- Vacheron Constantin
Patrimony Heritage Exhibition in Lisbon To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Patrimony collection, the Vacheron Constantin boutique located at Av. Da Liberdade in Lisbon, receives the Patrimony heritage Exhibition, from the 24th April until the 6th May. From the 1950s to the present day: the legacy of modernity The Patrimony collection is one that has been passed down from generation to generation, unaffected by fashions and trends. Timeless by nature, it is naturally attuned to each successive age because it has succeeded in capturing the undeniable spirit of modernity pervading the 1950s. This was an era marked by creative effervescence, renewal and optimism, a decade in which fashion underwent a major revolution, when design ingeniously played on curves and straight lines, while architecture expressed itself mainly through pure shapes. Vacheron Constantin accompanied the energy of this period with creations distinguished by their understated roundness and striking slenderness. Twenty years of elegance Understatement is a demanding stylistic exercise that Vacheron Constantin has mastered to perfection. Since the very first model unveiled in 2004 – a manual-winding Patrimony faithful in every respect to the inspirational 1957 reference – the collection has welcomed numerous watchmaking complications without ever abandoning its identity codes. Perpetual calendar, retrograde displays, minute repeater, ultra-thin calibre and major horological complications have marked the last 20 years without ever detracting from the Patrimony's formal sobriety. A selection of timepieces to trace back the roots of the Patrimony collection This selection of timepieces traces back the roots of the Patrimony collection- epitome of stylistic pureness, and understates lines of this collection, a singular expression of the harmony between mechanical excellence, aesthetic discretion and the “simplicity” concept which characterized perfectly Vacheron Constantin. “Disco Volante” Pocket watch – 1965 (Ref. 6345) This pocket watch is perfectly in keeping with the «Sixties» era where style sometimes took extravagant liberties. This ultra-thin pink gold model is the pocket version of a watch nicknamed «Disco-Volante» by Italian collectors. It is characterised by its bevelled caseband also known as «knife-edge» and designed to accentuate the extreme slenderness of the timepiece intended by the use of Calibre 1003. This reference is fitted with the legendary hand-wound 9’’’ Calibre 1003. In 1955, to commemorate the bicentenary of its founding, Vacheron Constantin stepped up its promotion of ultra-thin models by presenting three timepieces equipped with the first version of the world’s thinnest mechanical movement, Calibre 1003. This 120-part movement is barely larger than a coin at just 1.64 mm thick and remains one of the world’s thinnest calibres to date. The full measure of the Maison’s expertise is also expressed in the watch’s finishes, between the brushed polish of the case, the stone-polished finish of the bezel and the subtle light effects playing across the silvered sunray dial. Bracelet wristwatch – 1958 (ref. 6264) Conceived in the 1950s, when elegance returned to the forefront, this ultra-thin conventional round watch embodied Vacheron Constantin’s classical styling, while offering outstanding reliability. The absence of extraneous decoration and the controlled design are all that is required, provided that every detail serves to accentuate the clean lines and the beauty of a timeless design. This 1958 yellow gold watch, known as Reference 6264 and part of the Maison’s private collection, served as the inspiration for the “Patrimony” collection with its deliberately minimalist approach. The collection is entirely composed of round watches that focus resolutely on essentials, in a refined style that represents its strength and charm. This timepiece embodied by a silver-toned dial punctuated only by radiant indexes. The case, which opts for a broad dial aperture, is fitted with very short lugs so as not to disrupt the finely balanced shapes and the elegance of a semi-thin model typical of this era. In the interest of fitting the narrow shape of the case, this timepiece features a movement of remarkable finesse; the manual winding movement calibre 1002, with central seconds. Bracelet wristwatch – 1976 (ref. 34001) Reference 34001 offers a design that is perfectly in line with the artistic trends of 1970s watchmaking: aesthetic minimalism, one touch colour dial, horns and a slender case. The absence of extraneous decoration and the controlled design are all that is required, provided that every detail serves to accentuate the clean lines and the beauty of a timeless design. This ultra-thin conventional round watch embodied Vacheron Constantin’s classical styling, while offering a great reliability. This watch is equipped by the Caliber 1014, an extra-thin manual-winding movement. Its finishes demonstrate Vacheron Constantin's uncompromising approach to mechanical watchmaking, with aesthetic sophistication as one of its greatest assets. - Frida Kahlo
ArtScience Museum presents two exhibitions focused on iconic Mexican artist Frida Kahlo Part of the season Frida Forever, the shows chronicle the artist’s incredible life and legacy Introduction - Profile Frida Kahlo was born on July 6, 1907, in Mexico City. Her artwork, rich with elements of surrealism, symbolism, and nature, intimately explores themes of identity, postcolonialism, gender, and class in Mexican society. Kahlo’s paintings are often intensely personal, with her vivid self-portraits depicting both physical and emotional pain while asserting her personal resilience. Before her death on 13 July 1954, aged just 47, Kahlo created around 200 paintings and artworks of which 55 are self-portraits. Through these works, she communicated not only her anguish and passion but also her revolutionary ideas, her love of nature and her deep engagement with Mexican culture. Despite her passing 70 years ago, Frida Kahlo’s story continues to inspire people from around the world. Her distinctive style has made her a fashion icon who has influenced great fashion houses, with Dior recently paying tribute to her with its 2024 Cruise Collection. Kahlo's ability to incorporate her personal trauma into her art has made her an icon of courage and creativity in the face of adversity. The exhibitions and programmes in Frida Forever pay tribute to her enduring legacy and invite visitors to explore different aspects of her story and her impact across the realms of art, fashion, popular culture, and feminism. The Show Two fascinating exhibitions celebrating the vibrant and extraordinary Mexican artist and cultural icon Frida Kahlo are set to open at ArtScience Museum as part of a season titled Frida Forever, from 4 May to 1 September. Known as one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, Frida Kahlo defied social norms throughout her life, exploring themes of identity, gender, and politics with raw honesty and intensity. The Frida Forever season continues ArtScience Museum's ‘Year of Extraordinary Women’ – a year-long celebration of the stories of women who have challenged narratives, defied expectations, and transcended conventions. The exhibitions and programmes in Frida Forever take a distinctive approach by focusing on the biographical story of Frida Kahlo. Through immersive displays, historical artefacts, film screenings, symposia and workshops, the season provides a deeper understanding of Frida Kahlo not just as an artist but as an individual whose life experiences deeply influenced her creative process. The season features the Southeast Asian premiere of Frida Kahlo: The Life of an Icon, developed by Layers of Reality and Frida Kahlo Corporation, alongside the world premiere of Laid Bare: Frida's Inner World, which is curated by ArtScience Museum in collaboration with Frida Kahlo's great-niece Cristina Kahlo Alcalá and renowned curator, Circe Henestrosa. Together, these two exhibitions offer visitors a comprehensive look at Kahlo's remarkable journey beyond the canvas. Despite a life marked by physical suffering which began with polio in her childhood and later a severe accident that caused lifelong complications, Kahlo channeled her experiences into her art. At the heart of Frida Forever, the exhibitions explore the interplay between Kahlo's medical challenges, her exuberant embrace of Mexican culture, her revolutionary zeal, and the passions that defined her life. The season also includes a virtual reality (VR) experience that offers fresh perspectives on Kahlo's artistic imagination, as well as a newly commissioned installation by Mexican artist and curator, Lidia Riveros, that celebrates Kahlo’s cultural heritage and the motifs in her art. “As part of our ‘Year of Extraordinary Women’, ArtScience Museum is thrilled to launch Frida Forever, a new season about the life of the iconic artist Frida Kahlo. Frida is one of the most well-known artists of the modern era, but beyond her exceptional body of work, the trials and tribulations of her life projected her into the position of a cultural and feminist icon. Within this season, we are taking an unusual approach to exploring Frida’s story, focusing on the intersection of art and medicine. Frida was able to draw on vast reservoirs of strength and resilience to transform her medical conditions into artworks of verve and vigour, and passion and poetry. Her art emerged not in spite of her physical challenges, but because of them. Her portrayal of her own body, laid bare and damaged, transcends personal suffering and speaks to the ability of art to serve as a vehicle for healing and self-discovery. Frida's story draws attention to the often invisible experiences of those living with disabilities and is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit,” said Honor Harger, Vice-President of ArtScience Museum at Marina Bay Sands. “Frida Forever is for anyone who feels different, for those who embrace themselves in any circumstances, and maintain a love of life in spite of adversity. With this season, we hope to foster tender moments of connectedness and find that little bit of Frida that exists in each one of us,” she added. “I am so excited to see Frida Kahlo’s legacy come to life in this wonderful Frida Forever season at ArtScience Museum in Singapore. I have no doubt that the exhibitions will bring audiences closer to the life of an extraordinary woman and incredible artist. It has been a great have been delighted to work with the curatorial teams involved,” said Circe Henestrosa, curatorial advisor for Laid Bare: Frida’s Inner World. Frida Kahlo: The Life of an Icon Making its Southeast Asian premiere at ArtScience Museum, Frida Kahlo: The Life of an Icon is an immersive biographical exhibition that charts the life and work of the artist, journeying through her most pivotal moments from childhood to her physical and emotional struggles, to the life- changing accident that shaped her into an artist with a powerful and unyielding spirit of resilience. Produced by Layers of Reality and Frida Kahlo Corporation, the exhibition encompasses eight thematic spaces featuring photographs, films, multi-layered technology, interactive installations, 360-degree projections and interactive spaces that bring Kahlo’s story to life. It gives visitors a deeper understanding of Kahlo’s creativity and how she lost so much, yet still managed to love and live. At the start of the exhibition is The Altar, a tribute to Kahlo adorned with water, candles, flowers, and items representing her life. It embodies Dia de los Muertos – or the Day of the Dead – a Mexican festival where the living celebrate their brief reunion with the souls of deceased loved ones. The exhibition continues with stories of Kahlo’s childhood, including her plans to enter the medical profession which were derailed by a catastrophic accident when she was 18 years old. On 17 September 1925, Kahlo was riding a bus when it crashed into a trolley car. She was badly wounded, sustaining a broken spine, collar bone, ribs, pelvis, 11 fractures in her leg, and a punctured midsection. From that point on, Kahlo endured long periods of recovery in her bed, and had to had to wear medical corsets for the rest of her life. The exhibition memorialises the accident through a haunting installation called The Instant that freezes that tragic moment in time, revealing Kahlo’s physical and emotional fragility. The Instant uses multi-layer technology and a new approach to holographic video by overlapping layers of projection to give them a three-dimensional effect. While the near-fatal accident broke Kahlo’s body, it also became the catalyst for her love of painting. As she recovered from her injuries, she began painting and used art as a way of coping with pain and anguish. Her long convalescence is explored in an installation called The Dream by visual artist Jordi Massó and IDEAL. It transports visitors to Kahlo’s bed – the place where she painted a significant number of her works after her accident – and depicts the continuous cycle of life. Additionally, the exhibition examines Kahlo’s three great passions: painting, political activism, and love. It details her many relationships, including the love of her life, Diego Rivera, whom she married in 1929. While Kahlo’s accident meant that she could not bear children, she directed her love for children into her nieces and nephews, and channeled her affection into taking care of her garden and many animal companions. This story is told in a new themed space developed by ArtScience Museum called The Garden of Love that pays homage to Kahlo’s beloved garden at her home, the Blue House in Mexico. Here, visitors can experience a Mexican-inspired garden filled with images of Kahlo with her plants and animals. Visitors can play a role in tending the garden, decorating it with flowers and contributing their own wishes of love. The artistic motifs that frequently appear in Kahlo’s art are explored in the interactive installation, Endless Symbology. It invites visitors to interact with symbols from Kahlo’s paintings including flowers, fruit, a hummingbird, and a monkey, which visually represent themes in her life such as her Mexican culture, her marriage, fertility, pain, and death. At the centre of the exhibition is La Rosita, an interactive space that embodies Kahlo’s vibrant and exuberant nature. It refers to the tavern, Pulquería La Rosita in Mexico, where Kahlo and her students created murals while she was an art teacher. Within this tavern, visitors of all ages are invited to become artists themselves, personalising their own portraits of Kahlo and projecting them onto the walls of the space. One of the undeniable highlights of the show is the dramatic technicolour gallery featuring Frida Kahlo’s Immersive Biography. This 30-minute, 360-degree experience traverses the life of Kahlo from her childhood to her final days, offering visitors the opportunity to experience her life story, passions, joy and sadness through photographs, films, animation and poetry. The final part of the exhibition, Fashion Icon, focuses on how Kahlo used fashion and traditional clothing to show pride in her Mexican roots, as well as to conceal her injuries. Kahlo adorned her hair with flowers and wore long skirts to cover up her wounded body, including her shorter right leg – a result of her childhood polio. Her style was so distinctive that she become a fashion icon, appearing on the cover of Vogue in 1937. Her unique approach to fashion is explored in this section through the presentation of six traditional dresses from Mexico developed by women artisans from the state of Oaxaca, who draw upon the Tehuantepec embroidery tradition. These garments are a contemporary counterpoint to the vibrant clothing Kahlo became well known for. Steele is the third consecutive first-time LIV Golf individual winner, following Abraham Ancer in Hong Kong and Dean Burmester in Miami Talor Gooch, now playing for Smash GC, returns to defend the Singapore title he won last year in a playoff against Fireballs GC Captain Sergio Garcia; the 2023 Singapore playoff is the first of three that Garcia has participated in as a LIV Golf player. Defending Singapore team champion RangeGoats GC have two new players this season in Matthew Wolff and Peter Uihlein, who were acquired via offseason trades by captain Bubba Watson. Torque GC Captain Joaquin Niemann, a two-time winner this season, enters Singapore as the points leader in the Individual Championship race. Crushers GC, captained by Bryson DeChambeau, has won two team titles this season and leads the team points standings LIV Golf Singapore is the last tournament before golf’s next major, the PG Championship, in which Smash GC Captain Brooks Koepka will enter as the defending champ RAHM'S TOP-10 STREAK Jon Rahm, captain of the expansion Legion XIII, is the only player this season to finish inside the top 10 in each of the first six tournaments, but the Spanish star remains in search of his first win since joining LIV Golf. He currently ranks second behind Joaquin Niemann in the Individual Championship race. Rahm’s results in 2024: MAYAKOBA – Tied for 3rd, two strokes behind winner Joaquin Niemann LAS VEGAS – Solo 8th, four strokes behind winner Dustin Johnson JEDDAH – Solo 5th, six strokes behind winner Joaquin Niemann HONG KONG –Tied for 8th, three strokes behind winner Abraham Ancer MIAMI – Tied for 4th, three strokes behind winner Dean Burmester ADELAIDE – Tied for 3rd, two strokes behind winner Brendan Steele FINAL DAY RESULTS While Ripper GC rode the momentum of last week’s home victory to a second straight team title Sunday at LIV Golf Singapore, Smash GC Captain Brooks Koepka lit the fuse of a hot streak he hopes will produce a successful title defense at the upcoming PGA Championship. Led by captain Cameron Smith and veteran Marc Leishman, the all-Australian Rippers overcame any concerns of a hangover effect after their emotional victory in Adelaide, shooting a final-round counting score of 10 under at Sentosa Golf Club to win by three strokes over Fireballs GC and Cleeks GC. “I kind of knew all year that we were going to get the ball rolling at some point,” said Smith, whose team finished at 32 under and moved to third in the season-long points standings. “I think internally that we're the best team out here, and we're going to be tough to beat when we all have our best stuff.” Certainly, when Koepka has his best stuff, he’s nearly impossible to beat. On Sunday, he shot a 3-under 68 to finish at 15 under for a two-stroke victory over Smith and Leishman, in the process becoming the first player in LIV Golf history to win four individual tournament titles. He’ll head into the PGA Championship at Valhalla in two weeks feeling confident about his chances to win a sixth career major. “It’s all starting to come around,” said Koepka, who became the first active LIV Golf player to win a major with his victory last year at Oak Hill. “I like the way things are trending.” Koepka started the day with a three-shot lead, but a variety of challengers closed the gap throughout the round. Koepka never gave up the lead, though, and he bounced back from his only bogey – a three-putt at the ninth – with a birdie. A late Leishman birdie moved the Aussie within a shot, but a bogey on his final hole gave Koepka a two-shot lead going into the par-5 18th, and he played conservative to avoid the water on the finishing hole. “I felt the heat, but it was mainly because of how hot it was,” Koepka said. “Just played very consistent, missed it in the right spots. When you're playing with a lead, you do that. You don't have to force anything.” The Rippers started the day one stroke back of Smash but grabbed the lead 11 holes into the round when Smith and Leishman heated up. The captain was six under during a 10-hole stretch en route to a 7-under 64, which tied for the lowest round of the day. Leishman was 5 under during a nine-hole stretch as he shot a 66. Matt Jones had a 70 while Lucas Herbert shot a 74 but steadied the ship after suffering a double bogey on his sixth hole. “It's amazing,” Jones said. “Last week was a very special week for us, but to come out here this week and do it again, it's really special.” The vibe was certainly different than a week ago when the Rippers had 94,000 Aussies hanging on their every shot. But the outcome was the same. “It was certainly a challenge,” Leishman said of fighting the hangover effect. “It might have been a blessing in disguise. Yes, we partied pretty hard for a couple of days, but then we all had Tuesday off. I don't know if many of us left our hotel rooms. “And I think conserving energy this week was pretty important, particularly for the end of the week when everyone is worn out. We were worn out, but I think just taking it so easy early in the week might have helped us just to have that little bit of mental strength that it took to get across the line.” In two weeks, Koepka will try to make it two straight PGA Championship wins. And next month in Houston, the Rippers will try to make it three consecutive LIV Golf team titles. “It's probably a good thing to have a couple of weeks off,” said Smith. “It'll be another hot one in Houston. We all love the heat. I think we've all played that golf course before. We're looking forward to getting there and keeping the momentum rolling.” TEAM COUNTING SCORES Standings and counting scores for Sunday’s final round of the team competition at LIV Golf Singapore. The ensemble also exhibits a shift toward sustainability within the industry, featuring eco-conscious designs, such as solar panel-powered electric motors of the Greenline 40, Magellano 60’s utilisation of Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil (HVO), and Wallywhy 200’s thoughtfully designed glass cockpit, allowing natural light and decreasing the need for electricity. Adding to the excitement, the Festival features a significant number of premiers, including one world premiere and 19 premieres across Asia-Pacific, Southeast Asia and Singapore. This highlights the significance of the Festival for leading yacht brands in the world including a stellar selection of leading yacht brands and models such as Axopar, Azimut, Ferretti, Gulf Craft, Leopard, Princess, Sanlorenzo, and Sunseeker among others. Notably, SYF also welcomes new brands to the Festival including Greenline, Wally, Dufour, Aquitalia, Yanmar, all primed to showcase their latest offerings alongside the innovative technologies and hybrid capabilities prevalent among this year’s participants. Key highlights include: ● Azimut’s Magellano 60 AZIMUT WINS THE 2024 EUROPEAN POWERBOAT AWARD The Azimut Magellano 60 was recognized as the winner of the European Powerboat Award for the category of yachts up to 20 meters during boot Düsseldorf 2024 At Flagship Night, the nautical industry event organized by Boot Düsseldorf with the publishing house Delius Klasing on January 20th, the winners of the 2024 European Powerboat Award were announced, spotlighting the best boats tested by the jury during the previous nautical year. Azimut’s Magellano 60 is the winner of the “up to 20 meters” category. Presented for the first time at the 2023 Cannes Yachting Festival, the already award-winning Magellano 60 also amazed the jury of the European Powerboat Award, which is made up of authoritative international experts from the main European nautical publications. They explained their decision to award Azimut, stating that “the Magellano 60 impresses in the motor yacht class up to 20 meters. In addition to its successful visual appearance, the Magellano 60 is characterized by her newly developed hull, which ensures perfect handling at both slow and fast speeds. The workmanship and safety standards are also of the highest level”. The Magellano 60, in fact, guarantees high performance with the efficient Dual Mode semi-planing hull, which cruises in total comfort at low speeds and can reach higher speeds, all the while mitigating the impact of waves and optimizing the yacht’s consumption and emissions. At just 60 feet, she is a true crossover of the sea, complete with all the comforts appreciated on long voyages. The elegant external lines traced by Ken Freivokh combine with the large spaces on board; the most characteristic part of the Magellano 60 is the stern, which is transformed into an Infinity Terrace with a transparent parapet that offers visual continuity with the sea. Additionally, the natural extension of the Main Deck to meet the cockpit helps to harmonize the experience of the yacht with nature. Today, the Magellano 60 is also synonymous with reduced emissions, because she is the first boat in the Azimut fleet to run on HVO, the biofuel produced by Eni Live (Eni Sustainable Mobility) with 100% renewable raw materials*. According to the results of the tests carried out by the Shipyard, this biofuel, combined with the Dual Mode hull, supports high levels of performance and a reduction in well-to-wake CO2 emissions of more than 80% compared to a yacht of comparable size poweredby fossil fuels. ● M/Y SILENT WORLD is available for charter in Asia For the first time in more than five years, the esteemed M/Y SILENT WORLD is now open for charter in Asia, providing a unique opportunity for individuals or groups seeking a luxury yachting experience in the region. - Brahms Requiem & Schumann Cello Concerto - Solace For Humanity
A beautiful rendition of this classique piece was performed on Sat, 20 Apr 2024 at the Esplanade Concert Hall by the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, Singapore Symphony Youth Choir Singapore along with Hans Graf as Music Director, Eudenice Palaruan as Choral Director, Wong Lai Foon as Choirmaster with special performance by Qin Li-Wei on cello, as well as Susanna Andersson on soprano and Bo Skovhus on baritone. Marvellous performance rating at 8.6/10 Looking back at the origins of this piece.... ROBERT SCHUMANN (1810-1856) Cello Concerto in A minor, Op. 129 (1850) I Nicht zu schnell Langsam Sehr lebhaft Robert Schumann himself was the personification of the Romantic artist-hero. He poured his soul into his music, even in the face of mental illness, career-altering injury and harsh criticism. Given his tumultuous inner life, it was understandable that when Schumann was recommended for the position of municipal music director in Düsseldorf in 1850, he seized the opportunity, recognising the stability and financial security it offered. Buoyed by the initial wave of confidence and optimism brought about by his new role in Düsseldorf, Schumann composed his Cello Concerto in just two weeks in October 1850. It was perhaps intended for Christian Reimers, the principal cellist of the Düsseldorf Symphony Orchestra, with whom Schumann rehearsed and revised the concerto. Tragically, Schumann's mental health continued to deteriorate. Six days after the concerto was sent off for publication in February 1854, Schumann attempted suicide by throwing himself into the Rhine. He remained in an asylum until his death in 1856. Schumann once declared to his wife, the pianist Clara Wieck, "I cannot compose a concerto for virtuosos, but must light on something different." The cello concerto eschews gratuitous displays of dexterity but presents the soloist as the protagonist in the unfolding musical drama, a poet- dreamer wearing his heart on his sleeve. The legendary cellist Pablo Casals, who performed the concerto frequently during his career, described it as "sublime music from beginning to end." "sublime music from beginning to end" - Pablo Casals The concerto is in three movements to be played without a pause, like an uninterrupted reverie. This unified narrative is underscored by how the three woodwind chords which begin the first movement are transformed and echoed in the second movement, and in the chords that herald the start of the last movement. The soloist takes the spotlight from the very beginning of the concerto with a glorious melody, full of heartache and yet noble in its suffering. The second subject, in the relative key of C major, reaches ever higher into the stratosphere, as if daring to hope again. Drama continues to unfold in the development section before the rather unexpected return of the opening theme in A minor, brushing aside the triumph of C major. A meltingly beautiful transition passage leads directly into the second movement, where a wistful melody is spun out over a gentle pizzicato accompaniment. A second cellist from within the orchestra joins the soloist in a brief duet, like a fellow kindred spirit offering companionship and solace. The third movement is energetic, brimming with ardour and urgency. There is an unusual accompanied cadenza, where the winds and lower strings affirm and support the soloist, before the music gathers its full force and charges to a blazing conclusion. Instrumentation 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 2 horns, 2 trumpets, timpani, strings World Premiere 9 Jun 1860, Leipzig First performed by SSO 6 Nov 1986 (Valter Despali, cello) Recalling the origins... JOHANNES BRAHMS (1833-1897) Ein deutsches Requiem Op. 45 (1868) 1 Selig sind, die da Leid tragen (Chorus) II Denn alles Fleisch es ist wie Gras (Chorus) III Herr, lehre doch mich (Baritone & Chorus) IV Wie lieblich sind deine Wohnungen (Chorus) V Ihr habt nun Traurigkeit (Soprano & Chorus) Vi Denn wir haben hie keine bleibende Statt (Baritone & Chorus) VII Selig sind die Toten, die in dem Herm sterben (Chorus) While it seems a natural assumption that writers of sacred music should be of a religious bent themselves, a cursory look at modern composers will quickly reveal a different reality: John Rutter, famous for his Magnificat, Requiem, and countless anthems, is an agnostic; Morten Lauridsen, writer of much Latin Catholic music, is a Protestant; Giuseppe Verdi, whose fire-and-brimstone Dies irae from his Requiem is used for action movie trailers, was an agnostic; and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, whose setting of the Our Father is the most commonly sung in Russian Orthodox services, was an avowed atheist despite writing some of his best music for the Imperial Court Chapel Choir. Perhaps living in a cultural milieu shaped by faith, and in which faith-based works form distinct genres of music, was why Johannes Brahms, decided in 1865 to write a Requiem. The immediate catalyst appears to have been the passing of his mother Johanna Henrika Christiane Nissen in February 1865, an event which affected him greatly. The Requiem, or Mass for the Dead, is a distinctly Roman Catholic genre - Brahms himself was nominally Protestant, having been raised in the Lutheran faith and confirmed as a teenager - but what Brahms came up with was only very loosely related to either form of Christianity. Instead of using the standard Catholic texts in Latin for the Requiem mass, using his deep knowledge of the Bible in Luther's German translation, he assembled his own collection of beloved texts with no relation to any Christian funeral service. In correspondence with Carl Martin Reinthaler, director of music at Bremen Cathedral, when the former expressed concern over the lack of any Christian dogma or references in the selected texts, Brahms refused to add any, and said he would have gladly called it "Ein menschenliches Requiem" ("A humanist Requiem"). The name Ein deutsches Requiem ("A German Requiem") first appeared in 1865 correspondence with Clara Schumann, where he wrote that he intended the work to be "eine Art deutsches Requie''' ("a sort of German Requiem"), where the "German" referred to the language of the work. This first version, with six movements (without the current fifth movement), was premiered at Bremen Cathedral on Good Friday, 10 April 1868, and was a great success. A new fifth movement was inserted in May that year, bringing the total number to seven, and this was premiered in Zürich on 12 September that year. The first movement Selig sind, die da Leid tragen ("Blessed are they that bear suffering") begins in a serene F major but despite modulating into D-flat major and some dramatic passages, never loses the sense of buoyant hope, ending as peacefully as it began. Denn alles Fleisch es ist wie Gras ("All flesh is as grass' starts with a solemn funeral march before winds bring respite at So seid nun geduldig ("Be patient, therefore"). This movement incorporates some musical material from 1854, the year of Robert Schumann's mental breakdown and suicide attempt - is Brahms here making a subconscious memorial for his friend and mentor? A baritone solo starts Herr, lehre doch mich ("Lord, make me to know mine end") and dialogues with the chorus which turns the text into a powerful fugue at Der Gerechten Seelen ("The souls of the righteous"), conjuring up images of the ranks of heaven. Wie lieblich sind deine Wohnungen ("How amiable are Your tabernacles") speaks of the joys of heaven and is the shortest movement, frequently performed as a standalone piece. Ihr habt nun Traurigkeit ("And you now therefore have sorrow"), the new movement inserted in May 1868, introduces a soprano solo singing of labour and sorrow, with the chorus responding Ich will euch tröstet ("I will comfort you"). Denn wir haben hie keine bleibende Statt ("For here we have no lasting city") brings us some real drama at Denn es wird die Posaune schallen ("Then the trumpet shall sound"), reminiscent of the thrilling Dies irae settings of other composers, and culminating in a magnificent fugue at Herr, du bist Würdig ("Lord, You are worthy"). The final movement Selig sind die Toten, die in dem Herrn sterben ("Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord") returns us to the serenity of the opening movement. Wind instruments, gentle swelling strings, and soaring lyrical melodies all bring us calmly and comfortingly to a peaceful close. Instrumentation 2 flutes, piccolo, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, contrabassoon, 4 hors, 2 trumpets, 3 trombones, tuba, timpani, harp, strings World Premiere (final seven-movement version) 18 Feb 1869, Leipzig First performed by SSO 13 Jun 1980
