  • Margaret Market

MARGARET MARKET TRANSFORMS SINGAPORE’S ONLY REMAINING CONSERVED MARKET BUILT BY THE SINGAPORE IMPROVEMENT TRUST INTO A MODERN COMMUNITY MARKETPLACE As defined by their ethos....we visited them one lovely evening and was truly thrilled to discover a charming hub right in the heartlands of Singapore ... a community at Margaret Market that supports homegrown local brands and relocated old trade who take pride in what they do with great care, enabling a healthier lifestyle with fitness, health and mental well-being services under one roof; envisioning the framework is a hub that serves as a vibrant destination where residents and visitors can gather and mingle.. We like the fact that they relocate residents and businesses, to continue their trade and business, and also in this format, re-living the old and traditional albeit in a modern community-centric setting. A truly wellness concept that is aptly juxtaposed into a community-based framework, that incorporates, healthcare, wellness care, community activities, brand concepts, products, produce and services, that is developed with the Singapore resident, expatriate and visitor in mind, different ages, coming together, purpose-driven... along with free health screenings, community programmes, fitness, arts and culture activities About Margaret Market Market Margaret Market is a first-of-its-kind conserved Marketplace for community gathering with a selection of wholesome food, good produce and fitness and wellness services. It takes over from what used to be the former Commonwealth Avenue Wet Market & Food Centre that was built in 1956. Gazetted for conservation by the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA), it now breathes new life as a modern community marketplace set to be the jewel of Singapore’s first satellite town of Queenstown. Within its open-space walls, Margaret Market gathers the community together with a food hangout space and trades of home-grown brands with deep local roots and a fitness and wellness centre. Margaret Market is curated and managed by Bethesda Medical, the master tenant and health service provider of the development. On the first Saturday of each month, there will be free health screening for the elderly. Community programmes made accessible to all walks of life are in the plans, including subsequent events themed around the farmer’s market as well as fitness programmes and arts and culture activity. Margaret Market at Queenstown welcomes all to this oldest market, today a revamped modern space featuring a curated selection of good food, wholesome produce plus fitness and health services. Margaret Market takes over from what used to be the former Commonwealth Avenue Wet Market & Food Centre that was built in 1956 and is the only remaining building in Singapore built by the Singapore Improvement Trust. Gazetted for conservation by the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA), it now breathes new life as Margaret Market, a new destination set to be the jewel of Singapore’s first satellite town of Queenstown. Across 1,800 square metres spread into two floors, Margaret Market seeks to bring vibrancy to the precinct and create an identity for the conserved building. It is intended as a space to bring different concepts together seamlessly, all in the efforts to allow residents to better appreciate the architectural landmark and its coinciding rich heritage of the area. Dr Stephen Tong, founder of Margaret Market says, “We hope that the market will be able to put local brands in the spotlight by providing a platform and a voice to local brands, giving them an opportunity to showcase their unique products and services and collectively help them reach a broader audience. We also hope to create a sense of pride and identity within the community by encouraging people to support their fellow local entrepreneurs, fostering a sense of cooperation among businesses and residents. We hope that Margaret Market will be able to inspire other places and communities with similar initiatives that support and uplift local businesses.” The Making of Margaret Market Margaret Market came to fruiition following a chance encounter by Dr Tong of the property on a website. The location spoke to him immediately with its distinctive layout and vintage architecture, presenting perfect plots for the diverse shops and traders he had in mind. LOCALITY: Local brands that are community focused are carefully curated to create this sense of identity. Instead of big conglomerates and chain brands, Margaret Market sought out boutique traders and food makers to highlight unique offerings and minimise duplication. Diversity is also prioritised with tenants, especially those with a commitment and passion for their concepts, selected in line with the sense of communiy intended for Margaret Market. HERITAGE: A cause close to Dr Tong’s heart are the traders from the soon-to-be demolished Tanglin Halt and surrounding neighbourhood. Hoping to keep their craft alive, his team reached out to more than 20 shop owners facing relocation and assisted them to find new spots to continue their trade within Margaret Market. Addressing their concerns and uncertainty of moving to a new foreign location, they were offered a reduced rate to overcome their challenges. COMMUNITY: On the food front, the team got recommendations from friends and networks and personally tasted their respective offerings to ensure quality. Brands presenting local flavours with a touch of heritage were bonuses. They now come together in a communal dining area that seats 70 people, with additional seating allocated at each eatery. A community that eats together, stays together – and the layout encourages just that with its communal dining concept flanked by ample hangout spots for residents and visitors to gather and mingle – along with other lifestyle, health and wellness converge at Margaret Market in a space made for the community, by the community. Supporting Local Brands As a lifestyle destination, Margaret Market is local-centric and seeks to support local brands, home bakers and cooks. Boutique local brands and first-time vendors and entrepreneurs will be spotlighted in a communal space, offering a variety of food and beverage delights and community gathering For food, sample the best of local talents with the likes of Urban Folks with their Australian-inspired jaffles and DIY acai bowls as well as The Homme Baker and their artisanal cakes. Both were previously home-based businesses that now have the opportunity to operate out of home thanks to a spot at Margaret Market. Take things up a notch with Margie, a swanky bistro bar serving up local tacos, bites and more with a side of drinks. We sampled some of the food and drinks, simple yet delicious, which to me is very important, a truly fantastic place to hang-out, to chill and to have a nice evening with friends and family.. Seafood is offered fresh and sweet at Bowen’s Café, complete with engaging in-house activities on weekend evenings for something for the whole family. Asian flavours come alive with the likes of WaWa Lala Bee Hoon that spotlights sweet whole clams in noodle soup dishes made using live clams for ultimate freshness. There’s also Kou Kou Xiang Ji Tang Fan, the chicken soup rice specialist that nourishes the heart and soul with chicken soup brewed for four hours with a variety of mushrooms from a recipe imported directly from Chengdu. Sweet treats are offered with Creamier artisanal ice cream café and Ya Kun Kaya Toast, a Singapore icon for local breakfast treats, both home-grown brands with deep local roots. Those seeking fresh fruits and whole foods will find all they need at Cu.Ra.Te, a fresh fruit and vegetable supplier specialising in seasonal fruits and vegetables. Building A Community Within its open-space walls, Margaret Market also aims to promote healthy minds and bodies. On a monthly basis, look forward to free health screenings, community programmes, fitness, arts and culture activities made accessible to all walks of life. The monthly free health screening by Bethesda Medical will be conducted on the first Saturday of each month starting 2 September 2023 from 8:30 AM to 10:30 AM for Singapore citizens and permanent residents aged 60 and above. The clinic has GP, X-ray, obstetrics & gynaecology (O&G), dental and counselling services. The space is also home to a relocated old trade of Chinese medical hall, Fung Onn Medical Store, affected by the closing of Tanglin Halt. They are just a stone’s throw away from their previous location at Tanglin Halt so customers and followers will still get to interact with their familiar shop owners and workers. Relocated trades are offered a subsidised rate to set up shop and resume business at Margaret Market, all in the spirit of community. Busy bees may also stay on top of their health with Gymm Boxx, a 24-hour open space gym for working out any time of the day to fit your schedule. Margaret Market aim to create a new identity while preserving a sense of familiarity by revitalising an old landmark for the new generation. Margaret Market is proudly curated and managed by Bethesda Medical, the master tenant and health service provider of the development. Russell pushed a bit too hard though and crashed on the final lap. https://www.skysports.com/f1/news/12433/13017512/f1-2023-awards-best-race-bestmartin-brundle-moments-biggest-surprise-and-shocks-plus-lots-more METRO Best race: Singapore Red Bull’s one marmalade-dropper came in Singapore, where they could get neither car’s tyres up to temperature and Verstappen finished a season-worst fifth. This left the door open for a floodlit battle royal between Carlos Sainz, Norris, George Russell and Lewis Hamilton. The top four were glued together on the last lap. https://metro.co.uk/2023/11/29/max-effect-oscar-winner-highs-lows-2023-f1-season19901850/ ESPN F1 Best Race: Singapore https://m.facebook.com/story.phpstory_fbid=pfbid033e9vGHg8vPTnEw2xExRJqjYmMR8y62vCc7siV8mzjbJFGWc9euKyzcPzNGmytsv1l&id=100064541720227&mibextid=ZbWKwL WTF1 We don’t think we have ever seen so many F1 fans agree on one topic. But the ‘what was the best race of the season?’ question seems to have brought many of us together to all share the same thoughts. Across our social media channels, the clear favourite was the Singapore GP. For many reasons, it was the one race this season that Red Bull was finally taken from the top step of the podium, as Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz executed his win brilliantly with a clever and calm approach. Fans loved how he helped former McLaren teammate Lando Norris stay on the podium while also boosting his chances of a victory. It was some of the closest racing we have seen across the season, with both Mercedes chasing down Sainz and Norris. Don’t forget the last lap drama of George Russell’s turn 10 crash. https://www.wtf1.com/post/the-best-race-of-the-2023-f1-season-heres-what-the-fansthink/ MOTORSPORT MAGAZINE (NOMINEE) The majority of Formula 1 grands prix in 2023 may have ended with the same result, but chaotic moments caused by ever-changing weather fronts or brilliant on-track action meant some events still managed to keep us on the edge of our seats. A rare non-Red Bull victory in Singapore was perhaps a standout moment for many, but as was the series’ return to Las Vegas — racing under the lights of world famous landmarks certainly brought its fair share of drama. Best race nominee: Singapore Grand Prix The only race Red Bull didn’t win came to a nail-biting end as leader Carlos Sainz fended off two snarling Mercedes — by slowing down, which gave second-placed Lando Norris DRS assistance to defend. https://www.motorsportmagazine.com/articles/awards/best-f1-race-of-the-year-2023-season-review-awards/ *** ABOUT THE FORMULA 1 SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX The Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix organised by Singapore GP Pte Ltd is a global motorsport extravaganza with a unique combination of spectacular night racing and world-class live entertainment at the picturesque Marina Bay Street Circuit. Singapore's First Premium & Luxury Salt Spa What a Saltperience! When we first heard about such a concept...we were just wondering what's going on... it piqued my interest.. my knowledge on spa and wellness manifested as I was trying to imagine an entire series of iconography, design, earthly materials and ambience that would pay homage to a truly Salt experience within a modern luxury spa in the heart of Singapore - at Raffles City! As I started to document my journey, from the moment I entered the spa, the questionnaire - sofa area, and as I walked through the corridor, past the reception and past the consult room before entering the changing room, I then saw it, right in front of me, an entire room (which is rest and relaxation area) to take in the salt, from the ceiling to the walls and the floor, entire deposits of salt spread all across my luxury rest-reclining bed... I could feel the fine salt crystals rummaging through my hands.. and then I proceeded into the salt-driven room (the facial room) for my lovely rejuvenating facial, in a totally Salt environment...and my journey begins.. Introduction and History Pablo Blau (the “Spa”) is Singapore’s first luxury spa that offers exclusive treatments in a salt room environment replicated after salt mines and caves in Eastern Europe. The Spa harnesses the therapeutic effects of salt therapy and pampers the body through its treatments to achieve healthier glowing skin and general well-being. Steeped in history, salt therapy is one of the earliest forms of alternative medical treatment. During the medieval period, sick people were taken to the salt caves to convalesce. Thereafter, it was observed that salt miners displayed younger and clearer skin. These salt miners also seemed to be cleared of respiratory issues which were in stark contrast to their coal and metal counterparts People travel far and deep into the ground to harness the benefits of salt therapy. Wieliczka Salt Mine, UNESCO World Heritage Site, sees a visitor ship of 2 million visitors a year. Other popular salt mines in Ukraine and Belarus receive 9,000 visitors a year collectively, which is amazing number given the interest in the salt therapy in recent years. People seeking overall health benefits or relief from respiratory ailments, allergies or skin conditions have turned to salt mines and caves. Those who have benefitted from salt therapy claim its effectiveness in reducing over-reliance on medications and credit salt therapy for clear skin. How salt room therapy works on skin and health? Salt is known for its anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. It has long been used across many cultures to treat mild cuts and inflammation over many generations. Through a process known as osmosis, salt kills some types of bacteria by drawing out water or fluid. These bacteria can otherwise cause inflammation. Without water or fluid, some of these bacteria cannot survive. In a salt room environment, a salt generator mimics the therapeutic effects achieved in natural salt caves. It grinds and produces salt particles in the air. These microscopic salt particles help to clear the respiratory tract and maximise its therapeutic effects. It bolsters the respiratory tract which is the body’s first line defence for the immune system and produces a host of benefits. Breathe better, sleep better, feel and look better with salt room therapy Salt room therapy is definitely an all-round wellness booster. The atmospheric salt content and allergen-free environment are a boon to the skin and general well-being. It helps with blood circulation and reduces inflammation. "When fine salt particles are inhaled, they will fall on the airway linings and draw water into the airway, thinning the mucus and making it easier to raise, thus making people feel better," said Dr. Norman Edelman, Senior Scientific Advisor to the American Lung Association. "Also, these environments are allergen-free and thus good for people with allergies affecting their lungs." The Process After double cleansing my face (no makeup removal for me).. a skin analysis was performed to determine the structure, the pores, the pigments, the wrinkles etc. so I know my skin profile; this was followed by facial steaming and a head massage, super relaxing, an exfoliation using a skin scrubber, extraction together with neat airbrow trimming (that's lovely), skin toning, facial and eye massage (by this time, I was already dead asleep), followed by Ultra infusion, a collagen mask (snoozing at this time) for my face and eyes, and also a rejuvenating shoulder and décolleté (neckline) massage, toning once more, and then skincare application, before a layer of sunscreen.. Effectiveness Ranked The Pablo Blau process prides itself as a hub (the 4 pillars of Anti Aging, Hydrate, Protect and Detox comes into play)...that infuse treatments with a variety of powerful active ingredients, they vary from different ingredient ranges to rectify various skin issues. The Revitalise Youth Power Facial focuses on hydration so that skin is infused with moisture to firm up skin's elasticity to prevent aging, snf subsequent treatments, skin will look young, radiant and supple over time. Benefits There are a series of benefits that are derived from activating both the Collagen Matrix Mask - a Moisturizing, Firming regime followed by the ability for retention of Skin Elasticity, together with Smoothening of the Skin Texture and it also Protects the skin from free-radicals; at the same time, and also the Power Release that will allow for Hydration, Retention of Skin Moisture and Relief of Dehydrated Skin. Amazing Salt Therapy Boosts the Anti-aging Effects in 3 Ways Our skin is the largest organ and most visible part of our body. It is highly complex and displays the effects of time and state of well-being without mercy. Inevitably, because of how noticeable our skin is, it also affects our psycho-emotional health. Simply put, the condition of our skin has a strong impact on how we feel about ourselves. Here’s how they do it at Singapore’s first luxury salt spa, Pablo Blau: 1. Normalise pH Level Our body works in wondrous ways. It can regulate salt and water balance naturally. Perspiration is one of our body’s mechanisms to remove toxins and buffer skin’s pH balance principle, their salt therapy normalises skin’s pH level when atmospheric salt content comes in 2. Promote Repair For the longest time, salt has been used to treat many minor ailments because of its anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. On the skin, salt is effective yet gentle in reducing redness and swelling. Salt also helps to repair skin’s natural defensive properties and strengthens skin’s protective barrier without compromising the skin’s natural microflora and integrity. 3. Boost Regeneration The salt generators in their amazing salt rooms produce ionised fine dry salt. These negative ions are natural antioxidants to fight free radicals and aging. They give their skincare treatments a powerful anti-aging boost. The serums and ampoules applied are better absorbed, and this results in healthier and younger glowing skin in a much faster way. Benefits of Salt Therapy Pablo Blau's Signature Salt Rooms houses a salt generator that grinds and releases salt particles into the air. These microscopic salt particles help clear the respiratory tract and maximise its therapeutic effects. It bolsters the respiratory tract which is the first line of defence for the immune system and produces a host of other benefits. Wellness Cleansing and sanitation of the airways Prevention of common cold and flu Strengthening of the immune system Recovery Reduces allergic reaction to pollens Reduces inflammation Improves respiratory and immune systems Sleep Reduces snoring Improves sleep quality It also helps to relieve skin conditions such as: • Acne • Eczema • Psoriasis • Dermatitis • Rosacea • Itching • Swelling & Imflammation • Dry & Flaky Skin • Rashes • Skin Aging Concept Perspectives Pablo Blau pampers and multiplies therapeutic efficacy to achieve healthier glowing skin and general well-being. As part of the overall perspective governing the mechanics of this Spa, it firmly believes that even though effects of time cannot be altered, achieving state of well-being is possible, and therefore it aims to empower esteemed clients to look and feel beautiful at any age. “In order to achieve the therapeutic effects of salt therapy, we have created an environment closest to that of a salt mine or cave, only more luxurious. Together with our spa treatments, we stimulate and bolster the skin and respiratory tract. We believe that these are our immune system’s first two lines of defence against bacteria, viruses and microbes,” shares Ms Nicole Zheng who is the Centre Manager of Pablo Blau. “By looking after the respiratory tract and skin, we naturally feel and look better.” Pablo Blau enhances and expedites skin treatments with salt therapy exclusive to the premises. This proprietary methodology only requires 45 minutes to witness results as the clean hypoallergenic environment coupled with the anti-inflammatory properties of salt provides added healing effects. Rosette Media Panel Rating - 9/10 Having worked with facial, spas and therapies for the past 25 years of my life, I would rate Pablo Blau at a fantastic rating. • Hopscotch (Capitol)

Our latest culinary adventure takes us to the arcade mall of former- Capitol Theatre where we discover the gem of a lovely gateway to Singapore-style craft cocktails and decadent grilled food, termed Hopscotch. The name is special, unique, non-assuming and befitting of the overall concept, style, cuisine and taste. Hopscotch was founded in 2014 by former Bar Stories bartenders Roger, Louis, Kino and Joel. The bar which previously only served alcoholic beverages was located within the courtyards of Red Dot Traffic building. Since then, Hopscotch has retained its initial concept of bringing you interesting and whimsical local themed craft cocktails. Starting with their first menu, they have since launched a different cocktail menu every year. In 2021, Hopscotch opened another outlet at Capitol Theatre in March 2021, a beautiful open space sheltered by an airconditioned atrium. The 2000+ sqft space features a mezzanine and boasts a seating capacity of 130 people. At Hopscotch, they view meals as more than just sustenance - they view these opportunities as moments for socializing, bonding and have a great time. We brought the entire gang over one fine evening to see what's the fanfare and wonder=works and rizz behind this popular restaurant eatery and cocktail joint. We like the very fact that they lift the overall Singaporean identity through their food, drinks and community spirit, which is also part of the mission and vision. Essentially, they are a restaurant and a craft cocktail bar, but they do curate and prepare great tasting food and drinks that were meticulously delivered with fresh and quality ingredients, skilled techniques and methodologies, and naturally service was well thought-out and provided by their dedicated team with warm, friendly and homely service standards. Hopscotch is a charming place, friendly, heart-warming and cosy, a place where friends and family gather, for food, drinks and chatter, and that's what resonated with us, when we were there, awaiting our bevy of specially-curated cocktails, that came along with ooohs, ahhhs and wows!.... from the Garden Sling, to the Garden Rhapsody, to Last Man Standing, to Heartland Signature, Headway Hopper to Lion City Tiki and Summer Fling, they all carried fancy names, creative names but most importantly, good cocktails, snazzy and generous! We were fascinated with the plethora of fine starter dishes that we sampled : Raw Hyogo Oysters (so tasty), Saffron Lobster Bisque (immaculate and i have always loved hot bisque without being too fishy or too much wild flavor, so this was just nice), Summer Asian Salad (refreshing to the last bit), Truffled Buratta (for the texture, oomph), Wild Mushroom Soup with Truffles (I love mushroom soups, so this was just classique) The Chili Lobster Linguine was exactly what we wanted it - tasty yet flavourful with the right sweetness coming from the lobster.. the Kapitan Omu Risotto was delicious with a homely feel, the Limefish and Lime Ravioli was fantastic and provided the right notes in terms of taste structure, the Truffle Furikake Linguine was another classique, the Wagyu Meatball Marinana, something quite different but packed with the right dash of umami for a Marinana and the Wild Mushroom Risotto, simple but elegant with a good dash of peanuts to end with the bite.. When we moved on to the Main Dishes, the first one was the Barramundi Fish and Chips - it was just right, lovely,..the Black Garlic Rib Eye Steak, was just ice, medium well to medium rare, the way we like it. The Duck Confit, was representative of the dish, scumptious! Porkribs had the right match of sauces and ingredients, flowing with yumminess! The Pangium Beef Bouguinon, truly experimental but tasty in the structure department.. The grilled "Pangan" Pork Belly was nicely toasted and neatly done, flavourful; Satay Pork Cheeks so delicious, and it reminded me of something I ate back in Malacca, one day.. the Seafood Coconut Bouillabaise, overflowing with taste and representative of that from France, nicely done.. and lastly we tried the Wagyu Beef Balls, well done! For desserts, we sampled the Chocolate Brownie, Taropannacotta (this is truly interesting where they juxtapose good sections of Taro in an eclectic mix of panna cotta style so I truly like this and give it a rating of 9/10), also tried the Sticky Date Pudding and Nutella Profiteroles. A nice sweet ending to an already very very full meal. Overall - a brilliant culinary adventure and taste experience, Highly Recommended! Since inventing the first cyclonic bagless vacuum cleaner - DC01- in 1993, Dyson has created problem solving technologies for haircare, air purification, robotics, lighting and hand drying. Dyson Hair Care range overview Engineered for different hair types, the Dyson Supersonic™ hair dryer is powerful and fast. The tool uses a fast but focused airflow, is engineered for balance in the hand, is quieter than others and intelligently controls the temperature to help protect hair from extreme heat damage. Unlike many other traditional hair dryers, the Dyson Supersonic™ hair dryer measure air temperature over 40 times a second to regulate temperature output. This prevents extreme heat damage, to help protect hair’s shine. At the heart of the Dyson Airwrap™ styler comes a radical idea: harness Dyson’s digital motor to create a phenomenon known as the Coanda effect. The Coanda effect occurs when a high-speed jet of air flows across a surface and, due to differences in pressure, the airflow attaches itself to the surface. Taking advantage of this principal Dyson’s team of aerodynamicists created a way to style hair using only air combined with heat. The result, whether choosing to curl, wave, smooth or rough dry hair, creates a natural look with a sleek finish, whilst helping prevent extreme heat damage. The Dyson Corrale™ straightener uses patented Dyson flexing plates that shape to gather hair, delivering enhanced styling with half the damage, whilst also being cord-free. The only hair straightener with flexing plates, the Dyson Corrale™ straightener features pioneering microhinged plate technology, which flex to shape and gather hair, applying even heat and tension to all the hair strands in every pass and keeping them perfectly aligned, reducing the reliance on heat. Suitable for all hair types, this unique styling tool also features Dyson’s Intelligent Heat Control for precise temperatures, together with 4-cell lithium-ion battery technology, to deliver cord-free performance, allowing users to achieve outstanding style anywhere at any time. #EffortlessBeautybyDyson. : #JISOO #DysonBeauty #DysonHair@dyson_sg
