multi-selector in any direction up, down, left or right when shooting in Zone, Flexible Spot or Expanded Flexible Spot focus area modes. The new model also offers touch focusing on the rear LCD screen for easy selection of, and shifting focus towards a desired focus point or subject. New for Sony E-mount cameras, the α9 includes the addition of separate drive mode and focus mode dials, plus a new “AF ON” button that can be pressed to activate autofocus directly when shooting still images or movies. Additional new capabilities include the “AF Area Registration”, which allows frequently used focus areas to be memorised and recalled via custom button assignments. There is also the ability to assign specific settings (exposure, shutter speed, drive mode, etc) to a custom button to be instantly recalled when needed. The camera can memorise and automatically recall the last focus point used in a vertical or horizontal orientation, instantly switching back to it when that specific orientation is used again. For enhanced customisation, a “My Menu” feature is available, allowing up to 30 menu items to be registered in a custom menu for instant recall when needed. Double Battery Life, Double Memory The innovative α9 camera features an all-new Sony battery (model NP-FZ100) with 2.2x the capacity of previous Sony full-frame models, allowing for much longer shooting performance. Based on extensive customer feedback, the new camera offers two separate media card slots, including one for UHS-II media. The same data can simultaneously be recorded to both cards, or the user can choose to separate RAW / JPEG or still images / movies. Movies can also simultaneously be recorded to two cards for backup and more efficient data management. High Sensitivity and Wide Dynamic Range The unique design of the α9 image sensor represents the pinnacle of Sony device technology. The 24.2 MP2 full-frame stacked CMOS sensor is back-illuminated, allowing it to capture maximum light and produce outstanding, true-to-life image quality. The sensor also enables the diverse ISO range of 100 – 51200, expandable to 50 – 20480014 , ensuring optimum image quality with minimum noise at all settings.
